Unifi Wireless constantly dropping connection
TMBS replied to TMBS's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Hi everyone Thanks for your replies! Dad a manic day yesterday. Can't pinpoint to a specific AP, device or wifi network, so really hard to work out what the issue is. For now I've updated the Controller, Cloud Key and AC firmware so they're all on the latest versions. We don't have the Unifi Gateway. No we're not using DFS channels, Band Steering or Cell Size Tuning We weren't using the AI feature but I've just turned that on (and reading up on what it does) I really need to get some experts in to help us set it up correctly and I presume it would be better on a VLAN? SLT don't want to spend the money though... -
Hi We have 29 Unifi AC Pros around school that have been randomly dropping connection over the past couple of weeks giving the following errors: Missed heartbeat High TCP latency for Client XXX High CPU usage for Access Point XXX Client XXX is having trouble resolving a domain name to an IP address (DNS timeout). Client XXX is having trouble resolving a domain name to an IP address (DNS timeout). Usually a reboot resolves the issue, or they just come back online but over the past couple of days it's gradually getting worse. It's not the same ACs, it just seems to randomly happen across our site. The Chromebooks say they're connected but also gives a network not available and users can't login, or browse the Internet. At the moment we have 8 Chromebooks that can connect and 34 that won't connect, all in the same classroom! We have a flat network, no VLANS, DHCP and DNS on our domain server running Windows Server 2016. Some APs are EOL and we're trying to find a good time to replace... Any ideas of what we can do? Thanks

Show My Homework / Satchel:One - Good/Mediocre/Bad?
TMBS replied to pete's topic in Educational Software
We've been using it for a couple of years now. It was mainly purchased to stop SLT having the arguements with parents over Johnny getting a comment for not doing his homework! They are now informed of all Johnny's homework via the SMHW app - if they sign up! On the whole it has worked really well. I manage and use as a teacher - install was easy, syncs overnight and we've set up single sign on with Google, so pretty seamless. I did query when setting up why they were pulling so much sensitive data from SIMS - SEN, etc. As the initial install document say we could specify. Was told it was for a module we didn't use so asked them not to select that data but they pretty much refused. I referred to our DPO to deal with that. As a teacher it's really easy to use, set homework and mark. Intergrates nicely with Classroom. My only Google gripe is you can't add worksheet from Shared Drives in Google. Google Classroom does a lot more now, so I'm trying to move away from SMHW and move over to setting Classroom up with parents but staff/SLT don't like change! -
Tablets in school. What do you use/recommend?
TMBS replied to TMBS's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
What does everyone use to store their Chromebooks? We can't afford the charging trolleys so looking at cheaper alternatives but there are not many out there. The best so far is a wire dish stacker... -

That sounds interesting! I'd not heard of Kami before, any idea how much per school licence? Have you used any Chromebooks with a stylus? Thanks -
Tablets in school. What do you use/recommend?
TMBS replied to TMBS's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Their only reasoning was that they'd be able to share worksheets easier and cut down on printing! I've asked for a meeting so we can discuss and look at the best device. I hate it when they get dumped in a cupboard! -
Hi Our Maths department want a class set of tablets. We trialed them 6 years ago and they ended up in a cupboard so I'm a bit reluctant but... We currently use Chromebooks which work really well in school. I've suggested more Chromebooks but they're keen on tablets. Has anyone used the touchscreen 2 in 1 Chromebooks and how robust are they? What does everyone else use/recommend? Do they work well in school? How do you manage them? One concern is how the filtering logs would work, we'd need them to 'log in' to authenticate. Any advice as always greatly appreciated

SBB - Chromebook Netsweeper setup
TMBS replied to stevenramsden's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Their solution doesn't allow you to create logs for Chromebook users either. I've had a call open with them since November 2020, regarding a Prevent issue which they still haven't resolved! -
How much did you pay for the Asus Chromebook Flips? These sound ideal!

Speak to C Learning: https://www.c-learning.net/en We had a Chromebook trial with them and it was really useful and won staff over. You get an overview of the Admin Console too. We now have over 200 Chromebooks and I can't fault them!

Hi everyone We currently have Unifi wifi around school but most of our ACs are becoming EOL. Unifi has worked reasonably well over the years but with having to replace so many I wanted to look into alternatives, preferably something with good support too. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Hi I've decided that I need to update my very basic IT Disaster Recovery Plan. Can anyone point me in the direction of a template/guidance that they've come across? How indepth do you go? What info do you add? Thanks

Thanks! Does this allow you to disable spell check? Students only need to access Docs and write their assessment.
-
Hi everyone Slight panic! We have assessments this week and need to set up Chromebooks without spell check enabled and websites blocked. I spoke to Google support last week and they advised me how, I tested it work - brilliant! Came to set all the Chromebooks up on Friday and the URL blocking works but not the disabled spell check. I've spoken to three other Google support people and finally the third one said 'Oh no the disable spell check in the Admin console doesn't work on Google Docs, just Chrome', not sure why you'd want that but... I've tried adding the Safe Doc extension but even with than enabled it underlines words and offers suggestions. I know you can disable it in Google Docs via the Tools menu but our English HOD doesn't want anything the students can enable! The first assessement is tomorrow morning - HELP!! Thanks

I was recommended Andy at A V Partsmaster on here and found him really helpful and a good price for the projector we needed - he responded really quickly too. https://www.avpartsmaster.co.uk/

Hi Our SIMS server rebooted unexpectedly yesterday and then gave a imminent hard drive failure. It's a HP Proliant ML350p GenB that was installed and configured by our support services. I rang them to report and ask for advice, they dialed in and took a look, confirmed what I'd told them. I mentioned that I had an exact server model spare, so I've been advised to unplug one of the hard drives from that and swap for the corrupt one in the SIMS server. The server has 5 drives in it which he 'thinks' are set up via RAID. I don't feel confident in their advice - which is worrying as they manage the server... How can I tell if it's configured via RAID? Can I just swap the disk over? Will it not need configuring? Does the server need to be on or off when I swap over? We were supposed to be having a new server last year but they've not managed to supply that either-COVID! So I don't want to spend a lot of money repairing this one. Thanks

Hi Can anyone recommend a replacement for our Viewsonic PJD7382 projector. It needs to be set up in our Sports Hall for assemblies. I'm not an AV expert so wasn't sure if this is still the best solution? We have it on an arm that swings out and projects onto the wall. The current one has white spots in a cluster at the bottom which Google informs me is the DMD chip. Not sure if they're worth replacing as it must be at least 5 years old? Thanks

No we're a Google school, don't use 365... Thanks

Hi We have a lovely school bulletin that was set up by an ex member of staff which now doesn't work (Error: Field 'sun' doesn't have a default value) and no one knows how to fix! I think it was built using cPanel and Wordpress, I have the log in details but no idea how to use it. Can anyone recommend another solution? I could use Google Sites to set the page up but no idea how to set up a bulletin for staff/students to use. The current one allowed you to post messages to specific year groups that tutors would put on the board in the morning. Incase you didn't realise by the above I'm not a coder so something easy Thanks

Google - Shared Drives - keep getting 'request for access' messages.
TMBS replied to TwistedHelixis's topic in Cloud Services
I had a similar issue with Shared Drives and posting files on Show My Homework. From what I remember it was to do with ther permissions and they needed at least Manager: https://support.google.com/drive/answer/7286514?visit_id=637042405228053249-956633332&p=team_drives&rd=1 You also in the Shared Drive Settings had to tick 'People who aren't share drive members can be added to files'. -
You can download them form the Meet Quality Tool, or audit in Google Admin but if you blocked all of them via the filtering it would block the ones that teachers are using too?
-
What is everyone doing with these now students are returning to school? I've said we don't want them in school! Students to keep for homework.
-
I've done that now thanks!

brilliant!! Though unbelievable! You make ours seem like technology whizz kids!!
