Oh on the how often it causes issues if you ever have to engage MS support for a product you best have followed best practice or at least be able to have a good technical reason for not doing so. I know this through many calls with prem and mis configured DCs/ Exchange / SQL and MIM installs to name but a few. Follow the best practice then at lest you have that to put in the back of your trousers if anything goes wrong.

Flow, teams integration and the fact that you can use the graph API and have powerBI ripple over it with no real work makes a useful HD and automation platform. Love the graph API almost as much as >_ better when I can use them together!

As mentioned in this post Sharepoint makes a good HD and I stumbled on the above but equally you could build one yourself if you had the time or people to get the dev done. Flow is your friend here to automate some of the everyday tasks like account creation as it could just be built off a ticket, that said I am an identity and access control man (one of my sins) so I can see this as a guest/ contractor or external account solution but I would not be saying use your HD for your staff and student account life cycle solution (there are much better solutions). You could use your HD to do your Teams creation or indeed your SP site creation and automate all that with Flow... Password reset I would say look at SSPR built into azure or what your cloudy based solution is, if you can. Again more thinking of identity management here and a HD don't bring you any way to be certain of who is requesting the reset (if you see what I am saying, not something you have/ know...) - - - Updated - - - Any how I could go on and on.... And on as its a bit of a passion but thats a start for a though exercise. Oh and Flow is not just bound to MS applications.

Yeah that will need sorting and the sync server don't need to be on your DC's.

Licenseing aside for now, are you syncing your users to O365? I cannot determine from what you have said.

So those records go on the student record system teams is not a student record system from what I know. There has been some inroads in to governance (I have just been reading) and is probably worth a review thing is as I have just noted its not your primary student record system. We use it to run projects in IT Services but the output is not kept in the team its move to our service catalogue.

So when a class/ department or project that leverages a team dispands you are suggesting that there is no life cycle management for it? We run teams and are clear that after the team has dispanded then any output needs transfering to our permanent record store(s) and the team is then deleted as it would be a GDPR/ information assurance nightmare is how the information assurance department put it. I am not suggesting that your IAS departments would have the same views if you could develop a solution around every minute detail of what comes with running long lived unmanaged teams.

Three tips on teams:- Make sure you have outlined what data is allowed to be stored in a team space, this should be stright forward as you can use your data classification policy to inform your teams policy. (nothing with any degree of sensitivity in a team) Life cycle management is an absolute must, make sure that teams that are no longer relevant or required are cleaned up and those that are have at least two owners and anything else that you are going to require as a minimum for the team to stay compliant. Scripts and the REST API are your friends here. Make sure that you are clear that teams are not a permanent record store.

Can you not just set it up as a schedule task and select the trigger At log on?
