It is something we are seriously considering here. Our budgets are being cut hugely and the prospect of renewing bladecenter and SAN on a rolling replacement is looking quite unlikely. So far we have moved shared drives, email and calendars to GAFE. The next likely candidates will be webservers, Moodle and print servers. If that all goes well I'll then look at moving Citrix, domain controllers and ultimately the proxy server. I think the drawbacks are going to be the leased line capacity and redundancy - So we'll be putting the server 'budget' into this and see how things go over a couple of years.

Of course the irony here is they are probably working better without updates than w8 does with them.

This sounds right to me. But do bear in mind year 3, and 4 and 5 and 6. What you should do is work out how much it costs over a 5 or 6 year upgrade cycle and then divide by that number. If EES is cheaper then go with that if it isn't then buy the licenses outright. Remember that if/when budget cuts happen you won't be able to use your office/windows without paying the subscription. If you buy outright you can just delay the upgrade.

My understanding was that they can only log into the chromebook with their school account with the setting that you described, but nothing stops them from opening another window and logging into another account when they are in the browser, same as if they logged into another webmail provider.

If you are not using external access the connection is likely to be direct through store front; although you may be using netscaler for load balancing. The STA is the secure ticket authority. In your netscaler and storefront settings you will point to the STA which resides on any server that has (xenapp/desktop) installed- I'm not really sure how relevant it is, other than they must have different ID's. The Citrix forums are a MUCH better resource for technical stuff than edugeek (although from what I've seen it seems to be the place to go to have an argument)

Check what STA servers are configured on Storefront. We use Xenapp and had lots of problems with clients refusing to connect with similar errors. It turned out that we had multiple STA servers that were using the same Vdisk meaning they had the same STA UID which caused a conflict (this needs to be unique). Running 'Prepare this server for imaging and provisioning' should reset this identifier but for some reason it doesn't on our setup. You can can check the UID in this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\system32\ctxsta.config

It depends on the type of report, class lists export as HTML - but larger reports are not performed everyday by teachers and can be done on a few machines with office installed - perhaps in a staffroom.

No Internet doesn't just mean there are no teaching resources it also means no Phone System or other communications systems. A judgement call needs to be made by HT as to whether this is a safe environment. A backup internet line is what we have! Google Docs are also available offline so it's a bit off-topic.

WiFi Makes me ill. Sick to death infact. I always thought it was due to the vagueness of "the internet doesn't work" that caused me headaches. Now I know it's all about the RF !

I made the assumption that your WiFi clients are on a different vlan. Clearly assumptions being the mother of all screw ups.

Ping the default route /server when it is working and run "arp -a" to show the arp table, note the mac addresses. Also do this from the switch that the AP is connected to. When the connection disappears run arp -again and see if the mac changes. If there is any layer 2 issues like network loops you will see here. If not then move up to layer 3.

^ thought server your risk assessment would have suggested SSL would be a good idea on anything displaying student information :-)

try pinging the default route and see if the mac address is changing. it's worth doing to rule out layer2 errors.

You won't get fined by the information commissions office if you 'are following their rules "carte blanche". Do you also risk assess against your own servers, with third party penetration tests etc as part of your risk assessment? Not many do.

Chromebooks run Android apps now, plus many have touchscreens and some convert to tablets. Just saying if you are comparing to ipads then they are also worth serious consideration.

We used to do it this way too. Now staff pretty much all use Google Classroom for assignments and all homework (where appropriate). It was nice to have everything in one place, but they seem to prefer the email/document integration with Classroom.
