Hi All, I have had a linux box sat in the corner of of server room for about 5 years happily chugging away as our SMTP server. Last week I noticed that I wasn't getting any emails from my backups and our finance software was sending emails to staff. It turns out that the power supply on the linux box has packed in and I don't have a spare to replace it. Is there a way I can use a public SMTP server for this? Is this what other people do? Or is there a quick way i can set up a new SMTP for this purpose? Thanks

Hi All, I am currently creating a document to cover myself if the backups fail in the future! I am proposing to try to restore certain random files at set intervals, as I do now, but document it as well so i can prove that i did it. This is no problem but I want to be able to also to test our bare metal backups of our Server 2008 R2 servers. This causes problems as the Hard Drive needs to be as big as the Hard Drive on the server. Could I buy a massive drive and try the restore on a regular PC, has anyone done this? Thanks Reg

Sorry, sorted it now. UAC was not disabled on the master image (Doh!)

I wish I didn't have so many holidays -as I finish today for most of the summer BUT I still have not finished my final new image to roll out via fog to our ICt Suites. I can't turn of UAC on my images as Chrome always moans about UAC for a student even though UAC is turned off by the local Admin. Can someone suggest what is going wrong? Thanks

That's what we use. Apple configurator on a standard iMac. Free from the mac app store. No over the air support though.

We have just purchased an apple TV for each department and are in the process of deploying them. We have had one fail already when deployed. It was working fine for about two hours then it just wouldn't display a thing and its little light just blinks constantly. Secondly does anybody else find Apple TV really laggy? Playing film clips from an ipad can jerk and be out of sync and when flipping between apps, sometimes the old app is still on the screen for some time. We have a pretty good wireless setup here (Ruckus) so I'm pretty sure that's not to blame. Anybody else experiencing this?

We are looking at ways of installing a projector in a DT workroom but are worried about the dust affecting it. Does anyone know if there are certain projectors that are fine in this atmosphere or of a special dust cage to go round a conventional projector? Thanks

I'm wating feedback from users still but this does seem to have occurred after the last lot of Windows updates went onto our servers. I rebooted them all last night to see if that finishes off any updates that needed a reboot for good measure.

The gpo that sets the users profiles has no settings for staff so I may have a play round with that.

All seems fine with policies applying!

Hi All, We have a weird one here, some staff, but not all (at least i don't think all), are having an issue with their roaming profile. They log on do some changes, log off, log back on and all those changes are forgotten. For example they have to reinput their details in outlook, google chrome always starts with the log in window etc. Can anyone suggest what we can do to investigate what is going on? Thanks

Yes SQL 2012 standard. I still don't know if our EES covers SQL cals though.

I'm about to buy SQL 2012 for our sims server but I don't know if we need to buy the extra expensive no cals required version! We currently have the MS EES agreement but I can't find out if that includes SQL cals. Does anyone know if it does? Thanks

We actually have one learnpad and I do like the QR code scanning tool, I didn't know you could map drives with them!

I do like the look of WebDAV but I'll need to stress that not all apps will allow saving of documents with WebDAV to the powers that be.

Hi All, I am currently strategizing (nice word) and one of my many documents I am working on is iPads/tablets for staff and/or students in a secondary school. As I'm sure nearly every school will face this at some point, I don't mean of getting them, I mean of having to talk to the SMT about it. Anyway I have a SWOT analysis so far for iPads for Staff (iPad is going to be the only option for staff) Strengths Portability Instant access Lots of free apps iPad is market leader Weaknesses Won’t integrate with users documents and shared resources Won’t run software on the network Added licensing complexities No Flash support – Some sites currently rely on Flash e.g. mymaths , some moodle add ons Opportunities Access to a wide range of subject specific Apps Off site possibilities (trips) Personal CPD usages Collaboration possibilities Different pedagogical approaches. Threats Security Desirable item for theft Limited lifespan of device? Other tablets could emerge So has anyone else already created something similar or have anything they could add to my feeble lists? I will be doing one for students later..

Thanks guys, I do tend to flip between powerpoint and Prezi myself and we have photostory on all our computers. I just wondered if we were missing out on some new software that is easy to use, for the teacher, but wowed the audience (wowed looks weird when typed out!)

Every year I get the same question from the same member of staff... "What shall I use to make a slideshow for all the year 11 students who are leaving soon? Whenever I use moviemaker it goes wrong!" It goes wrong because she brings the project into school but leaves all the media she has linked at home - every year. Does anyone know of any exciting tools out there that could be used to make an interesting slideshow/display to play to all the leavers to make them cry, as they do every year? Thanks

I have meddled with creator owner with disappointing results!

We currently have an area where students can save to "The student save area" This has always been a temporary area where students save to, then the teacher gets the work and deletes it. Well it was but it seems to be a bit more permanent now. The problem is at the moment as students have rights to save stuff there they also have the right to delete it and others work. Is there a creative way of using file permissions so that users cannot delete each others work but can their own? Thanks

Getting rid of the library doesn't sound like the best planning on the world!

Restoring 2008 R2 needs to have drive size at least the same size if not bigger so I guess we could restore to a pc at a push!
