Basically what my usual supplier has told me. I would like to use the AC as it does make a difference especially in high density classroom environments. Tread carefully, I have been using the AC7260 from Intel. Sadly with one chassis from VeryPC they just didnt work and have been nothing but trouble.

Hi All I have around about 5 hours to find and price up 30 laptops. We have a very nice Meru AC wireless system so obviously I would like to take that option. However unless I go for a custom build system I cannot really find your Dell or HP laptops with built in AC. Of course I could upgrade them afterwards but I know especially HP have a very script White List on allowed hardware so could invalidate all support/warranty Question is do I just stick with N which meru copes with just as well as AC, or do I go ahead and get the AC on board from the start Further to that, Anyone doing some good deals on 30 laptops for the end of month sales target's

If its mission critical (which I would say yes) get originals from one of the channel suppliers or your preferred main hardware supplier. If they have access to the channel they will be able to get one next day. I use logmeinpro. 2 Machines I got around £60 a year. All I have done is found an old I3 HP desktop and run it on there as it sits in my server room 24/7. Once I am in to that I can start using RDP to access servers et al. Works a treat and security is much higher than the free. Also free version has limited features with acceleration and bandwidth management. For £60 you cannot go wrong,

If you go that route you would get the latest kit as you say. However as you are not using monitoring software or network based features for multiple devices cannot see the benefit of 1k over say £200, depends how old you unit is of course.

The APC units are good kit, I would just look at replacement batteries If you get chance when school is finished, run a calibration test on it. This will place it into failover mode until batteries run out, and then will report back with how long they would last. I would suggest if there is no money at the moment stress how important a UPS is as well all know. Quite often UPS batteries fail because they are randomly used and also kept on charge, those SLAB batteries need cycling now and again to keep them fresh otherwise they fail. As a matter of course I run a Calibration test every fortnight and I current have 2 Smart 1500's with 2 1/2 year old batteries that still work perfectly Just to give you an idea on price, APC UPS 3000 BATTERY (RBC43) - www.misco.co.uk Worth checking correct models of course and finding and good price/supplier. You can buy 3rd party batteries but personally I would steer clear.

Hi All, Strange request, I am looking for a Smoothwall consultant / expert / guru who would be able to assist in a Smoothwall Setup. As always I am never finding the time to sit down and actually spend a day or two getting smoothwall how we require, so It has sat since September not being used (linux software version, LEA Licence) Having spoken to Smoothwall Direct they are quoting circa £900 per day just for remote support, Im sure they are very good but top doctors probably do not charge £900 a day. Is there anyone out there willing to take this little task on, Assist me in creating a solid Framework for BYOD to match up with our new Meru wireless system? Thanks.

Memory Pools (Windows)

Im going to ditto Steve, That is page file. Thats quite large to be honest. Only time I have seen this before is with an AV configuration using Sophos on the Host which well, not good. Being as you have 128GB of RAM pagefile usage will be minimum. I am still currently running 2008R2 here and even on a host with 32GB I have seen 1 or 2 GB pagefile when I testing failover by switching the other host off. Im not sure how cost effective contact Microsoft will be. In your situation I would probably start with the basics. Stop all VM's, Leave just the host running on its own for an hour, Dont switch off any services. Just watch any memory usuage, it will naturally increase a small amount over time but hopefully not too much, and then one by one switch them on individually. But wait you cannot do that during school time unless you have remote access from home and can do it over night or a weekend. I cannot be much further help than that, If its becoming such an issue there are daily issues and servers/backups failing I would personally considering getting in consultancy support. By finding someone who's job it is to manage Hyper-V every day as a second pair of eyes I find much easier, yes its costly but at the end of the day It could save you months of issues. There doesn't seem to be much to go on. Have you had any response from VMWARE?

Ive got one of those, it wont go away issues I cannot seem to solve. I have have a random recurring issues with students shared drives not mapping. A pupil will logon, everything maps correctly, printers, 3 other shared drives, All apart from their Profile Drive. This on my network is set as N: This only happens randomly. That pupil can move to another machine, and the issue goes away. If you restart the PC and log back in on that machine its still the same. However If I get another pupil to log into that machine it does not become an issue. I have been through all off the usual "first step" diagnosis. I have ruled out permissions, also my redirection policy is set to Microsoft Standards. All machines are set to wait for network. One of the other mapped drives they have access to is on the same server and does not get effected. The machine continues with network access as normal, and its connected to a new HP1910 switch with 2GB Trunk link to the core. Event viewer only shows 1 error which is attached below. Machine is windows 7 64bit, latest updates and the fileserver is windows server 2008R2 with latest updates. Come to a stumbling block now, its not a major issue that it effects everyone, but can be disruptive if 1 or 2 pupils a lesson cannot access their network share and have to move PC's If anyone has any tips, it could do with them?

You would be amazed if this report would have shown Cisco to whoop the Meru do you think this report would have been public, not a chance. Have a look for all of the Cicso based reports that say its the best in the world. Why didnt they check it against Ruckus or other competitors in the market, maybe they did but just ommitted it from the report. Im saying this even though I have gone for Meru. There are only a few true independant sources, and then you cannot be sure these have been influenced. Nothing better than seeing it in action.

Youre quite right. I understand RF to a high level being a licenced radio amatuer so can understand that interference will always be there. I have gone for a Meru solution. This was after much deliberation and investigation. Mainly based on the actuall company who are supplying and fitting it and the schools that I visited that were using it. Lets see if in 2 months time I start moaning about my decision.

Wonder if above is possible. Having spent most of this morning look at group policy I cannot find a way of stopping this. Some of our Pupils are creating hidden folder in their share area and trying to hide silly things in them. Now I can see them and delete but its a tedious task. I wonder if there is any way to stopping them having the ability to do this?

I did research into areohive. At the end of my looking into them as a product, there seemed to be some issues with broadcom chipsets (cannot remeber which ones). The products are very well priced for the hardware themselfs, and performance wise would compare to the big market players. What ruled them out for me was their software, seemed very much like meraki and designed for business and conference centres as in configuration. I still haven't chosen between Ruckus and Meru, all the boxes for Ruckus are ticked but also hearing locally of great Meru stories, it makes it very tough. Im not going to go AC with Ruckus which saves quite a bit, but have left scope in the future to purchase AC points if new devices make the need nessacary, and the ruckus by back scheme looks as if it could help out here. I did miss 1 answer from ruckus, and thats where you can do bandwidth throttling via their AP's, I want to throttle our BYOD for Staff and Guests, so as to make sure they dont take our bandwidth. If it didnt I could always do this via smoothwall after our install over the summer of course.

I have looked at MDT, trouble I am having is actually getting the thing to boot to another CD or USB device. It boots fine to a Windows DVD but nothing else. They are going out the window soon, horrible rubbish.

Thanks for your view point, all extremely valid. We are only looking at 15 - 20 AP's which isn't as large an investment, only being a small site. As you rightly say the Ruckus Solution is using their mid range zoneflex 7372. I have tried researching online but cannot find any pointers as to when it first hit the market or any information on its life span. Being as the quote we have had is very low I tend to belive it could be end of life sooner rather than later. However, I have balance a very tight budget, A network that needs improvement everywhere due to years of under investment and a complete change in policy and direction within ICT at the school. This is going to be a much harder decision than the Core and Edge switching project. I don't want to invest poorly, on the same hand I don't want to dive into an AC rich environment meaning I have to take money away from either the Core network or Virtualisation next year, A great wireless network with Bottle necks, or a great core with old wireless. I suppose these are the decisions we are paid to take, and we have to live by the sword as they say.
