You can get the .NET 7 Runtime from winget. winget install --id=Microsoft.DotNet.Runtime.7 -e If you take a look at the output in the terminal window, it should show you a link to the installer file (Haven't got a Windows device to hand to check, but most things on winget are MSI as far as I've noticed)

Indeed, schools already do this with existing systems (ParentMail, Weduc, Arbor, Bromcom etc) because they are paying a lot of money for them and thus want to get the most out of their investment. I know, as a parent across 3 schools and staff across many more, I've seen the endless stream of information that has no relevance to me. The negative impact here is that parents get fed up and some remove the app altogether or turn off notifications. That's much more unlikely to happen with a system like WhatsApp, because it's simply tied in to a platform they use heavily already.

I know a lot of parents who don't use/check email at all. But they will check WhatsApp, because they want to stay in touch with friends and family. The same people usually have emails flooded with spam.

Yes, hardly anyone I know uses text messages these days. Especially because you can't send media for free via text. WhatsApp allows for free media messaging with no worry of being charged the cost of an MMS message. As for email, as am EdTech speaker once said at a conference... "Email is what the old people do!" If anything, in my experience, email has become much more for formal communication, whereas the bulk of personal messaging takes place on social platforms like WhatsApp, SnapChat, Instagram etc.

How would you engage parents with RSS?

I think we forget sometimes that we are in a technical forum where we care about these sorts of things. The vast majority of users don't know or care for RCS. [sadly] A large portion of users also don't care for cookies, personal data usage and the like. Admit it, how many times have you seen a user at your school just press "Accept" when faced with the annoying cookie notice? Even when the major T&Cs change to WhatsApp took place a couple of years ago, only those in the know really moved away to Signal or Telegram. But then an awful lot moved back to WhatsApp, because what's the use in a messaging platform when none of the people you want to message are there? Communication will take place where the people are. The vast majority of those are still on WhatsApp and will probably be there for many years to come. Whether Apple implement RCS or not!

I'm not saying that there aren't people that don't use WhatsApp, but if you had to pick a single messaging platform that is most widely used, WhatsApp is top of the list. Far more people use WhatsApp than possibly all of the school communication platforms put together! (I've not got any stats to prove that, but I'd be surprised if that wasn't the case, given the value of the company for starters!)

Thoughts? Personally, I figured this might be a potential winner for schools when it comes to the ever growing challenge of parental communication. There are a plethora of parent communication tools and platforms out there. In my experience, there are several challenges with all those I have come across: 1. Cost - Some of these platforms are extremely costly! 2. Engagement - Getting parents/carers to actually download the apps and then sign up can be ever so cumbersome and challenging! 3. Features - Most of these platforms are severely lacking in features. Some in app options from built in MIS comms tools don't even allow hyperlinks! I could go on, but that's just a few... Whatever we think of WhatsApp, Meta and Zuck, there's no getting away from the fact that WhatsApp is the most widely used messaging platform in the world. I feel like Channels will bring the best of some much needed options in terms of privacy (no visibility of numbers) and controlling the conversation (1 way comms from the school and not an open area for debate). Would be good to hear what others think...

EE seem to have changed their IP ranges for WiFi calling and so I need to get the new IP range unblocked on my LGfL firewall. Does anyone know the new range or is anyone able to do a packet capture on their own network to find out what IP ranges are? I had this as the previous range on the firewall: 109.249.0.0/16 UDP 500, 4500

My first gaming memory was Pong on the Atari PONG. What a machine that was! Following that, it was Way of the Exploding Fist on the Commodore 64. Neither computers/consoles were mine. Played them both at relatives houses. My first computer/console was the Amstrad CPC464. Gotta love the memories of my parents allowing me to go play on the computer for 1 hour and the game taking 55 minutes to load! Kids these days will never know such pain!

If you're coming from London Bridge, get the Northern line to Moorgate, then you can change to the Elizabeth line from Liverpool Street station (There is an entrance to the Elizabeth line from Moorgate station) If you're coming from King's Cross, you can get the Circle, Metropolitan or Hammersmith & City line to Farringdon, then you can get the Elizabeth line from Farringdon. (You could also take the Northern line to Moorgate from King's Cross too, but it's 3 stops as opposed to 1) Once on the Elizabeth line, you'll need the train going to Abbey Wood and alight at Custom House for ExCeL. The Elizabeth line will get you there a lot faster than the DLR.

Your best bet would be to ask the school's nominated contact to log a ticket with AdEPT Education with the details of what's happening. AdEPT are the company that manage technical services for LGfL and AdEPT manage and host LGfL StaffMail. They will be in the best position to advise and/or resolve the issue.

Bing is literally making things up now! I've been asked to deliver a workshop on AI in Education. The organiser has asked me for a session description. So, I asked Bing to write me one... It's literally made up quotes from people who have never attended a session that I have never delivered! 😂 Conversely, this is what ChatGPT gave me... It feels like only Microsoft could take a half decent tech like ChatGPT and screw it up by forcing it to marry Bing! 🙈 I fear for what's coming with Google and Bard! 😳

Yeah, I got access last week. It's interesting how the answers it gives can be quite different to ChatGPT even though they are essentially based on the same thing, except that ChatGPT (GPT-3) is limited to 2021 data whereas Bing (GPT-4) is able to look for up to the minute information. I was quite impressed by the new Edge as well. It looks a lot sleeker than the old "blocky" Edge and it has some very nice built in features that don't require more extensions. However, I'm still finding Arc browser to be an awesome alternative.

Not sure that this will help everyone, but if you're coming from the North West (and/or can get to a nearby airport) return flights to Heathrow (from Manchester) are currently around £116 (cheaper if you're only carrying hand luggage). I know it's not the ideal solution, but figured it might be an option for some.

Is there any particular reason why you'd prefer to use GPO to deploy the extensions, as opposed to managing the browser via the Google Workspace Admin Console? I used to deploy extensions using GPO, before we started using Google Workspace (Google Apps for Education at the time!) but found that it started to clash as we made more use of the Admin Console. I find that it's much easier to manage if you simply use the Admin Console to manage the browser and just force users to sign in to the browser using GPO.

I was always of the understanding that you had to be chosen to apply. Has it now changed that any school can apply? We're in a bit of a risk quandry. I implemented a Meraki network at my 2 schools back in 2017. At the time, Meraki were very much telling us that when licenses on devices expired, you wouldn't be able to manage devices in the Dashboard anymore, but the devices would keep on working. This obviously changed over the years and now devices will stop working as soon as the license expires, which I am sure most here are aware of. I'm now weighing up whether it's more prudent to replace most of our network kit with something like UniFi, as opposed to renew licenses on now ageing Meraki hardware. Either way, it's just another difficult financial conversation with school leaders, who still after all these years, don't prioritise IT. The DfE programme is great, but without the option to apply, schools could end up paying thousands for kit, that they didn't end up needing to spend and couldn't really afford in the first place.
