  1. David Baldacci and Linwood Barclay are decent thriller/action writers. Do you like police procedurals/crime novels?
  2. Admittedly some of them will be part of a 2009 image, but others are from last summer - and this was actually seen a couple of times when those drivers were current. It will have to be considered if all else fails. Cheers.
  3. Yeah done that, thanks. Nothing in the logs. It's as if the wi-fi and the laptops think they have a connection, and the network standards seem to be in place and working, but it's just locking out progression of the full log on and staying that way. Odd.
  4. Thanks for the reply.
  5. Thanks for these suggestions anyway.
  6. Clutching at straws really prior to investigation - have had a few laptops come up with a 'limited or no connection' error, but even when relocating them to our own individual AP the error persists, and will not connect to the wi-fi. Re-imaging does the trick, and that's an easy way out, but it's an incident management solution and not a problem management one. Aruba wi-fi, Toshiba laptops, can be any laptop at any time - no predictors, no pattern. Waiting for the next one to do the same so's I can investigate a bit more, but meanwhile...any thoughts? Cheers.
  7. Does any school out there have a dedicated network for Music, in order to deliver music tech courses? Ours was custom-built out of our old scraps by a music tech a few years back, then was suddenly dropped in our laps, and is becoming an unweildy beast that is demanding more and more money and more and more support time. Just wondered if anyone else had a separate set-up for Music and whether it had become part of the mainstream ICT Support development plan and budget. Cheers.
  8. I believe you can get support for it - I think they send you a mail stating as much when you download it.
  9. I guess schools will survive, much as they did before EMBC came along. Just have to do things a different way.
  10. There's a free password change app here: Burconix - Professional ICT Solutions for Education and SME.
  11. Absurdly, it looks as if a simple switch restart has made the problem go away. Am monitoring the situation, but that really does seem to have worked, despite the lack of errors in the logs. Thanks for suggestions - will keep them in mind for the future.
  12. The cynic in me - a large part of me, admittedly - thinks the LEA/EMBC will make it as tough as they can do for people to leave. I'm not even in favour of leaving - only securing the best deal for the school. In many ways, it makes sense to stick with what you have if it suits your needs, which the current service mostly does. I just want to know it's a level playing field. A lot that's said in the tech meetings and written in various litarature does seem to favour a single train of thought.
  13. I'm with you here...I've been given all kinds of scare stories in the past from them - particularly when we used our own internal IP range for years, and the use of the dreaded internal proxy - but I feel able to sort the wheat from the chaff...other people are, shall we say, more inclined to believe every word they say. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's deliberate, but I do tend to think that they can sometimes only present one side of the story and that the story can be tailored to a specific audience.
  14. I think it's likely that our HT, BM and SIMS Manager will pick up things from all sorts of people over the coming months, then the LA will be telling them one thing and I will probably be telling them another. Confusion, as ever, will reign.
  15. Thank you - that's the one. Looked very promising, but yes, I guess time is the real problem taking it further. Hope there are more, though.
  16. No, not the LEAMIS one - we have two people going to that. No, the one I'm on about is for network managers and technicians set up by network managers and technicians, but I forget exactly who organises it. I have it in my old e-mails somewhere. It's held in Leicester - I think there have been 3 meetings so far.
  17. I keep trying to get over to the tech support group meetings in Leics which started last year, but every time so far something has come up - but I guess this sort of thing is dicussed, if only informally. Must try and get to the next one!
  18. Me neither - it does seem very secretive at times.
  19. Yeah I'm coming to terms with that now...I've just gone into teacher mode for a moment: I want to know and I want to know right now! I'll slap my own wrist.
  20. Telepathy v2 is SO last year. I've moved on to Magic 8 Ball v 3.2.1 (Linux), which comes with a free upgrade to Ouija 4.
  21. Thanks for that. I have already begun the process of looking at alternatives, but in my position I can only recommend and if we're still with the LEA at that point then the SLT will also listen to their recommendations. I'm trying to get a feel for how much more costly it will be, so's I can give our BM a heads-up on projected budgets, as we're revising our 3 year plan. I know it's a way off, but when we're looking at costs for 2013, a serious hike in ISP costs is a major consideration. Cheers.
  22. Now why didn't I think of that? Oh, that's right, I did. And got pointed towards the EIS site. I also mailed - and got pointed towards the EIS site. As yet I've had no word from my carrier pigeon, my morse code is a bit rusty, and moths ate my semaphore flags. I have considered rendition and a spell in Guantanamo for those whose lips are currently sealed, but apparently that's considered 'a tad harsh' by my therapist. The reason I asked on here was just in case someone 'in the know' was lurking in their cyber-guise and was willing to spill the beans. Never mind, I think Jeffrey Deaver is looking for a plot for the next Bond book.
  23. Yes - unfortunately it's a bit out of date - I know they've had at least one if not two meetings since about this very issue.
  24. Leicestershire.
  25. Other than for the personal gain of relevant qualifications, if you already run your support along the Becta/FITS guidelines, is there anything practical to be gained from going through the courses? Cheers.
