  1. Hi, have you emailed plasq to get the instructions for exporting/importing reg settings for Comic Life? Gives detailed instructions that were pretty good. If you pm me I can help a bit more. I think I edited the MSI using ORCA to manually set the license registry settings, so didn't need to edit the registry with a .reg file. However, to update the registry on XP logon script, I use: call regedit /S your_reg_file.reg
  2. Thanks everyone, I've finally managed to get time to replace the network cable, and it's all back to normal, showing as root. Cheers
  3. We have 9 Ruckus APs around our school. 1 was playing up, so I turned the power off and on. Now looking at the web admin screen, the status for that AP says "Connected (Mesh AP, 1 hop)". The others all say "Connected (Root AP)". See attached. Which one should I set the APs to? Mesh/Hop or Root? I'm looking for the fastest speed for our network. Thank you!
  4. We use qres to get this done, you can write a batch file to run it. Sets 1024x768 as default, but using widescreen resolution for some of our laptops. I set a variable in the system variables on each laptop, so it can tell what to set the resolution at. Sure there are other ways to do this. Example batch file below: if "%Location%" == "TOSH_LAPTOP_SUITE" goto TOSH if "%COMPAQ_615%" == "YES" goto COMPAQ if "%HP620%" == "YES" goto HP620 rem set default screen res qres.exe /x 1024 /y 768 goto endif :TOSH qres.exe /x 1280 /y 800 goto endif :COMPAQ qres.exe /x 1366 /y 768 goto endif :HP620 qres.exe /x 1366 /y 768 goto endif :endif
  5. That's interesting, I was thinking about Picasa, but hadn't thought about exclusive file access. Will look into it. Thanks for your help David.
  6. Hi, I'm carrying out a little spring cleanning on our file system. We have a single teacher account, which works well, although ends up having a large folder containing lots of folders. We take a lot of photos and videos. I am wondering how others organise photos and videos, so they are accessible and searchable, but also don't take up a ridiculous amount of space. Have thought that a good option is to have a seperate mapped drive for photos and videos, and staff copy their photos onto that drive only. Could then use picasa to be able to search etc. Other ideas welcome!
  7. THanks for your answers. It's only that the number of resources the navigation system shows is loads- too many to create my own navigation, and the resources have funny names too. Perhaps it just won't work Thanks anyway.
  8. Hi, I've got a CD full of resources, with a navigation program to help get to the appropriate file. The navigation is an EXE program, looks like a wrapper for a flash program. On the CD, there is only the EXE and resources, no flash files or swf things. I want to make this all available on our website. Is there a way to allow users to run the executable file on a webpage, which will then make the resources easily navigable and downloadable?
  9. Hi Gerard, I've attached the bits and pieces I've used for this, and will try and write something that it understandable to get this done: 1) Create a shared directory to dump media files into. call \\server\media 2) Copy the 'showit.bat' file into this directory 3) Running it produces playlist.m3u which can be played in windows media player or otherwise. 4) Create a webpage with the code shown in a previous post (a reply to Toby). Can store it in the same directory still, call it display.html 5) In Xibo, create a layout page that is a full screen webpage, and the points to \\server\media\display.html 6) Attached in the zip file are batch files to stop and start xibo client. Needs adapting to call the 'showit.bat' file remotely. 7) I also worked on using a powerpoint in Xibo, which could be updated on a shared location, and then use a batch file to start and stop the xibo client remotely. Meant that staff didn't have to bother with xibo. Trick was to call the powerpoint the same name as xibo gave it (e.g. 26.ppt), and then copy over the powerpoint to the xibo client 'cache' on the display machine, then restart the xibo player. Again, two different options. You could even combine both by including a powerpoint and a webpage in the the layout template with Xibo server. Hope this helps. Been a while since I've done it. The attached zip file will help, although it's not an out of the box solution. xibo_stuff.zip
  10. We have bought several of these to drive our IWBs. They work very well. However, because the laptops are widescreen, and the projectors are 1024x768, it doesn't fully show everything on the IWB. I have created a bat file to change the laptop resolution to 1024x768 when projecting it on the IWB. However, when the laptop is in this resolution, it doesn't look very nice. Is there a way to still have the laptop in 1024x768 on a widescreen, but perhaps it centers the screen and has black on the sides? I think I've seen this before. Thanks in advance.
  11. Hi, we've started using Google Calendar as our main diary, with many staff using google apps accounts to manage the diary. Our head would like staff to have access to the Google Calendar when they are away on courses/meetings etc, to see if they are able to attend next meetings etc. I.E. remote access to GC. What's the best, most cost effective way to get access to google calendar? Web browsers on a mobile don't do justice to GC. Is it simply getting a PAYG mobile that has a google calendar app on it (Android phone?) with bundled data access? Any suggestions of a cost effective plan that won't cost the school too much for it's fairly limited usage? Thanks in advance!
  12. Ok, turns out there is an issue with PCL6 drivers. Downgraded to PCL5c from the website and voila, margins are ok. PCL6 just seems like a waste of time to me, not sure of the benefits! PCL6 drivers may be fine, but PCL5c actually work properly... Thanks anyway for your interest.
  13. Hi, we've just installed a new 2008 R2 server, single server. We have several Ricoh c420dn printers. On the 2008 server, I installed the latest PCL6 drivers for both x86 and x64 computers. When I go to print some a very basic document in Word (just text), it sets a margin of 9.3cm on the left, where nothing can be printed. Print preview shows 9.3cm of white and then the left over of what I am printing. Page setup is A4, If I change the margins to 2cm all round, Word tells me to fix the margins as it's outside the page boundaries, and sets the left to 9.3cm. I've uninstalled and reinstalled MS OFfice, no change. Why?! I can't see it anyway. Have checked printer properties etc, nothing unusual. Please does anyone know how to fix this- I'm stuffed in the morning if teachers can't print... Thank you.
  14. Hi, Did you ever find a solution to this? Thanks.
  15. Your last sentence is a good idea, but as you say, it's a little inconvienient. Have spent the hour logging in individually, so that when users login, it's all setup for them. At least it's a smaller school!
  16. I think you're right- Google Apps isn't actually overly friendly for organisational control. I've just had to login to 30 different accounts to do what I really wanted... It is much more individual than I thought, which is rather surprising.
  17. Thanks FN-GM, but that's not exactly what I was after
  18. We use a google apps at school. I am looking to improve our calendar situation. I'd like to have 1 calendar across the whole (can be shared) that everyone uses. We don't need individual calendars. Especially, I'd like to make this shared calendar the default calendar across all users, so that when they add an event, it goes onto the shared calendar without having to do anything. Currently, a quick add will go into the personal calendar. Do you think this could be done? It seems like a fairly simple request, but no solution found yet. Thanks for your help!
  19. Hi, does anyone know if you can get a Smart Notebook portable version that runs off a USB stick? Don't need the drivers etc, just the software. I may not have admin rights to install the software, so just need to run it off a usb stick. Thanks in advance!
  20. Having started this post, and having had Ricoh printers and copiers for a while, I would say that Ricoh are excellent. No worries recommended them to others, cheaper than separate toners too
  21. Hi, I'm looking at buying 32pcs from Acer Aspire Revo R3610 Desktop PC - Desktops | Ebuyer.com to our XP network. 2 questions: 1) Is it ok to leave them as Win7 HP? Presumably I can map shared drives to our server for our 4 user accounts (Junior School). What about preventing wallpaper changes etc? 2) We are still on an XP Pro network. How much/can I downgrade Win7HP to XP Pro? Thanks in advance!
  22. Cool, thank you. Definitely would need the windows shares and printers, otherwise I'm stuck
  23. Hi, due to budget restrictions, I am looking to get 30 Samsung NB30s. I have 4 main questions: a) Can I put ubuntu or edubuntu on it, and if so, will it have the wireless drivers? b) Will I be able to place shortcuts to a windows share (for pupil folders)? c) Will I be able to add our Ricoh printers to Ubuntu? d) Is there anyway to restrict what the children can and can not do in Ubuntu? Thanks for your help
  24. Ok, I have now worked it all out. I am using Xibo, which is great. I'm able to dump any type of media in a folder, then run a batch file, which updates the playlist and restarts Xibo auotmatically. I also put a powerpoint on Xibo to show a welcome screen and notices, and put the file on a shared folder, so the admin team don't need to use Xibo at all, they simply can edit the powerpoint, then restart Xibo with the click of a button. Like it! If you want to know how the above was acchieved, let me know, and I'll post instructions. Thanks again for everyone's help
  25. Hi Toby, thanks for your help on this. It hit me this morning as I woke up- I could just wrap the playlist.m3u that I made (see attachment on previous post), and then embed that playlist in a webpage. HTML code is: style="position:absolute; left:0;top:0;" CLASSID="CLSID:6BF52A52-394A-11d3-B153-00C04F79FAA6" type="application/x-oleobject"> Obviously some values need to be chaned etc, but seems to work, wven with UNC path. Will stick it into Xibo now and have a play Thanks again.
