I have set up my Macs to authenticate against AD using Directory utility and to pick up extra settings from the mac server using open directory. My settings to the client from the mac server work as I have added a welcome message to the log in box. i can then log in to the mac with an Ad user BUt then the log on box disappears and the just a beach ball of death! Can anyone suggest where I may be going wrong? thanks

Er, Vanilla XP with Server 2008.

Complicated title, sorry! We switched to Office 2007 at last over the summer. One problem that seems to be popping up in ICT lessons is that when a user prints two pages from a document side by side on a a piece of A4 some of the items from the page on the right hand side decide to move across on to the left hand page! Has anyone lese seen this? Thanks

Looking further into this it does appear that the mappings are being created. If I try to map a drive to for example r: that it is already mapped! It just isn't appearing in "My Computer" Can anyone figure that one out? thanks

Just off topic a bit, but can you map drives with kix that are hidden in "my computer"?

Hi All I have a kixtart script that logs my resources drive like so... ;########## NETWORK DRIVES USE R: "\\PRENTON2\RESOURCES" USE P: "\\PRENTON2\NETSOFT" My problem is that they sometimes do not map ish. What i mean is that they usually do but now and again they don't! Everything else in the script runs. If I then go to map the R: drive manually it actually shows that I can't use the r: drive as it's already mapped! Has anyone else had this problem or could they suggest an alternative way to map this drive? Thanks

Well I seem to be bucking the trend then. My system is set up with full in permissions and then limited in shares. Anyone think I need to swap this around?

I would have though that too! Both the system and the students group have full access to the folder? Could it be permissions on the share?

Hi All, I happily added an adm file to my Server 2008 domain group policies to redirect users favorites and cookies. I have pointed their faves to within the home drive e.g. h:\favorites and I did the same for cookies e.g. h:\cookies. My problem is that when the users log off they get an error along the lines of "You do not have permission to save cookies\index.dat" Can someone suggest where I might need to change permissions to fix this? I am struggling to remove kido/conficker from my network at the moment. I have a tool from mcaffee which scans your network to let you know which machines are infected. Bizarrly it only showed three machines whereas Kaspersky is telling me that every machine has an infection (perhaps it isn't a full infection?) Anyway when i ran the scanner I found two of the three machines and ran a kido removal tool. They are now showing up as clean on the scanner. My problem is with the third which is showing as a laptop (Old naming convention we used to have). I would like to block it from the network via dhcp so it won't connect to my network. Hopefully then the owner will show up complaining and then I can zap it and them! So I'm looking at dhcp and scratching my head? Can someone help? Thanks

Strange one this! I am knocking up a spreadsheet of my year 7 students to import in to a web based exam site. I have set up a formula to generate a random number as the users passwords. I have also changed the formatting of the date e.g. changed from 31 July 1997 to 31/07/1997 Anyway neither settings work. The formula just sits in the cell without actually showing the result and the formatted cell still shows the old format. I have found a part fix on google where it suggested pressing F2 then F9 and return. This does update the cell but I have 400 cells to do and I'm worried that it might happen to the staff or students as well so I'm preparing for the storm. Any ideas?

Sorry to bring this thread back to life, but can anyone tell me how I could hide a non system drive? I have the P: drive mapped to server installed apps and it is then mapped to the users so they can access them. i now want to hide the P: drive so users don't go wandring around it, even though they can't write to it.

I am still coming to terms with my new vanilla network (Post CC3) and I have noticed that some websites will not run flash even though it is installed. I can run the site no problem logged on as an admin but not as a standard user. eg. http://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/flash/unmuddle_the_meals_intro.swf will run fine for me but a standard user just gets a blank page. Do I need to give users permissions to certain parts of the c: drive maybe? thanks

Hmm, I need to merge a registry fragment at logon but my users do ot have permission to run scripts so it gets denied? Is there a way to authenticate somehow just for a script?

I am in the process of redirecting users favorites and cookies and the adm I have suggests using %userprofile%/favorites but I have a mandatory profile so I want to put the users favorites in their "my docs" I tried %userfiles% but I know that isn't right. Can anyone help? Thanks

Could you explain more what the universal extractor is? I fancy putting scratch on a public drive but not sure how to extract! Thanks

This doesn't seem to have been asked for a while so I'll ask now I'm about to start making a new image for my windows XP machines, what software do you think I have to have on the image. I don't mean office, google maps etc. I mean stuff like realplayer, codecs etc. I always seem to miss something out like a DVD codec or something so I'm trying to knock up a list so I can run through it every time I create a new image. Ta

At the moment I do have an excel spreadsheet that creates shares etc but I'd quite like to find a tool to do this especially if it could be set up to create single users simply, as I am a lazy man. Hi All, I'm currently off with Flu (Boo) but I have just logged on for a quick email check and facebook fix. While I was logged on to my school email I noticed a message to all staff that the new school email system is having problems. Now nobody can fix it while I'm off as I'm the only IT support. Now when I left on friday I noticed that when a user opened the site http://www.outlook.com that the page did not display until they clicked refresh. Now this is IE 7 on a new vanilla server 2008 set up. Could it be a problem with the site being https? Could it be IE7 anti phishing settings? Or something else? Has anybody else had this problem. If anybody has an idea I can go back into work once I'm better armed with some ideas ready for the flack when it hits!

Ok I'll explain how it was set up (by a third party) before the new domain was installed. The clients were connected to open directory for locking down their shortcuts to apps and mapping their home drives etc. They were also connected to my domain. Both done with directory services. The DNS service is installed on the mac server and when I look at zones it has prentonhigh.internal as a primary zone which I have change (correctly or incorrectly to prentonhigh.local) and two reverse zones. Do I not need this then? Could DNS be set from the windows domain somewhere? I need the active directory integration as the school is now used to that and will not want to go backwards!

Would it be best if I removed DNS completely from my mac server and then start again?
