Morning, Started yesterday morning, but for some reason our entire network is on a go slow. Logins sticking on the 'welcome' screen forever. Only recent things that have changed are: Updated Impero to beta 5.1.12 Implemented new core switch (HP 2530-48G) I can't determine what it is, and I don't know where to look tbh! Help! I'm a network down!

Morning, Prior to be getting the job I'm in now, my predecessor had purchased about 32 Linx 8 tablets to integrate into the network. There are 1 or 2 knocking about already being used. I've now got the task if integrating these, but my biggest concern is that they need to be Windows 8 to be 'tablet-friendly' and the domain is only are 08R2 level. What large security risks could this pose, that can help me to put this task off until I get around to rebuilding the domain? OR, is it safe to do? But I'd be surprised... Thanks!

Nice and short one: Do you guys do tech support etc. for your friends/family for free? Or do you charge them? I've always been one to offer my help, but sometimes when a job takes up a large amount of time I feel maybe I should be charging? Or am I just being cruel wanting to do that...

I'll only be doing this when I have all HP switches. Currently a mix of HP and Netgear. We also have smoothwall, so hopefully your guide should be perfect!

I'm not going to pretend I know what that means... Don't think we have any VLANs now. There were some for an old BYOD system, but it was misconfigured so I ripped them all out.

Afternoon, This is not a topic for a Friday afternoon, but I'm going to ask anyway. Does anyone know of any good guides for configuring a BYOD network with Ruckus? I'm also a complete noob when it comes to VLANs, so if anyone has any information about those, it would be greatly appreciated! Ideally I want it nice and simple. I've got the WLANs in Ruckus, one with AD authent and one with the Guest Pass system. I just need them both separate from the internal LAN :-) Thanks!

Want to sort it out ASAP, but it would definitely mean unplugging everything. Which, understandably, isn't possible during the school day!

Think I'm going to re-arrange it as patch/switch layout. I'm going to try and put the PP's lower down and have the 'server stuff' towards the top. Should make it easier on the eye! Here's what it (probably rotates again) looked before I put even those short cables in. Thankfully, this isn't my handiwork:

So it is...! When uploaded it was right haha! Yeah, I replaced all the cabling, looks a damn sight better than it did. Do you think putting the switch and patch panels one on top of another would work better?, rather than reaching all the way down over the others? Also, I've seen people cable out of the pp, behind, and then up and in front of the switch. Hiding the cables that way. Opinions on that?

I came into this job 6 months ago and have a long way to go before things are right, but I'm wanting to sort out the main server rack. The cables are very untidy and it's generally a mess (see below). I'm replacing one of the switches with a new HP switch, and the little mini HP switch in the rack currently is going back to the person I've borrowed it from. How would you go about cleaning all of this up? I don't have any money left, so I can't purchase another cab for the patch panels etc. (which I'd like to do). Thanks!

I'm constantly thinking this. I know we're here to support the staff, and they're not expected to be overly technical, but sometimes I worry about the requests I'm given...

I'm in complete agreement there. And I try and be diplomatic about my answers where possible. But staff (teaching in particular) don't ever seem to take it as an answer. Or at least, not in my experiences!

Scary, isn't it. I want to ask your opinions and advise. - How do you say the word no (when referring to support requests that may not be possible etc.) - How do you get people to accept the word no - How do you take the word no yourself I personally find it very difficult to say "no", or "that's not possible". I always try and find a work around or help people out, but sometimes I get more than I bargained for. As a NM I feel it's important that I should be able to say no and have people accept that, when people don't seem to...

Morning, This is something that's only an 'in my head' plan at the moment, but it definitely needs doing. I've taken over a secondary school as NM since September and can see the network is well overdue starting again. Just too much that is all over the place. How would you go about it? Rebuild every server or just redomain some? Can I use the same domain name when starting from fresh? Would you start the two networks alongside each other and then migrate everything when ready? Could do with as much help as you can give. If you've done it yourself, what sort of plans/time-scales/contingency did you have in place? Need to present it well to the HT and get it happening. I imagine a lot of it will be classed as 'a summer job' Thanks! :-)
