  1. Poor management and bad decisions using public money. Same as govt...schools HAVE no money. They have TAXPAYERS money. And should be diligent in spending every penny of that cash.
  2. +1 for these. Brought one in last few jobs after a recommendation from a colleague. Amazing. Knocks the compressed air cans out of the park. Plastic on nozzles cracked but it did get an awful lot of use and only about £25/30 at the time. Just make sure you take the appropriate H&S precautions as they're quite noisy.
  3. AV745 (TechDisplay) https://www.techdisplay.co.uk/ Had nothing but exceptional service from them all these years and nothing is too much trouble. Highly recommended.
  4. Sounds like a job to be contracted out to me. IF they want it fixed that bad. We've got asked what we could do about the 3/4/5G mobile signal inside a building ... Er.... NOTHING .... as it's outside or our control, not controlled by us and we're IT, not builders. It was never mentioned again. You can also get into a LOT of trouble for "interfering" with anything to do with the mobile phone network via Ofcom etc. You'll be blamed, not the ones who wanted it. Just my 2 cents
  5. But you know who's going to end up having to keep putting that up and down!!
  6. Very important to remember this, we're all guilty at times. All valid points and had similar myself. We did ours during school holidays, as out-of-hours wasn't paid or reimbursed in any way and wasn't appreciated anyway. We had great support from the SIMS support company at the time when we had issues. We could schedule patches to be done automatically etc. Less latency being onsite, we had RDP gateway access to SIMS if it was needed Don't miss it however one bit. Seeing how Bromcom/Arbour etc the interfaces in SIMS now seems dated, desite the various issues with ALL cloud services.
  7. Wasn't brilliant. But NEVER recall it being this bad from CAPITA/ESS. Even with patch after patch. Me neither, only when it was a 3rd party issue with the provider / CAPITA / ESS themselves. This is 'the cloud' after all though - we were promised near 100% uptime with few issues as as other 'cloud' systems.
  8. I'd say this bit https://www.gov.uk/guidance/meeting-digital-and-technology-standards-in-schools-and-colleges/laptops-desktops-and-tablets That's what I thought... 8th Gen CPU's were the MINIMUM CPU spec along with TPM 2.0 I always tried but get told off for doing that. 5x years is a fair goal I think. Schools have no money for front-line services and kit it seems https://www.tes.com/magazine/news/general/7-key-findings-annual-academy-trust-accounts-report.
  9. For my 2 cents... Spent far too much time and effort over the years in education trying to save them a buck in numerous, multiple, different ways, only for it to come back and bite me in the ass......all whilst I see the money being wasted everywhere else. So along with the backing from DFe IT guidelines we now have, do it properly. If they don't, it's an SLT/management issue not yours.
  10. Exactly that. You're be breaking the T&C's of YouTube/Google otherwise and they (the school) won't support you if anything happens. Nothing has changed in the past decade it seems them with this. Something someone in govt should be able to sort out with the tech providers.
  11. If this is true, plus the fact the hardware is 9x years old the kit no longer meets the DfE guidelines so needs replacing. Bounce it up the chain to SLT, it's their problem. Especially if they won't provide you budget to replace them.
  12. Simply put .... NO IT aren't in charge of hiring and firing people. HR are supposedly doing their job here? That's their job, not yours.
  13. Many months later still NOTHING but issues since replacement of older working setup of PC with DP/HDMI with laptops/docks with USB-C. Constant display issues, disconnections, weird sound issues. Didn't have any say on the change except to say my predictions of unreliability with it I'd raised and were brushed off, unfortunately came to pass as truth.
  14. Fair enough but depends on where you want to draw the line of responsibilities. I don't see this as something within IT's remit e.g. Do the electricians do IT? IT is busy enough these days with enough work but appreciate YMMV.
  15. For my 2 cents I would consider this further devaluing of the IT jobs and you're only going to p*ss off the IT staff on this.
  16. Similar to Assume and exactly the same as you with count to name just two and many other words I can't remember right now. I think crap I've typed it wrong and just get on with the day. It clearly wasn't anything but a typo ad not sure any well-run IT dept really has that much free time to worry about stuff like this when it's a typo. It you typed it a few hundred times in a day/week, maybe it'd raise an eyebrow. Otherwise it's the DSL's job.
  17. Don't be too hard on yourself. e.g. Do they change the batteries in the calculators during the holidays?
  18. For my 2 cents PAT-Testing comes under Electrical stuff, under the Electrical Safety at Work Act 1989. Which is Electrical Safety in the workplace. Workplace is managed by site team. Therefore a site team issue. I personally get sick of their work getting palmed off onto IT teams on lower pay and less staffing.
  19. We've found the 'promises' from the vendors of the built-in functionality of the TV's don't match up in the end. e.g. outdated apps, slow sluggish OPC / slot computer units, outdated Android units you can't update past a really old version. +1 for a PC/laptop connected to it. HARDLY ever had issues with a desktop attached to the TV as a big screen. We can update the PC for approx £500, the TV's gonna be a heck of a lot more expensive to replace. They can use whatever tools they deem fit then. Go for a bigger screen if you can rather than fancy features. e.g. if the display is touch they can use Microsoft Whiteboard app, not sure about Google's equivalent app
  20. Any pictures of the remotes at all - even if a broken one? Otherwise time to play the Meeting digital and technology standards in schools and colleges From: Department for Education card that you're now running unsupported technology and time for them to pony up some cash for replacement TV's and make it an SLT problem.
  21. SLT get RESPONSIBILITY payments for it, IT don't.
  22. Refer them to this https://www.gov.uk/guidance/meeting-digital-and-technology-standards-in-schools-and-colleges and the section Devices should meet or exceed the minimum requirements That makes it and SLT problem and they're paid to lead and manage it - to comply with DFE requirements, not suggestions Minimum requirements The purpose of the requirements in this section is to make sure schools and colleges have reliable and durable devices which support curriculum delivery. This is not a fully inclusive list for all device requirements, as these will depend on specific needs. IT support should make sure all devices meet or exceed the minimum requirements set out in this table. Minimum requirements What you need Operating system Enterprise or education-grade operating systems, which means they are designed for professional rather than home use. Support and security When repurposing, upgrading or buying new devices tablets should have 3 years of manufacturer support and security patches. Laptops and desktops should have 5 years of support and security patches. Warranty length 3 years for laptops and desktops 2 years for tablets The warranty durations listed here have been set to cover the minimum amount of time manufacturers usually offer support for security updates and bug fixes. Wirelessly connecting to the IT network (for portable devices) Devices should support the wifi standard 802.11ac Wave 2. But it’s recommended that devices meet wifi 6 (802.11ax). Screen size (for tablets only) 9.7 inches When to meet this standard Laptops, desktops and tablets should be replaced or upgraded now if they do not meet the operating system requirements of this standard. For everything else: check whether they can be upgraded or repurposed before choosing to buy any new devices make sure this standard is met when investing in new devices
  23. From my experience even if you help set it up as a Tech, it's never appreciated, rewarded, acknowledged or thanked - or reflected in the tech salary before or after, hence multiple people reporting similar issues on a particular thread.
