Followed that guide but it didn't work. The DVD won't boot. Those were for a windows 200/xp bootable cd though. Perhaps Vista works differently?

I'm having trouble burning onto a DVD so that it is bootable. The instruction is to 'Load the files into your favorite burning program and set the boot file to \boot\etfsboot.com' How do I use nero to do this?

This comes down to the same old problem of them and us. It's very difficult to get away from that although not every teacher I might add is guilty of this. I originally joined this school as an 'ICT Technician' but I've officially been the 'ICT Systems Manager' now for quite a while. Yet still I am referred to as 'the technician'. The same happened at my last school as well. Some would argue that it's just habit, but where is the respect here? Not that you are 'stuck up' but that you want recognition for your acheivements and your postition within the school. If a deputy head applied for the Headteacher's job and got it, I doubt anyone in the school would continue to refer to him as 'Deputy Head'. The local councils and LEAs are also to blame. Our LEA have standardised the Job descriptions and pay of 'Technicians'. The level you come in at equates not with the role you play (ie Science, Technology ICT, Food, Reprographics etc) but the level of responsibilty you have. So a reprographics technician could be payed more than an ICT technician if they had a more senior level of responsibilty even though the ICT Technician was a more skilled and knowlegable role. All I can say is thank goodness I am in a foundation school which chooses not to follow the standardised revisions by the LEA.

Yes, had it for nearly two years now. I like it only the web log has never worked and the Securus team have never been able to offer a fix for it. I was told version 4 might solve the problem so I will install it over easter and see. I am so pleased that from the new version it will auto update the clients! That will save us a lot of work!

So is version 4.25 still in testing or has it been officially released?

I must admit, I am beginning to worry a little about Truancy Call at the moment. Twice in as many weeks, they have had a server problem which has meant it has stopped working. On the first occasion, we were under an ofsted inspection after being in special measures, one of the main targets being to impriove attendance!!! Oh, and when it stops working, everything stops. You can't access their website either. It's lucky if you get through to technical support by phone. I will be recommending they set up an indipendant service status site so that they can at least post information up there if things go wrong which will relieve the support phone lines a little. But if the server can't cope, they are going to have to act soon.

Shirt and Tie for me. But I could come in Jeans and t-shirt and nobody would blink an eyelid. The school dress code is pretty upto you here - there's no real restrictions, a lot of the staff dress scruffy. There are one or two of the female kind who dress far to skimpy for a school in my opinion - especially with the age group they are working with. I think in general, dress code has become less important not just in schools, but in business too. I mean, with the amount of money we pay to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs (and the like) you'd think they could do better than jeans and t-shirt when they turn up at a key-note address.

Sorry to drag this out, but your link googles 'imac g5 overheating'. This does reveal a problem with the older iMacs. If you search for 'imac intel overheating' having a quick look, it seems there are few recorded problems with the intel chip overheating if any. The G5 imacs and INTEL imacs are completely different.

If you are on a tight budget, then PCs are your only answer. A local partnership payed half the cost for our imacs. Where've you heard this? I have done some extensive video work on all our imacs with finalcut express, and they have never over heated. Of course for serious work, Mac pros are better all round but more costly. iMcas are brilliant for schools IMHO.

What spec is that? The bottom of the market one has far to little ram really @ 512mb 17" 2Ghz. 1GB memory 160GB hard drive1 8x DL SuperDrive ATI Radeon X1600 graphics We have four of these, but the 20" ones, and they speed along. Much faster than the few PCs we have similar spec, but running Adobe Premier.

How much are you spending on these PCs? Add that to the cost of the software you decide on. If PC + Software = comes to £630 ex VAT or more, then buy iMacs instead. Correct tool for correct job. And the video editing software comes free too.

Well, if you're sims support can't sort this one out, then they need sacking! You could always ask for the update on CD

FMS has a seperate set of users from SIMS .net since it is a completely seperate SQL DB. Your sims .net username and password won't work. If you are unsure of which user credentials to use for this, just ask your bursar / finance manager for his/hers. Chances are, they will have full access rights. BTW, if this is the update that was released in february, then you may get a problem where the DB is updated, but not the client software. When I rang up about this, they seemed to know it well so I presume a number of schools have had this problem.

We've just received a hotfix for an XP problem where a 'group policy client side extention IP security failed to execute'. The hotfix contained an exe but also contained a PDB file, the same name as the dll that we need to replace. Now I presume when you run the exe, that replaces the dll file. But how do I use the PDB file? Can this be scripted?

Ok, I got it all transferred over now except Infrastructure manage FSMO which windows nicely told me should be kept seperate from the Global Catalog(ue) controller if you have more than one DC. So I've left that role on the old server. Well, got to give it something to do Anyway, seeing as I have installed 2003 Server R2 on the new server, thought I'd install some of the new features through Add / Remove windows components. I installed the File Server Management bit, but when I run it I get an error message: 'Cannot find resource file C:\Windows\System32\FsmMsg.dll' I looked in the system 32 folder and the file is there! Tried uninstalling it and re-installing it but I just get the same. Can't find anything on this in Microsoft support, or even from googling 'FsmMsg.dll'. Any ideas?

Thanks for that. I do intend to leave the old server as a domain controller but it is getting on now so I don't want it to do too much of the work. Which FSMO roles if any would it be worth leaving on the old server? Also how do I transfer the global catalogue? Can't seem to find anything about this on microsoft support.

No, I can edit GP from the new server, if I point the GP management console to the current server. But I want the new server to CONTROL GP, not just edit it. When I transfer FSMO roles, will this include GP controll as well?
