Would a system like Ruckus or Meru support having both a b/g and n wireless networks being active at the same time? So if you have some older laptops which only support b/g and new laptops that support n, can these systems run 2 wireless networks without interference or problems? That way you get the best speeds for both laptops.

You could use the video help files on ICT VIDEO HELP Click on Moodle at the top. Personally I think videos are a much more effective way of teaching these things. I used CAM Studio to make some tutorials on how to add content to our Joomla website, which was quicker and probably more appreciated than printed docs. Just a thought

Thanks mossj. Coming from a Moodle background, I'm really surprised by that. Certainly limits the features of Joomla, but glad to hear they've realised it's an issue and will be available in 1.6.

Hi, I would like to create a student user in Joomla, and give that user access and rights to only a specific section/category/article. Don't want them able to access the whole site. Is this possible in Joomla? If so, how? I'd be surprised if you can't, but can only find 4 types of users, which aren't linked to a specific category/article/menu. Thanks in advance.

I know there's a php based doc-to-pdf script, but haven't had time to integrate it yet. I'm a full time teacher, as well as the network/technical manager for the school, so it keeps me busy... I've tried to release it to the Joomla extensions repos, but it's too complicated. I went through the process, but got a message saying I couldn't used a file hosting site to upload the plugin, but then couldn't see where to upload the file to. Should be much easier IMHO. The good thing is that the teachers just copy a paste files into the shared folder. They have been warned that the files will go straight to the website (somepoint that day, anyway).

Hi, I've done exactly what you are after. On our school Windows system, there is a shared folder where teachers can dump files (e.g. letters). I use a free ftp sync program to sync this local folder to a directory on the FTP server where Joomla is installed. The ftp sync program is run as a scheduled task 4 times a day, making sure it's up-to-date. So assuming the letters are on a directory on the server, I created an article page in Joomla called letters. I then wrote a content plugin which has the tags {dirlist myfolder/letters} and this will recursively display the files/folders listed in myfolder/letters. It displays a simple table with date and size, and is ordered according to date modified, showing newest file at the top. For sub directories, it will put the subfolder name in bold and list the files below it, then leave a blank and go to the next file/folder. Security is handled by the Joomla web server. You can see an example of it in School Letters or Showcase Area In the letters example, the artcile/page simply looks like: {dirlist letters/whole_school} {dirlist letters/lower_school} {dirlist letters/upper_school} etc. Donations appreciated, but you're welcome to it all if it sounds good.

Cool, I downloaded the BGFL version, found the proxy settings file and changed it. Repackaged with FFDeploy. Will run install on an admin account, copy the Application Data Mozilla folder to the mandatory profile, then should be away. Thanks for your help- will update with result.

Have you checked the requirements for the software on the client PCs?

This looks great- I have wanted to deploy Firefox on the network, but didn't take the risk due the issues which you seemed to have nailed down. I'm not from a Birmingham school, but would be very interested in using your FF package if it was easy to change the homepage and proxy settings.

I gave our FOG server a static IP, with Windows server managing DHCP. Just keeps things easy. Also figure this is the best way, as I install the FOG client on each client, and therefore clients know where the server is (although I'm not sure if FOG clients have a backdoor method of getting to the server, other than direct IP).

We are looking to install some server/client software to help with dinner registers. Our network is setup such that we have a 2003 server on the admin side of the network, and a 2000 server on the curriculum side of the network. I can ping a machine on the other network fine. The admin domain is called 'school' and curriculum is 'school-domain' (I didn't set either up!). The server software for Tucasi will be installed on the admin network, and when admin staff login, they login/authenticate to the 2003 server. The client software for Tucasi will be installed on the curriculum network, and when teachers login, they login/authenticate to the 2000 server. The problem is that on the 2003 server, the data for Tucasi has to be stored in C:\SCO. This folder also has to be accessible and writeable to teachers from the curriculum network. When I setup the share for c:\SCO on the 2003 network, how do I allow teachers access when they are actually found on the curriculum network? If you're still reading, I'm impressed. I agree, this would be a good way. However, the deal I'm looking at is for a higher spec, non-branded laptop, with no OS. Paying an extra £70 still means that for the money, it still is an great deal. Need a dual-core processor as opposed to a mobile one, so not wanting to get a budget laptop. Thanks for your efforts:)

sorry, I was more thinking if the battery is older and loses it's charge more quickly, so the taskbar battery indicator isn't always accurate. E.g. In a minutes time, some may drop30 mins life left.

Hi, I'm doing a favour for a friend who works at a private, charitable school. They want to buy 5 laptops, and I have found an excellent deal, but it doesn't come with an OS. I'm happy to install a new OS and build the machine, but... The school are using XP Pro on their network, with no imminent change to Win7 or Vista. Where's the cheapest and best place to buy XP Pro? I came across Microsoft Windows XP Pro SP2 (OEM) which sells it for £70 exVat, which seems good. As they aren't a government funded school, they can't use a county supplier and get cheaper versions, and I'd need to have the XP Pro CD to do the installation. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
