We purchased a learnpad and had a Toshiba tablet on trial. Had the learnpad software on both. Much preferred the Toshiba. faster and didn't drop our wireless half as often as the learnpad did. I still can't get the network share to work on either of them, but think its something I'm missing rather than anything to do with either the hardware or software (connection refused) General consensus from the teachers was that they like being able to restrict the profiles for the children to use. Have a few die hard apple users that think tablets start and stop with ipads so will be interesting to see how their attitudes may/may-not change. Have you added any apps from play to the activities ? The HT liked the fact no credit card need for "play" lol

I must be missing something simple but I can't get my learnpad (just the one, and a toshiba on trial) to connect to the network share I've set up on our server. is there an idiot guide that this idiot can use please?

How long have you been working in IT? 15 years Is this your first, second, third, etc career? What other jobs / roles have you done previously? Not really had what I'd call a career before. Left school and ended up working in a bank for a few years, loading tape into "state of the art (or should that be ark!)" computers. Loads of part time jobs while my boys were little/at school. Never really knew what I wanted to do when I grew up and as I haven't grown up yet....... Ended up in IT after a European funded scheme to get women back to work after work break to raise children (their words not mine!), I ended up with a NVQ in ICT. How many interviews did it take to get your first job in IT? 1. think my honesty shocked them! I knew very little about IT and told the network manager who was interviewing me that he had to ask me what a LAN was as it was the only bit of techie talk I knew!!!! Once he'd stopped laughing I think he realized I'd be honest about my abilities and was and still am willing to learn. Have you ever felt that being female is a help or a hindrance to gaining a job in IT? Yes and no. Back in the day it was a case of spot the techie, they were the ones that had their keys on their waistband and Im afraid I was a little too loud for most of them. (I am pretty loud but its just something to hide behind!) IT was a male stronghold but the world has changed thankfully. I think there are still some people that are shocked to find a woman doing the jobs that they expect to be geared towards men, but I think thats more of a generation thing. for example my father in law knows that I work in IT but was surprised to find me installing a projector, he thought I just "typed a bit" I don't think being a woman is a hindrance but I am beginning to wonder if being an older woman in IT is going to cause me issues. Not my abilities but other peoples perceptions. If you were considering IT (or other engineering / programming careers) whilst at school what support did you receive? When i was at school there wasn't any computers (yep Im that old!!) I left school just before I was 16 and the closest thing my school offered to anything technical for girls was an electric typewriter. sorry if I've waffled on a bit (no comments about my age ;p) Im still learning, I still enjoy what I do and I hope I'm still able to support my schools.

is this the message your getting? "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item".

We have Ruckus, not had any issues in 2 years of use. Easy admin. Looked at other suppliers but found Ruckus the best value at the time. Would choose them again having used other choices at different schools.

In the past couple of years I've purchased 20 pcs from them. 16 for a ks1 suite, 4 to try out in ks2. The 16 I got first are quite noisy , the fan seems to dislodge but is easily fixed. Haven't had very many issues with the actual hardware, a couple of power switches have been stick but that's it (rapidly touches wood!) The latest 4 seem to be a better build quality, they seem more solid if you get meaning. Any issues I have had have been sorted pretty quickly by their support team. I haven't had to call them out but email support seems quite fast and helpful. If I'd had more money in the budget I probably wouldn't have gone with them as I wouldn't have even thought to look down that avenue but that's more to do with my issues regarding unknown suppliers. But we had/have a very tight budget and were able to get the spec we wanted with the warranty we wanted. hth

Easiest drive in to work for ages! Snowed last night but the roads are clear in my bit of Leicestershire. I finish at 12 today so hopefully will get home before any major snow hits.

This is Alf, the love of my life (don't tell the old man or children :$) Not the brightest or bravest of GSDs but he's loyal and makes me laugh

old Proxy returning to haunt me :(
Smee replied to Smee's topic in East Midlands Broadband Consortium (EMBC)
thx but been there and done that. Was the first thing I did but on reboot the client pcs still pick up the old proxys. Back in the day, when EMBC sent out an engineer (may have been a LEA tech) when the schools moved over to EMBC, a script was loaded to change the proxy by said LEA techie. I think thats the issue but can't find the script. -

Unfortunatley this particular school that Im having the proxy problem doesn't have a server network. They run RM Schoolshare on the class pcs and have just to peer to peer admin machines. I found the proxy setting in the regedit, changed them then restarted the machines. Blimin' proxy came back again! As a temp measure the admin machines are now using Firefox which doesn't pick up the script that the embc engineer put on. Will keep trying to find a proper solution. :$ -
old Proxy returning to haunt me :(
Smee replied to Smee's topic in East Midlands Broadband Consortium (EMBC)
Thx Sparkeh. This particular school is very small. No network so to speak off (no server ). Just two office machines and half a dozen class pcs. They are all xp machines. They use to run through EMBC (hence posting here) but have moved over to schoolsbroadband. I've removed the proxy settings in IE and changed the home page but on restart it reverts back to embc settings. Theres an entry in the reg that I've even deleted under desperation but on restart that comes back. There must be a script somewhere running that brings them back (?) but I'm not sure where to check for it. -
Please accept my apoliges for my ignorance! Have removed old embc proxy settings from IE but on restart of the pc they are back again! Must be missing something basic as usual. :$ thanks for any help

embc changing dns to new provider
Smee replied to sparkeh's topic in East Midlands Broadband Consortium (EMBC)
I've just been contacted by a school who haven't sorted out their email :$ I think they just expected it to suddenly appear as if by magic even though they knew they wouldn't be using EMBC. Ho Hum -
Can I remove the "send to OneNote" in Office 2010 without having to visit every station on our network? thanks
