  1. Hi All Boy am I confused!!! I am in the market to replace our aging Toshiba 2939DB set (very old, but what a great set it has been!) I have always been a fan of Sony's but having been a former salesman in an electrical store (which will remain nameless!) I began to go away from Sony and found they were overpriced and just not build like they were in the 80's and 90's. I still consider Sony to be a great in other areas of electronics but I just not sure anymore with the TV sets. I started to take great interest in Samsung sets and found the quality and price was appealing for what you got for you money so a few years ago I replaced my CRT monitor for my PC with a Samsung SM2032MW which I use as my monitor and for my PS3. Its been an ok set, great picture on HDMI and DVI but disappointed with how slow it is to navigate and some of the menu options and picture/sound settings not up to standard. Sound quality needs to be cranked up to hear anything! I stuck with Samsung and also purchased a DVD Hard Drive recorder from Costco. The Samsung DVDSH855M ( Samsung DVD-SH855M - DVD Recorder 250Gb Hard Drive: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics) to this date this has to be one of the worst buys I have ever purchased. Problems with DVD playback, freezing and other issues have really put me off from Samsung, for the moment at least. So now I want to spend about £800 max and want either a 37inch or 40inch set. I am really struggling which Brand to go with on this one. Even though we brought a Toshiba set years ago at that time it was the best set on the market and have not been disappointed with the set. Do Toshiba make good LED or LCD's. From reading reviews it seems like they are not as good as the competitors. Samsung make TV's at a good price with lots of features but my experience with the 20" hasn't been great and confused or do I take the plunge with either a Sony (with high prices, good features). I am also hearing good things about Panasonic these day's but never brought Panasonic, always been an admirer but never purchased. The features I am looking for is best quality possible for PS3 gaming, Bluray and DVD playback, I am thinking of investing in the HD service depending if I stick with Virgin or move to Sky and I am seriously interested in utilising the DNLA features of the set as I have a Netgear READYNAS box and want to be able to stream DIVX, music files wirelessly to the TV from the NAS or even a PC or laptop. I am hearing the TV sets out are not that great with DNLA??? as its technology which is fairly new. What sets would people recommend for £800 Max? Happy to purchase online and would prefer a 5 year warranty included. Also I am thinking to stay with LCD or LED? I am confused which one would be better for my uses. I would like good picture quality especially when watching Sports and documentaries. I am hearing also the sound quality isn't great on these sets but is there one better than others? I would be very grateful on peoples experiences based on my usage of a TV. I been looking in detail with the NX series of Sony's. Mainly 603 and 703. I also found a Samsung with 3D in my budget range, cant remember the model but other people on various forums have said its a decent set for the price especially with 3D. Not looked in great detail with the Toshiba and Panasonics.
  2. Hi If anyone has read my earlier posts, we are currently rolling out Windows 7 using WDS and MDT2010. We have not much issues deploying the image via WDS apart from 1 series of laptops where it isn't deploying via WDS. After discussions with Microsoft and a BIOS upgrade it doesnt seem to work so I was thinking maybe the problem is to do with the INTEL UNDI PXE-2.1 version that is installed on that laptop. Is there a way to upgrade this element of the network card or is this built into the ROM. We have another series of laptops where the laptops have the same INTEL PXE version and that works fine via WDS so am confused. I attach a picture of the version currently running on this particular laptop. From googling it seems there are newer version of this but I cant find a link on where I can download it from. Thanks
  3. Hi I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem and resolved it as I am having the same problem. I deleted some users who have now left weeks ago and staff who use OWA or Microsoft outlook on machines around the building, can still see these old users. It seems different users can see different deleted users. For example I see a colleague who left but my colleague cannot see that colleague when he logs in. Seems like some sort of caching issue. On the exchange server I have run the following commands: update-globaladdresslist -identity "Default Global Address List" -domaincontroller {domain controller names} Ran this command for both of our DC's. get-offlineaddressbook | update-offlineaddressbook Left it for 24 hours and it seems like it has cleared some but some old users can still be searched. When I run the update-globaladdresslist -identity "Default Global Address List" command I do get some yellow warning messages which say: WARNING: The recipient "Domain name/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/OAB Version 2" is invalid and could not be updated. WARNING: The recipient "Domain name/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/OAB Version 3a" is invalid and could not be updated. WARNING: The recipient "Domain name/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/Offline Address Book - \/o=school name\/cn=addrlists\/cn=oa" is invalid and could not be updated. I think these messages are related to why the old users are not clearing. Any suggestions on what I could do to resolve this? Thanks
  4. I am having a similar problem with a Novatech laptop which has the mobile intel 965 express chipset family graphics. We have just created some Windows 7 images and when I restore a Windows 7 image on a laptop with this particular build the driver in device manager has a yellow exclaimation mark. When I click on the device it says "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use" (CODE12). If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system. Has anyone seen this, can anyone help. I have looked on the intel website and already have the latest driver installed. I have uninstall the driver, restart the laptop and it picks up the same driver and then displays the same error message.
  5. I think I may have found an answer to this. I was just browsing the web and found someone else having a similar problem to fine. He is now trialing something called Cloudshare which allows an individual to run test VM's for FREE in a cloud!! CloudShare | Share Enterprise IT On Demand In The Cloud Its only on BETA but I might just give it a try, I will post my results once I copy a VM over to it. Each CloudShare Pro environment includes the following: Up to six VMs - Linux or Windows machines (licensing included) Flat network (each VM gets its own internal IP) Outbound access to the Internet Drag & drop file sharing from your desktop On-demand environment snapshots Private environments, accessible only to the author and invited peers Up to 10 monthly peer invites Invited peers can upgrade to become authors too, starting with the environment to which they were invited!
  6. Hi I am currently doing some testing with new products and some transition work. I have setup a few VM's but am really frustrated with how slow it is. My work laptop is running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit edition and is a Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26ghz with 4GB RAM. I currently have the following VM's running using Workstation 7. 1. Active Directory, DHCP and DNS and a domain controller with FSMO roles on Server 2008 64bit 2. Exchange 2007 SP1 on Server 2008 SP2 64bit 3. Exchange 2010 on Server 2008 R2 64bit 4. Windows Deployment Services/MDT2010 on Server 2008 R2 64bit 5. Windows 7 Enterprise client 64bit with Office 2010 only I am currently doing 2 separate pieces of work. One is related with deployment of Windows 7 and the other is Exchange work. I only turn on the VM's I require depending on the work I am doing at that time. Each VM has been allocated 1GB of memory and 1 processor and the VMs are stored on the laptops 5400rpm SATA drive. At the moment I am doing some transitioning work where I have 2 exchange servers and am testing the transition from 2007 to 2010. I have introduced a 2010 server and will be co-existing 2 servers on the 1 domain, I will be moving mailboxes from one server to another, testing OWA and other exchange features and once all is working from a testing point of view I will remove the 2007 server. For me to do this at the moment I need the DC and both Exchange servers turned on. The other 2 VM's are not turned on. I would have thought with 3 VM's I should be ok with doing some mild testing work. I am aware the Host OS is probably using 1GB ram as well but before I use VMware workstation I always tend to turn off any overheads which may be running e.g. items in the tray, virus scanner, windows gadgets etc so effectively the host is only running the bare minimum it needs. The problem I am getting is working with all 3 VM's on it just not practical and its very slow. I would think that upgrading the memory on the host from 4gb to 8gb would maybe do the trick but I have now found out that the laptop maximum memory support is 4gb and I doubt if work will buy me a new laptop. So i was thinking what the best way for me to do this. My office machine is a quad core and I could install 8GB RAM on there. My plan was to move these VM's over to the office machine and then for me to do this work over a VPN connection onto the corporate network and then use RDP and the resources of the local office machine to carry out this work. My question is would RDP offer me a good experience. My home internet connect is fairly quick and when I usually VPN onto my office machine the experience tends to be fine. Anyone else in my situation? what have you done? Unfortunately buying a better machine is not an option. If anyone has a solution how best would I approach moving the VM's of the laptop and moving the office machine? Thanks
  7. Sounds like your network speed or like the previous post with DNS. What happens if you try http://frogserver. Are you using a secure site https to access it? Have you tried in a browser going directly to the frog servers ip address. That will tell you if its DNS related.
  8. Just had a question about combining virtual disks on the SAN. I have populated the tray with 16 disks and have created 2 vdisk with a total of 6 datastores utilising 15 disks with 1 global hot spare. I have vdisk1- 500gb vdisk2 - 500gb vdisk3 - 1000gb vdisk4 - 500gb vdisk5 - 500gb vdisk 6 - 1000gb I now have a windows server utilising a datastore from one of these vdisks buts its near capacity of 500gb and I wanted to combine 2 datastores to give me 1tb. Am I able to do this via the Storage works web interface? I do have some data on each datastore. Is there a way for me to keep the data without destroying the vdisk structure? many thanks
  9. Hi Just wanted to see if fellow edugeekers use Quidco. Just found it recently and suprised i didn't start using it sooner. Ideal for people who do a lot of online shopping. Is there anything to look out for using Quidco?
  10. Hi It's the other way round, from a Windows 7 client we are not able to view shadow copies of network drives.
  11. Hi We are running Windows 7 Enterprise edition, it is on the domain, and we have several Network Drives mapped. The network drives are connections to Windows Server 2003 and 2008 systems. My issue is, I am unable to see any Previous Versions on those network drives. However, I am able to see previous versions on my local drives, so I know Volume Shadow Copies is working on my system. In addition, I am able to see Previous Versions on those same network drives on a XP client. Has anyone else seen this issue? Thanks
  12. had question related to this. We aren't actually having any issues with our Macs. We have Open directory only and just had a questions about join the Macs to the server. I use Directory utility to make a connection to the OD server. There is an option to 'bind' with Open Directory. Can I ask exactly what this does. I dont actually Bind to open directory, just add the OD server into the search list on the Macs and this seems to work fine. Just wanted to know really.
  13. I would love how to do this also. Its a right pain doing this on the master image. Its annoying that there is no msi which can be deployed via GPO.
  14. Thanks thats great I have made those changes and confirm they work.
  15. I have setup the office 2010 KMS Host license pack on one of our servers which is R2 as our original KMS host which activates our servers and windows 7 machines is windows 2008 which the office one doesnt support. So I have set this up and entered our agreement KMS key for Office but I have already installed Office on one of the test machines. How do i activate it with this host. I know for Windows 7 you can use the command slmgr /ato.... but does anyone know what the command is for office?
  16. Hi Does anyone know how on Windows 7 we can prevent showing the last user logged in and instead when the PC boots up it just prompts to enter a username and password. Is there a way to turn off user switching? Can these both changes be set using Group Policy? Thanks
  17. I am currently deploying 7 out to some workstations. On testing though I am finding that desktops and laptops are frequently going to sleep after about 10 minutes. The machines have to be pressed on by the power button for them to resume windows. Can I disable this via GPO if so how would I do it. Can someone provide me with the GPO link? We are running Windows 7 enterprise 32 bit supported by Windows 2008 DC's (not r2).

    ease of access

Dont think you can do with GPO but you can download a program on the local machine which can disable it for all users. you might need to rollout it out with the image of your machines, if you looking to deploy windows 7 out to others. You can install the ease of access disabler here: Disable Ease of Access Button on Vista Logon Screen - How-To Geek
  19. Thanks PaulJonze. Running that query has produced the results we required for our booking system. The extra good news also is now its noting producing records for other non timetabled groups. For example in the last query it would pick up things like department teaching time, personal tutoring time but now it is only showing records for a teacher teaching a particular subject at a particular time and this is far better for the room booking system as last time I remember a lot of the exporting information needed to be removed prior to the import. My knowledge with database's isn't great. Can I ask what the 'setid' does? Thanks again
  20. Hi I think I know the answer to this but thought I would check. After 10 years I am thinking of leaving Virgin to go to Sky as I am paying over the odds and Sky ATM are offering a better deal with more choice. I am happy to stay with Virgin if the price is right and I'll see what retentions say. If I don't get the deal I want I expect that I will lose my virgin email address which poses a bit of a problem for me as it was my first ever email addresses and everyone has got to know it. Does anyone have any advice on what I could do. I use Outlook so have all my emails backed up but not sure how it will work for current correspondence. With hindsight I understand that using my ISP email was a bad idea. I am thinking now to buy my own personalised email address. Would others recommend this? if so which is the best one to go for? any pitfalls to look at? Much appreciated.
  21. A year has gone by and now the time has come to reimport the new timetable from CMIS into our booking system but am having a few problems getting the correct data out of CMIS in the first place. Last year from the help of others on this thread I managed to compile a SQL statement which gave me the information for me to extract data out of tables on CMIS (day, start and finish time of a lesson, the teachers code or lectureid, the room they taught in, the teaching group and year group). select timetable.weekday, timetable.starttime, timetable.finishtime, timetable.lecturerid, timetable.roomid, teachinggroups.groupcode, timetable.courseyear from timetable inner join teachinggroups on timetable.groupid = teachinggroups.groupid where timetable.setid='2009/2010'; I thought this should work for the new timetable 2010/2011 so I ran the same query its given me nearly 7000 records which I though GREAT but the information it has reported back doesnt correspond with the real information in CMIS. Seems like there has been a lost in translation with some of the data. All the tables seem to be correct until it gets to 'groupcode' and then produces conflicting information. e.g. it says for a particular member of staff who would normally teach Science is now teaching English. My knowledge with databases is limited so was wondering if someone could have a look at my query and see what could be wrong. As far as I know the table names haven't changed and are unlikely to change in SQL and I think if they had changed then it wouldn't produce a report. When I try to run the statement without the 'innerjoin' it does seem to be giving correct information but that is useless to me because I need to know what teacher is teaching which group. If a school is running CMIS if you could try to run that CMIS statement and see what it produces for you both in the current dataset and an old data set and see if the information it provides is as you expect it to be. Remember that you will need to change the timetable.setid to correspond with how your dataset naming is set on CMIS e.g. 2008 or 08 etc. If anyone could advise on this as I have run out of things to try. Thanks
  22. Which script doesnt work? I have tried Duke5A, vbscript domain join and can confirm it does work. As long as you add it in as a first command using an unattend.xml it does work. I have also tried mysysprep2 and found that works also but prefer the vb script.

    Exchange 2007 SP3

Am I right in saying that SP3 only works if you have 2008 R2 installed?
  24. They should have enough RAM to run 7. one setup of laptops have 2gb and the others have 4gb. Doubt if memory is the problem.
  25. Did anyone find anyway to solve this. As we seem to be having the same problem described above. We have a bare bone image on a new WDS server we created. It runs on Server 2008 R2 so has the extra features of WDS such as driver injection but when we boot via PXE and choose the image, it begins the progress bar but then just says windows is loading files and just hangs there. It only seems to be with 2 specific laptops which have a CLEVO motherboard, other desktops and laptops seem to be fine. Like the OP we have injected the proper network and chipset drivers into the boot image. There wasn't a BIOS update needed for these laptops. Whats odd when it boots up WDS it tries to load x64 WDS. We have WDS on a x64 server,is this why it is happening?
