It's a bit short notice, but I'm meeting with the DfE's cyber security lead tomorrow morning at 9:30am to discuss the NCSC's cyber security training resources. This stems from a post I made on LinkedIn a few weeks ago mentioning that the training hadn't been updated in over 3 years. Did anyone have any suggestion for items that need to be included in any update of the resources? Or even general thoughts about the materials. 💌 Gmail launched 20 years ago today! ⭐ I still remember getting an invite (thanks Neowin!) to setup a Gmail account, which was a much needed upgrade from what was a very limiting 2MB mailbox with Hotmail! 😱 🥳 Congratulations on 20 years Gmail!

As far as I'm aware, YouTube Premium is for consumer use only (I haven't checked lately, but I'd be pleasantly surprised if this has changed!)

I wasn't comparing software to the OS. I was saying that 100% cloud based software is future. It's not just an appeal. ChromeOS is used by 1000s of companies worldwide. As much as people keep saying "you can't include Google in that example" the question is why not? They are one of the world's largest companies and have vastly greater challenges than most. If ChromeOS & Chromebooks are suitable for them, I can't see how it can't be considered an "Enterprise or educational grade" operating system. No one is saying you must run just Windows, macOS or ChromeOS only. Most organisations will have a mixed environment of sorts for some time to come. But to suggest that ChromeOS is not enterprise grade is wholly mistaken in my opinion.

You'll probably find that logging in via the splash screen will automatically login to any further Google logins once the browser has launched. So, it's better to do it this way. You can also control what domains can login to the browser using either GPO or the Google Admin Console, so it adds a level of safeguards to your system.

Is there any reason you don't want them to sign in? There are so many benefits that come with sign in and the positives far outweigh any negatives, if any!

What @DGardiner said. If you're paying for Canva, please cancel the payment ASAP! Canva is 100% FREE for all schools. You can sign your whole school up for SSO using this form.

"Can't Imagine" being the key phrase here. Many, many organisations and professionals around the world use Chromebooks. Like it or not, browser based software is the future, or at least a big part of it. Take for example Canva. The company is worth $40bn at least based on September 2021 financial data. It's wouldn't be worth so much if it wasn't "for professionals". ChromeOS is different and not for everyone, but it's not just for non-professionals or employees of Google.

The most worrying thing about all of ESS's continued behaviour is just how many schools refuse to move to much better platforms!

They don't do hardware anymore. They closed that down in 2014. They still install and support CC4 for schools that want it (or don't!) and provide managed service to schools. Two of the secondaries we've taken on at our recently merged trust currently use RM for full SLA and have CC4 networks going back to BSF in 2009. Resistance and fear of change is the loose thread that is keeping them going. Not sure how long that will last though...

I've been an LGfL customer for 20 years. Whilst it has it's quirks compared to other ISPs, we've always found it very good value for money, especially with the value added extras included as part of your subscription.

RM's share price is plummeting wildly and they issued a profit warning in August 2022. Cash flow is definitely an issue, hence the request for upfront payments. My personal advice would be to look elsewhere.

I used RM CC2.4 as a student at school. Removed CC2.4 for vanilla XP/2003 in my first job as a Network Technician in 2004. Got TUPE transfered to RM in 2009 and supported the transition from vanilla XP/2003 to RM CC4 with Windows 7/2008. Left RM for a Network Manager role in 2014, supported CC4 for a few years before I replaced it with vanilla Server 2016/2019 and Windows 10. Inherited two schools in our Trust merger that use CC4, but thankfully, I'm not having to support it!

If it's Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Spotify or other consumer streaming services, then I think you should be a kill joy and switch it off. These services are not authorised for use in schools (except in very limited circumstances). Block by default and give schools the option to switch them on again. That option should be put behind the agreement wall that can be authorised only by the Headteacher, much like Remote Access Services.

No, worse, I think of all the reduced cost I missed out on for stuff that I inevitably bought at a higher price! 🙈

The last few Prime days have been terrible for me. A whole load of things on my shopping list and nothing on sale! Hope tomorrow is a better one!

I've got round this issue by installing the following 2 apps on the top level of our Google Workspace domain: Google Drive: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-drive/apdfllckaahabafndbhieahigkjlhalf Google Docs Offline: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-docs-offline/ghbmnnjooekpmoecnnnilnnbdlolhkhi Deploy them on your top level OU via Devices > Chrome > Apps and extensions > Users and browsers (Force Install) That should hopefully resolve the issue for you.

We ran uniFLOW Online at a school we look after for 3 years. It was implemented directly by Canon. Personally, for me, it was a total disaster. We had no end of issues since day 1. Staff would simply not be able to print, the Windows client would refuse to connect to uniFLOW Online. Even when it did, prints would simply not appear on the printers. I would log calls with Canon who wouldn't have a clue about how to support it and would eventually escalate the call to NT-Ware. It could take between 2 - 4 weeks to resolve issues at times. When the renewal came up, we dumped it as fast as we could and went with PaperCut MF and it's been great ever since. Sad that we can't seem to find a decent alternative cloud solution to PaperCut, but for now, PaperCut works and it works very well. I'd be interested to know what suggestions you have on cloud based alternatives that aren't uniFLOW Online or Hive, which I agree is not really cloud based at all.

Much like what the others have suggested, you just need to create a shared mailbox on the LGfL/AdEPT Support Site. When we were using StaffMail a few years ago, we had this setup with our Freshdesk. We've since moved to Gmail, but the principle was no different.
