We have staff laptops with Windows Vista (yuk) and 7, Each staff member has a local profile, but My Documents etc (not the desktop or app data) is redirected to the server, they have offline files enabled and there user is set to be able to logon to the laptop when away from the domain (basically not restricted to having a network connection available) When they logon/off windows synchronises the files, they have mapped drives to the Shared/Common Area etc, which will work from hom evia VPN and are not synchronised. Staff know they have to backup their desktops as that is not done by the Technical department, and that their my documents are always synchronised to the servers and backed up. Means they only have one username and password to remember and they do not have to copy stuff themselves. Hope this helps,

Is anyone else slightly annoyed that the ribbon titles (the old menu titles) are shouting at us (as in they are ALL CAPS), personally I am not downloading it, as I can't seem to get the stuff through our EES agreement, but I may take a look when it is bumped through the VLSC.

let me have a look at our one tomorrow, we get our OSX server to deploy them from our SMB share, but as I said, they have to type in their username and password first time for it to work with our printing solution

Could of been setup that way, or setup as a printer on the OSX server and shared from there. There are many ways of doing it, but if you have any sort os monitoring in place, you really do need the AD integration there, which means it will ask for the password everytime a new password or user uses it.

we have a "Pull Print"/"Follow Me" printing solution which asks for credentials, If my memory serves me correctly, you just click on the printer icon on the mac, replace the name with the AD username (have to do that) and type in the password and make it save it to the keychain. Can give screenshot documentation tomorrow if needed. :-)

We did have our SQL server set to full, but it was using up 200gb of HDD space with the LDF, so we had switched to simple. We have a very comprehensive backup solution already, Full backups each night to tapes in the tapeloader and a batch file runs each night which backs up SIMS and FMS with the SIMS backup tools (cant remember its name off to top of my head but can check on monday) and then 2 hours later a batch file runs on a laptop (kept secure and encrypted with Truecrypt) which restores the database onto its own SIMS "server type" installation, so whenever the fire alarms sounds, the laptop is taken out, so if the worse case scenario every happens we can access information (up to a day old) that we can use on an emergency site (another local school) to get in contact with Parents and Staff and inform them of what is happening.

We do not use x64 at the mo, as we have some older software which just wont work (I am working on it) and there is current domain image being created for them

I recently ordered 120 of the Dell Latitude 2120 (Dell Latitude 2120 Netbook) and got them down to a very competitive price (PM if you want further information on this), but we did get them with 3 years accidental damage, as if they are going to be as heavily used as ours they need them. They are the most solid Netbook I have ever held, and the dual Core (appears as 4 in windows due to HT tech) seems to do a good job, the rubberised case seems really sturdy and the power socket seems to be really well made, but the best feature (by far) is the keyboard, at first look it is a standard laptop keyboard with the modern plastic cover between the keys, but on closer inspection, they have small bits of plastic off the keys, which meant even me attacking it with a screwdriver for a good 10 minutes, I could not get the keys off, it was such a delight to see. Hello all, I have been going around in cirlces a bit here, our staff make some very good video tutorials here, but they save them all in raw AVI format (averaging on 1gb in size) as you can imagine this is a big use on space and resources, especially when a group of students try to play them for indivudual learning. I have come up with the idea (just by myself at the moment) to use our old Wordpress server (very low usage, and running ubuntu) to host a Video Streeming service (internally) in the style of YouTube, thus converting the files into nice small FLVs and paying them nicely for the students. I have tried to install VIMP but it just refuses to encode them properly etc etc and was a pig to even get to work nicely within the webserver. I was wondering, does anyone else have any suggestions on what I could use to set this up? Any suggestions are welcome (I am already expecting the get staff to convert the files to something smaller)

Update, It worked, but only for a pie chart with a count of the text values, no percentages. but yay it worked. Thank you @SYNACK

Hello All, hoping to pick your collective brains here, I have never learned how to use Microsoft Access properly (my secondary school could only afford Lotus Approach when i did my GCSEs in 2001) and I have downloaded the Microsoft Desktop Call Tracker for our Reception staff to use. I have pretty much adapted this for our own personal needs, but there is one thing we would like, and I just can't seem to figure out how to do it. I have setup a query table that shows all calls between a specified date, but what we would like is for it to Produce a pie Chart from the "Status" column/field. At the moment I can copy and paste it into excel where it does some nice CountIF's and creates the chart, but all I would like it to do is count the Amount of Active, Closed and Overdue calls in that period and make the Pie chart in Access. Could anyone shed some light on how to do this (step by step please) so that I can get this one snigly little bit working. Thank you very much Garry
