Hi, we are looking to upgrade our existing wireless network, which is currently multiple separate neatgear/hp pro curve APs (unmanaged). We have been given a quote for the following NETGEAR WFS709TP - FULL FEATURED SMART WIRELESS CONTROLLER 15 x NETGEAR WAGL102 - DUAL BAND PROSAFE WIRELESS ACCESS POINT NETGEAR PROSAFE GS724TP-100EUS 24 PORT MANAGED GIGABIT SWITCH INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION OF WIRELESS NETWORK All for £3,500 installed and configured. I had a chat with someone who said that she knew of several schools who had serious issues with this system/setup, so far as to say they are ripping it out and going with something else. Can anyone offer any experiences/thoughts? We are a 250 intake Junior, with a large, spread out building. Thanks.

Hi, anyone know have ideas on this situation? The school wants to improve their childrens knowledge of current songs through utilising their interactive whiteboards. They want to know if they can place backing tracks of songs on their teachers pool in files relating to each term. This would give the teachers the opportunity to reinforce the learning from assemblies. If the school owns the original copy is it ok for them to do this or will they be breaching copyright? Cheers!

My advice is to get rid of anything that says 'ranger', wherever it is. Eemove it from any shortcuts, create new redirects, and do things as freshly as possible. If not, you may find that the legacy of a partially removed ranger is not pleasant!

Yep, pretty much spot on! Although youtube would be nice as well. We have no control over the proxy, although there is talk of that changing (but there has been for a while). Tried cgiproxy, but get "The web page at null might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address." in Google Chrome. Any ideas? This is different to a 'not found' error. It knows the cgi script is there, but won't load it. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your replies. The user I wanted to grant access to wasn't a domain admin. I've added them to the local admin group via the computer management console- software seems to be running as if the user was an admin, so all ok! Thanks for your suggestions:)

I know it's confusing me too Definitely a bypass idea. Basically instead of going to IE and typing in images.google.com (which is blocked), you go to http://www.mysite.com. Then there is a html form that asks you what to search google images for. The php script would take the query, get the contents of "http://images.google.com?q=MyQuery" and display it in the resultant webpage. So at http://www.mysite.com, you get to search google images, because it's actually being done at mysite.com, not directly from a school computer where it would block google images. Make any more sense?!

Hi, does anyone know of a php script that lets you type in a URL, and then fetches the URL from the shared host itself? If I'm correct, when you access a webpage normally through IE, say, it goes through the set proxy and so things like Google images are ruled out. But what if you have a website/php script on a shared host, outside of any academic/county server, that goes and fetches pages for you and displays the result? So instead of going to Google images via IE and it's proxy settings, you get to google images by getting the shared host to fetch the site, then display it in the browser? I guess it's a sort of tunnel? Even if it works, there might be issues on clicking on 'next' in Google images, as that may use the proxy settings as it is direct access. Or is this just ridiculous?

Turns out that IE7 is rubbish. I ended up using a different template which is quite similar. NOt as nice, but beats going through every detail of css / div tags and working it out.

Is it possible to give a power user (with domain account) administrator privileges on a particular machine? I run some backup software on a machine where a teacher regularly logs in. The teacher account is a power user, and the software only runs automatically when logged in as an admin, otherwise it forgets it's settings. Many thanks.

Hi, I'm building a new Joomla site for our school, having moved away from our custom Moodle due to county decisions. The site is http://www.marneljuniors.com. In IE7, the middle section doesn't start until the end of left column, so there is a load of blank space in the middle of the page. Upgraded to IE8, all is fine. Tested in Chrome and FF3.5, all ok. Interestingly, in IE8 with compatability mode on, it gives the same problems as with IE7. The template is the default one shipped with Joomla (latest version), with white colour option. Any thoughts? I've looked around the web for hours, but can't find anything. Have also used Chrome inspetor and Firebug and IEDom inspector, but I'm not a CSS guru, which is what I suspect this is! Any help greatly appreciate- thanks!

Hi we currently have a moodle system, and have the google apps education. We use the Single Sign On in Moodle so that we can easily access both Moodle and Google Apps/email. We are looking to move to Joomla for our school website, and abandon Moodle because it is surplus to requirements (county have gone for StudyWiz). Moodle is a bit much upkeep for just a website, and is expensive for hosting compared to joomla. Does anyone know if joomla has the same Single Sign On (SSO) plugin as Moodle? Basically I need the staff to be able to login via Joomla so they can access their email (and not go via the offical google apps page and have to enter the domain name each time). I'd check out Deal Summary Wifi, GPS, GPRS, free internet, free email, free texts, 200mins, unlimited calls to other 3 users, skype, £20 month. Internet usage is actually limited to 1gb a month, but haven't really come close to going over that, mainly because of the wifi that can be used at home/school. Bad point is that the headphone is 2.5mm, not the standard 3.5mm, but you can get an adaptor for 99p on ebay. Also get an 8gb miniSD card, cheap enough.

All our teachers use 1 account, and so share a My Documents folder. Works well enough. However, the teachers are putting lots of video in this folder, which is eating up space. There are easily hundreds of videos, so a manual job would drive me insane. I would like to have a separate mapped drive which will contain only media. What I need to do is move across the existing videos onto the new directory (mapped drive). I need a script/program which will only copy avi or mpgs, remove it from the orginal source, and create the same directory tree in the new directory. That way staff will be able to find the videos easily. The new directory should basically be a subset of the original, but the directories will only contain video files. Any thoughts? I've looked at this post already. Karen's replicator doesn't seem to be able to remove the files from the source. Robocopy (GUI) doesn't let you only include certain file extensions- it allows you to exclude certain file extensions, the wrong way round for me. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Steve. We've got 2003 unfortunately. The data is simply text in a word document, not likely to be edited soon. It is as you say- emergency info. I'm kind of thinking that if I were to move on at my current school, or got run over, then the IT would be a bit of a mystery for the next person. The other issue is that we have a single teacher account, and all teachers use that account. hence the My Documents is a nice place to save EVERYTHING! However, staff at school are pretty organised, so it's not too bad. Cheers.

Thanks, will give that a go. I'll have to write instructions to the person I want to give the document to so that they are able to actually get and read the file. May write that by hand and send it through the post, although it probably won't get there :0) Perhaps there isn't a perfect security system...

So basically using something like 7-zip would be best then? I've read about the file permission idea, maybe I'll use that as well! Thanks for your help.

I've got a word document with very sensitive data in it. I know I can add a password in word to protect it, but also know that this isn't very fool proof. What's the best way to protect my file from being read, preferably for free? Can use external programs! Obviously the need for a password to open it is required. Thanks in advance.
