  2. thanks cools and jmc. I.ll check out the link and report back. Jmc- i set the static ip in preferences - network- then on eth0 set the ip, subnet and gateway, and rebooted. Can ping the machine from others pcs, and ping other pcs from the machine. does this help? Thanks for your continuing help

  5. I tried 'route add default gw 10.199.231.255 eth0' and got 'SIOCADDRT: Operation not permitted'. Any thoughts? How can I find out what the default gateway is on Win2k? Thanks for your help.

  8. Hi, I am complete newb with *nix. I am aiming to use FOG to help image several machines. I've installed Ubuntu on a 5 year old machine, and it's running fine. I've given it a static IP, and I can ping other computers on the network, and access resources on our Win2k server/XP client school network. However, I can't seem to access the internet at all from the Ubuntu machine. The proxy settings have been set both in Ubuntu (System Wide) and in Firefox. I've also rebooted the machine, and didn't make any difference. Can anyone help me out, or point me in a good direction? I've search on google and can't really find anything that's helpful to me.   10. Awesome, thanks Michael. As usual, you've helped me out again! Yep, the new images are SP3, so your idea will certainly work. The laptops do have new names, but I used sys prep and the names are based on the domain name with random characters afterwards. Can you control the name that is given to laptop using sysprep, or is this a manual step when using mini-setup? Thanks again.
  11. Hi, I'm in the process of rebuilding 48 XP laptops (almost done ). However, I didn't remove the laptops from AD before reimaging them. Thus I have a lot of extra computers listed in my AD 'laptop' group. Is there an easy way to find out which are the new ones that have been added, and so then remove the older, unnecessary ones? Unfortunately I have already moved all the laptops into the 'laptop' AD group. Something like a 'sort by date added' would be nice, but don't think it'll be there... Still on Win2k too... Cheers.
  12. Thanks everyone. I've not tried an additional mp3 player, but will do. However, I found this website Fix Low Volume When Playing DVD Movies Raymond.CC Blog which suggested installing a free ac3filter and near-maxing the gain, which has done the trick (for free!). Thanks again.
  13. Thanks plexer, but I think it just on onboard sound, not a seperate sound card. Would a sound card be louder?
  14. I've noticed that the sound volume on some new desktops is pretty quiet. I've checked that the volume levels on WMP and XP sound controls are on max, and there is definitely sound coming out. However some movies and dvds play a little quieter, and it can be difficult to hear in a classroom. We have powered speakers, but obviously not powerful enough (30w Amplified Powered Speakers). It's an Acer Vertion M464 desktop PC. I also bought a pre-amplifier to see if that would help, but the sound quality isn't great, and I get a hum. (--|40-630A|STEREO PHONO RIAA PRE-AMPLIFIER | CPC). Any thoughts? Anyone use an amplifier, and if so, where can I get one that is relatively cheap that won't need to buy new speakers? Thanks in advance.

  18. Ok, thanks. I'll have a look tomorrow. I gather then reimaging would have no affect. Perhaps I could replace the memory from another working machine, put it in the duff one, and see if it cures the problem. Cheers.

  20. Hi, we have an acer vertion M464 (mistake, I know...). A colleague today was browsing on the internet (searching for JW information for RE -honest!) when the computer had a fatal error and crashed. I'm trying to figure out what to do. Attached are screenshots of what is coming up. There are really strange words coming up- seems like all the characters have been jumbled up. The screen that comes up is the option screen to start windows normally, which then leads to a screen of rows of speech mark characters " and nothing else. I've put in the recovery disk from ACER, which doesn't do a lot (still strange characters/jumbled up). I've also put in Ultimate Boot CD for Windows and Bart PE Disk, both of which end in a blue screen of death. Something to do with ACPI on the motherboard. I get the option to load UBCD, but then blue screen. Problem is I can't seem to do anything due to lack of suitable booting options. I have got an xml syspreped image for the machine, but can't get into UBCD to use ImageXML (or whatever it's called). Is the only way out to take the disk out, put in it a working machine and do a chkdsk and other diagnostics? This may invalidate the warranty though- if it's any good at all anyway. Any thoughts very welcome! Thank you.
  21. First thing I would get working is the smartboard from windows. green flashing lights aren't good. Have you got the latest notebook software and driver software? However, I don't think booting from scratch would be affected by this, as windows hasn't loaded yet. Interesting that FN-GM said he got 99% of them working with a powered usb hub, but obviously not all of them. Try contact him to see if he solved the lost sheep... Don't know if a 660i would behave differently to a 660 though.
  22. Well, what can I say- blown away by the helpful response to my original question. Thanks everyone for taking the time to help me out. I agree that the server needs an upgrade (ie a new server!), and I am proposing that for the new Financial Year. I guess the easiest way to keep it going is to do a clean up on the server, move any video files etc. Perhaps that will give enough space until the new one arrives. I guess I have one question remaining about non-NTFS drives. If I put an non-NTFS drive in a computer (or share it), does the security dialog on a file or folder's properties show the security tab, as would happen if it's an NTFS drive? Or does windows see it's NTFS and make the security tab visible? Thanks again.
  23. Our server is rapidly running out of space. To help out, I am looking to purchase external storage, as our current win2k server has 2 disks (mirrored) and I don't really know how to upgrade these. Currently all our user files and apps are located on the server. If I moved these to a nas box, I would just need to change any redirections/shortcuts to point to the new location. However, won't I lose out, as NAS boxes generally don't support NTFS? I am concerned that if I put the user files on the NAS, then the permissions side of things through NTFS will dissapear, and students will be able to access anything. I know this isn't right, but I can't seem to find anything that explains it cleary. Any advice gratefully recieved. Thank you.
  24. Thanks for your help. I've set the script to copy the shortcuts in the computer startup script section in the students gpo, and they appear ok. However, on a few computers, when I log in as a student, the desktop/startmenu icons don't show up. The icons are on the local machine, but it doesn't seem as though the redirection is working? All I can see on the desktop is My Computer, My Docs and the IE icon. No wallpaper. However the My docs redirection is working, as well as other GPO settings. Just not the desktop/startmenu redirection. On most computers this works fine. I've tried bombprof on the student profiles, and rebooting several times. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
