Hi, I have enrolled a couple of our new DfE HP Chromebooks and it all seems OK. I followed the guide on the gov.uk website but apart from saying "enrol them" there doesn't seem to be much info on whether there are any configuration changes I need to make in my GSuite Admin - Device settings. We haven't used Chromebooks up until now - so not sure if there is a best practice guide as to what settings we should configure for these school-managed devices. At the moment, I guess everything is still setup as it would have been on Day One. When our GSuite was setup by a partner (using the DfE funding) I know there were some DfE guidelines that they followed to configure settings for our Users - but I'm not sure if there are similar guidelines to follow for Devices. Out Windows network has GPOs for student computers and I wondered if there is a similar set of lockdown configs for Chromebooks. Does anyone have a guide/list of GSuite settings for Devices suitable for Chromebooks used in Primary they would be happy to share? Thanks in advance

Hi, We have just taken delivery of some DfE funded HP Chromebooks. I have found a guide to setting them up on the gov.uk website: https://get-help-with-tech.education.gov.uk/devices/enrol-chromebooks-with-user-logins but before I start, I just wondered if it is as simple as following their guide (as I have seen a couple of threads regarding the Cisco Umbrella app and incorrect advice from DfE!) - or are there any little quirks or niggles I need to look out for? We have GSuite setup and are currently using Google Classroom. These new HP Chromebooks will be for some of our pupils to use at home. Any advice gratefully received! Thanks

OK, that's great, so if the pupils have handed in one set of photos and then decided to change them, the teacher can still see the originally handed-in ones and they will always be in the pupil's Drive folder? I can see all sorts of potential for confusion there!! Ah well, I think I might suggest the Google Doc and paste photos into it for next time! As Admin, am I able to see into the pupils' My Drive folders?

We are using GC. We did think about posting the videos there and then considered how the parents might share the videos with close family (as there is likely to be some element of sharing to grandparents, etc) - and didn't want to encourage the potential sharing of Google Classroom logins, so an unlisted YouTube link distributed via our parent comms system was the alternative we came up with!

Hi there, One of our teachers set an assignment in Google Classrooms asking for photos to be uploaded. When she goes to the assignment in the classroom she can see that all the class have "handed in" and some pupils have handed in more than one photo (and it says under their name how many attachments there are). This all looks fine - however, when she goes into the Class Drive folder, there looks to be at least one pupil who has numerous photos in the folder - however on the assignment, it only shows as 1 photo handed in?! I can't see what might have happened? Could it be that some pupils attached multiple photos, then handed in, then unsubmitted, removed some photos and then handed-in again? Also, some of the photos in the Class Drive have the teacher as the owner, but some have the pupil as the owner (all pupils show as having handed-in). What causes the ownership of the photo change? Is it the "handing in" process? I did suggest that the teacher creates a blank Google Doc for each pupil to paste their photos into and then hand in, however the teacher thought it would be easier for the pupils to just upload photos ... which I guess it is, but I just can't explain what I see in the Class Drive folder as opposed to what the Assignment! Can anyone help to shed any light?

Good shout .. but I don't think that's happened here as our user accounts were created by uploading a .csv, so no syncing takes place. Name and surname fields are all populated - so I don't think there are any gaps. I will uninstall and reinstall the app to see if that sorts it out ...

As far as I know, no-one has left or been removed ... I will uninstall and re-install the app to see if that sorts it out. If it's just a funny app thing, that's fine ... I was just a bit worried that someone from outside our organisation had managed to join one of our classrooms - but as I can't see them in the web version, I don't think that's the case!

Hi there, I have the Google Classroom app installed on my phone and in one of the classrooms in the People section, under the Students list there is an entry for "Unknown User". If I go to the same Classroom on my web browser, I cannot see the unknown user. Is this just something funny with the app, or is there someone who has tried to join the classroom?

I imagine most children would be using their own home computers/ipads/tablets - we haven't given any devices out to families so far, but I guess that might come for some in the future. All sorts of OS ... I'm just struggling to see how if in GSuite admin, the Student group has You Tube turned off .... why can they open full YouTube from a clip that has been attached to a Google Classroom assignment ...?!

We do block access to YouTube for all pupils at school via our content filter policy. I am just really thinking more for when the children might start to have to use Google Classroom at home. The teachers are likely to want to put some YT clips into assignments for them to watch - but from the testing I have done with a test pupil account at home, I can open the YT clip and play it but also click on the YouTube logo that's on the bottom right hand side of the clip and this then opens up the full YouTube window. I have made sure that the YouTube app isn't available for the pupils via the Google Apps waffle - however this doesn't stop the full YouTube window from opening for them. Are there any other setting in GSuite Admin that I can enforce that would prevent the full YT window from opening?

Is there another way to do this? It would be great if the staff could individually post to the school YouTube channel without having to login/out again (I can see all sorts of confusing arising there!) ... or is creating a new user with "School Name" the only way to go? Thanks

I guess I want the school laptops to forget the last logged on user, but when the children login to Google at home, if I am enforcing this mode will it cause problems with them having to login every time at home? Or is there a way to force this mode via a Windows GPO which would then only be applied to school computers?

Hi @mavhc, thanks for your reply. We do currently approve videos for our users but I was just trying to see if there was a way to stop them opening YouTube from the little logo at the bottom of a clip inside an assignment, as that then opens full YouTube with all the list of suggested clips down the right hand side and gives them the opportunity to fall down the YT rabbit hole and distract themselves from what they should be doing! YouTube isn't available as an app from their app launcher as we have switched it off in GSuite but the opening of clips inside an assignment allows them to open YT in a new window. Just wondering if it's possible to prevent this.

Hi, Is there a way to remove the "Contacts" app from the Google app launcher (just for our Pupil OU)? I have looked in the GSuite Core Apps list and in Additional Google services - but can't seem to see it anywhere. Our pupils don't have access to Gmail and our Senior Leadership team would prefer for the pupils not to be able to see a list of all the other pupils in the school directory. Is there a way to remove "Contacts"? Thanks

Hi, I have been trying to find the best way for teachers to include YouTube clips in their Google Classroom assignments. So far, I have come up with the following options but would welcome any advice or suggestions! YouTube is currently blocked for pupils inside of school, so these options are more for if we need to move to remote learning due to lockdown/pupil isolation. When adding YouTube clips to a Google Classroom assignment, I have asked staff not to use the built-in YouTube search option when adding the clip as there doesn't seem to be any way to playback the search returns before adding them to the assignment. Instead, I have advised them to search for their clips outside of Google Classroom and make sure they have watched them through (to the end!) before copying and pasting into the assignment as a YouTube URL. I have found that even when the pupils play the clips back from inside GC, the option to view on YouTube is available as a click option from the bottom of the clip. Is there a way to prevent them from going out to YouTube from the clip? I have looked at using https://safeyoutube.net/ for teachers to create safe links and post these into the assignment instead ... is that a good idea, or is there another way to stop pupils from opening YT? Hi I have been searching all through the GPO - Chrome group policy settings to find a setting which will allow the browser to forget the last logged in account. On the pupil desktops we have a shortcut to Chrome but it always remembers the last logged user- is there a way to stop it? Thanks

Will this stop students trying to join Google Meets when they haven't signed in properly? For example - sometimes when using a shared device at home, the student is still logged in as another user rather than their school user when they try to access their Google Meet. In this instance, they ask to join the meeting and are held in a type of "lobby" area. Whenever this happens, our teachers decline the request. It would be great to be able to limit Google Meets to only the students in the Google Classroom that the Meet belongs to - I just wonder if this change would put a tick in that box?

I looked at a site called ViewPure a few years ago which did a similar thing, but there were some replies on here that it was categorised as a Mature site for some reason, so I veered away from it. This looks just the ticket though :-)

I've just been asked if we can start using Zoom instead of Teams - as the people who organise the meetings seem to be having lots of trouble when trying to get external attendees into Teams meeting. And there are apparently bits of functionality missing when joining the Teams meeting as a guest (unable to join in with the Chat function is one of them). I know at the beginning of lockdown, using Zoom was a no-no ... but from reading this thread, it seems as though things have changed slightly. Although, we have Teams and I would prefer to stick to using it! I am struggling to combat the tide of favour for Zoom! The meetings are for staff, so no pupils would be involved.

Has anyone applied for this? We have O365 through our current learning platform, but I started setting up GfE earlier this year (as I wanted to compare what it had to offer different from O365). We don't use either with the pupils - the staff are currently using Teams to communicate and we have had them using OneDrive for a few things prior to this. I know there are some people here who use both (and I was initially tempted to use O365 for the business side of things and GfE for theclassroom teaching/pupils) but I wondered if this might offer the perfect opportunity to get GfE properly up and running for use as a classroom tool. I have read through the info and wondered who the certified partners might be? £2k does sound like a lot of money ... and our GfE is partially setup already ...
