Fortunately, nothing in my job description covers licensing - it's just an accepted part of my job. I have covered myself so far with reports in which I explain the situation, provide a variety of options, and make recommendations. After mailing them I then insisted on obtaining a reply stating it had been read and contents noted. I was just wondering if I'd covered myself enough and what other people did. Cheers.

Was that just your generic software or all faculty-based software as well? Cheers.
-
I guess what I'm saying is how would people 'prove' they have raised concerns and made recommendations. I was wondering whether anyone goes as far as having a 'get out of jail free' document signed by SLT or just keep all relevant e-mails.
-
Not possible. I can only advise and make recommendations.

Does anyone here raise licensing issues with SLT only to have them ignored? If so, what do you do to protect yourself from any comebacks if audited?

We've been buying stations from Stone for about 4 years now and have always found the service, delivery, pre-sales and post-sales and stations themselves all of a very good standard. The fact is, Stone are getting bigger not smaller, and that is a concern, as that often signifies a dip in standards. Until that happens, though, we'll certainly be sticking with them.

On the same issue, but approaching it from a different perspective, is anyone using Access to run SQL commands and finding it meets all necessary requirements for SQL use? Cheers.

In what way did you install each student as a user, and did you not find anything that required higher level permissions? Thanks again in anticipation.
-
Does anyone out there in secondary schools allow students to use MySQL? If so, I'd be really interested in finding out how you got around permission issues, as I understand that admin rights are required in some instances. Also, did you install MySQL as an entire package on stations, or the server part centrally? Thanks in anticipation.

Upgraded from XP to 7 and the laptop initially worked fine...but now every time I start up from cold I have no mouse or keyboard at log on...but after a forced restart they are there...it's almost as if the drivers don't load the first time...have uninstalled and reinstalled latest drivers, but no joy...any theories? Cheers.

You say it's a 'requirement'. Who requires data to be kept that long? Just wondering if that's a local thing or a national one. Cheers.
-
At a push we could go back a year because we do an end of year data backup tape, so it's a fall-back option if needed.
-
Ours is usally deleted after a term, or once we can confirm that leavers have actually left. In 15 years I've never had a student ask for work after they've left. Never been asked to keep the data, either.

Financially, given the changes we expect to make over the next 3 years, moving back to the SA doesn't work out. We'd be looking at in excess of 15 grand a year, and because we have a replacement cycle of 3 years anyway, anything we bring in over that period will have 7 on board anyway and are a built-in cost for us...but it's something to review each year.

Good old Microsoft - I have an e-mail from them telling me it remains both user or device, but then I've had so many different interpretations from even them that it makes me wonder if anyone knows what's going on. Anyway, thanks for the info but we're not on School Agreement so can't obtain the bolt-ons. Cheers.

Just wondering what people do regards licensing Office across a TS for students. I know that it's down to the school to 'police' this and ensure that students are correctly licensed, either by user or device, but I'd be interested to know how other schools address this issue as it's a bit of an administrative nightmare.

Sorry for jumping into this thread, but does anyone know if EMBC block Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, and if so whether there's a workaround? Thanks.

People here would go ape if our servers were down for that long - we nearly had riots when an air-con fault saw them off on a Monday morning until around 9.15!!!

We have a Quantum unit for each network (Curric and Admin), the latest of which does 800gb native. We also back up a media area to a separate NAS. Unless you want to spend a fair bit of money, you could look at staggering the backup into several sections so that something different gets backed up each night, but that over a week it all does.
-
We back up legit media files...these files are stored in a specific area, and anything outside that area we exclude media files from the backup...we then backup the media area to a NAS, with data etc backed up normally.
-
We get the users to do the work themselves...they have to prove to a teacher and us that everything in their area needs to be retained...only then do we increase.
-
Can't agree that it's draconian...encourages discipline with file management, which can only help in their own and potential employment use, surely...unless they become a teacher, of course ;-)

Funny...10 years ago the quota was 12Mb for our 1500 students...now they start with 750 and, provided they can prove that nothing in their area can be deleted, can apply for an increase when the limit is reached. Staff have no quota - read into that what you will...but it's the 200 staff who have the SAN!!
