If possible virtualise everything - these days with how easy it is to do this, with the exception of special use-cases like specialist hardware it's just easier. Although saying that the risk with EVERYTHING being on one host is a fault that takes down that host, takes down everything unles you've got failover or can move the guests over to another VM like with vMotion. Having 2x lower-specced servers is actually better than having 1x beefed-up server IMHO anyway, YMMV. It might be worth looking for help from an MSP for this if resources are limited.

Whatever you go for.... - RAID 1 for OS - RAID 5/10 for Data - Are you using any virtualisation at all? - Using AD? - How many DCs do you have? - How many IT support people? - Dual/redundant PSUs - Any UPS systems? - If internet is slow I guess cloud systems are out of the question? - What are you using for email?

It's been talked about but no school yet I've dealt with has implemented such a program - it's too much aggravation. However e.g. for the cost of a 64GB memory stick per staff member, we can't duplicate that storage space on our servers at that price point, have redundancy and backup of it. We simply can't afford it. We do use hardware encrypted USB sticks however where needed, everything else is in the cloud with OneDrive or on file servers etc.

Our new computers are all Windows 10 CC4 with UEFI BIOS. Old ones will be upgraded first, before installing Windows 10 but will only be with Legacy BIOS but Windows 10 CC4 too. No major issues at current, except issues with WoL and the older kit.

Yeah I'm intrigued by this as well. Anyone found a fix? As well as seeing if the welcome tab can be disabled. For a free app it shows a 'Welcome tab' that firstly prompts them to login or create an account with Autograph.

Interesting ... We've had very similar ones and they've still managed to break them. I don't think there's a vandal-proof mouse. I've had kids do everything including pull the rubber off the scroll wheel.

Does a clock in an exam really need to be run off a projector? What happens if the power fails mid-exam? Doesn't matter at all on an battery powered clock. Internet connection drops for exams info?

Nope we're on 2016 and will be until the next time we have to replace the server, as it was only replaced last year. I understand where you're coming from, but why make life harder for yourself? If 2019 isn't supported yet, that's the first thing they'll say?

What are your Windows 10 builds? Is the Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC the common factor? Otherwise it's another nail in the coffin for LTSC it seems when M$ themselves don't seem to want us education folk to use it. Well... with just a photo to a staff member the once, I proved to someone that I could find out about who this person was, where they worked, their facebook profile and info and their job and age etc. They were shocked.

Echo a lot of the problems here... No updated content... I know one place the "celebratory" photos were the same ones on there when I started 5x years ago and never changed. No-one bothers to look at the screens... students aren't allowed out of lessons, you stand there looking at the screens yourself and people wonder why "you're not doing any work". No one wants to do the actual work to update the content... As it's extra work with no "glory" to make them look good - despite instructions being written for them. All of these issues and more means that IT end up doing the content, when they're simply not the best people to be doing that. Which sort of defeats the whole purpose of the system in the first place. The Google slides thing we'd started looking at ourselves to push it back to the people who should be doing the content.

Yep "outside of scope" means nothing when there's no project management etc and it's all being done by you in addition to your normal day job. That and when they move the goalposts.

Simple answer for us - is we don't. Due to all these various issues. If staff log them on and let them use their account, that's on them. I can't control, only advise. YMMV.

If you to to the public library you get charged for printing and copying. Same as if you go to a copy shop. Are they currently allowed to print for free? How does the printing get charged otherwise?

Be interested to see how this works and any issues, as we're in the same boat with needing a proper MDM.

I think that pretty much sums it up. I've found myself (YMMV) some techs have no idea on customer service, but great tech skills. Some the other way around. Each to their own. To do the job, we need a balance of every skill.
