@penfold I have been reading your threads on sims intergration with interest. I appreciate that you are doing a lot of work and research on this and if/when you do manage to intergrate maybe I would be able to look at your paid services.

@bossman I think most staff are already cynical about any VLE, with most just seeing it as either an extra burden or just a "fancy website". Pray do tell more about the sims webparts. Is that a capita provided tool? I am also hearing about the capita learning gateway, perhaps this could be another solution.

I'm slightly in the dark about what parents need to access by September 2010. Can they access this at the monet through uniservity?

I have a meeting on Tuesday with my SMT to try to show that moodle would be a good alternative to our LA provided uniservity. Our LA provided uniservity for us last September and so far it has virtually nothing on it. I believe (my opinion) that the staff just find it a bit too hard to use. I have given some training to the staff on two occasions but nothing has really progressed since then. I have a test moodle set up that links into a mahara server that I am going to show to the SMT. One question that has been raised in advance is that uniservity will be able to link into SIMS so that parents from home will be able to view their child's reports online. I don't have a comeback for that one as I don't believe that is possible with moodle. Maybe a fudge would be to use moodle as our VLE and just set a link to the uniservity so parents could see those reports? I don't want to be seen as someone being negative about one VLE over another I just want the chosen one to be a success. I could have just gone with the uniservity choice and sat back. Is anyone else in the same situation? Thanks

Fixed it. A couple of things were not working so alarm bells started ring. Anyway it was just bthat the date was wrong on the macine by about 3 years! Fixed that and everything started working!

I couldn't find the mysqld package with apt-get? I wouldn't want to compile anything as it would end up broken so no! I'm still installing moodle on it now so i will try with the moodle user shortly. thanks

Hi All, I'm just installing moodle again (yet again) and I have installed in on a fresh install of ubuntu server 8.04. I'm following instructions from moodle.org that I have used many times before. I thought I would try to log into phpmyadmin on the server, so I duly installed it with apt-get. However once installed I cannot log on to it with my root user? Do I have to create a user to log on? Sorry i think I must have missed something obvious?

I was inspired by a the talk of VLEs at the edugeek conference so I though I would drag out my moodle test box and see if i could get mahara up and running on it as well. I managed to get it working but only by playing around with the /etc/apache2/sites-available/default NameVirtualHost * ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost DocumentRoot /var/www/moodle Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny allow from all If I have /var/www/moodle then my moodle works fine and I cannot get to mahara If I take away the moodle so it just says /var/www then i can get to both sites but the moodle is rendered all wrong. Do i need to add another virtualhost entry to the bottom of this file? Thanks

Thanks to everyone who was involved in setting up the conference. It was the best I have been to. There was no hard sell unlike other conferences i have been to *COUGH* RM *COUGH* I think the odds on not winning a raffle prize were greater than the odds of winning one!

I have set up a wiki server on a mac server and I had it working all internally but then I needed to extend it to external use as well. So I have a domain name spare and I changed the mac server to recognise that. Now it all works from outside but not from inside. i know this is because when the use types in the domain name eg. Wiki.com from inside the school it goes off looking for the public IP and gets lost. What do i have to set up inside the school so users can access the site? Do I have to add a record somewhere within my DNS?

@Ric. Is this a default setup or did you need to tweak anything?

I don't mean what to use. Our kiddie winks will be using imovie as it is just basic editing they want. What I am trying to work out is how can a group of 20 go in and edit on a regular basis as imovie doesn't seem to store footage on a network drive but on the local drive. What would be the best way to set this up? Should I give the users access to the HD of the macs so they can save directly to them or do you do it a different way? A bit stuck on how to do it! Thanks

I fired up terminal and typed the above. My domain is correct but the computer account is not!! When I go to sys prefs/sharing I see that the computer name is iMac-u40-011 but below that it says "computers can access this computer by going to iMac-u40-70.local" And at the terminal it gives that name too. Could this be the problem?

Thanks Geoff, The document I had told me to chown -R www-data.www-data /var/www/moodledata. You soretd that out for me.
