So do you guys just have something like VMWare running on a server with images running from that? I like the sound of running Sophos off a virtual server DOSBOX

We have 2 admin and 2 curric domain controllers which we are combining into one domain and 300 ish workstations. I was just wondering if I was missing the boat by having nothing virtual at the moment!

Hurrah! It's April so I should get some money soon to replace our CC3 network with something else. While I'm at the planning stage I am concious that I know nothing about virtualization on the server side! I run virtual machines for testing workstations and linux installs etc but never thought about the server side. Can anyone suggest where virtualization may be something to think about when setting up a new network? Thanks

Too late now. I trained them last Friday. think the staff would prefer me to train them than a "face" from uniservity. I wasn't going to go in there and say "don't even bother this is a load of rubbish". I trained them as well as I could on what I knew and how best they could use it. I don't walk around the school mumbeling under my breath how cr@p uniservity is. I don't think it is that bad but I do think there are better products out there which would be better for our high school. I know that about a year from now nobody will be using uniservity in our school and I will have to find alternative which to honest will probably not be used either!

@Russ Can you post up after the event any exciting things you discovered? I'm trying my best to build up a head of steam about moodle to go to my SMT with to replace our uniservity! Thanks

I'd be interested in what you get for 55k too. I'm about to upgrade our network away from CC3 and I think I'll get about 25k max

If the post was aimed at me I'll reply. I'm not bothered if the LA, uniservity or my school read my post. I have already explained to my school that I don't believe that uniservity is the right product for us. The LA have provided us uniservity for free for two years so I have no complaints at all for them. They supply lots of things for us, some good some bad. As for uniservity, I hope they read everything that people say about them. Perhaps they will listen and change so that they can become more like a proper VLE. Also I don't remember being particulalry harsh about uniservity in my posts just being worried about having to try to "sell" it to the staff, which by the way went well.

I'll try plugging a macbook in to the server directly as I have always grabbed an image on to another external drive first.

I recently attended a four day course on mac server, the one thing I was particularly interested in was imaging macs as I wasn't sure at all. Anyway we didn't get to image as it would have taken too long in the course so we just read thru the chapter. So now back in real life i have been trying to use netboot with an image created with system image utility from an image I created with carbon copy cloner. Phew three thing to do one job. Anyway needless to say I'm failing. I have created the dmg with ccc then created a netinstall image with system image utility and then sent it to the mac with netboot. I boot the mac while holding down the N key, it shows me a globe and then goes to a grey screen with the apple and pinning wheel and never goes any further, ever. Argh Are there any easy ways to copy one mac to another as I now have a mac with nothing happening. Thanks

It's nor that I can't explain what there is and how it works, it's more about enthusing the staff in the virtues of uniservity! I'm suppossed to "Big it up" which is hard when you don't believe in the product.

I was asked a while ago if I could train the staff up on uniservity, how it works and what you can do with it. I, of course, totally forgot until being reminded yesterday and the training is tomorrow. : Anyway my main problem is how to convince staff how great uniservity is when I don't believe in it! I suppose I could show them how the wikis and blogs work and will probably take the whiole two hour session up. Has anyone any suggestions of other things I could show off about uniservity? Thanks

Are you running mas server anywhere? That has the ability to shutdown and start macs in the workgroup manager.

Wow, one of my favourite films! I saw "102 minutes that changed America" on the history channel the other day which is a documnetary of just footage from 9/11 with no commentary and it felt just like watching cloverfield.

I know this has been covered before but I want to ask a slightly different question! I'm actually on a mac server advanced course at the moment, not bad as I can't get windows training no matter how hard I try. Now I am on the course as nobody really has a clue on what to do with our mac suite of 30 macs and an x serve. At the moment the macs authenticate against active directory so the users just attach to their windows home directory. The xserve is currently just powering my usb powered snowman (don't ask) Anyway I am currently learning how to set up the system so I can control the users desktops etc through the server with workgroup manager. But this way I won't be able to use any of the mac servers huge amount of HD space for user files as you can't move users home directories. So can anyone suggest how they would set up their mac system in this scenario? PS we are moving away from CC3 in the summer so I'll have to re jig again.

Not quite right yet for me, probably me doing something wrong. I need the batch file to go through the h: drive and then find the folder "microsoft user data"... H:\Students\Work\User 13\13Auser\documents H:\Staff\Work\Ateacher\documents And then delete it! It could be in a different area on different users drives. I am trying to use edusweeo at the moment to automate this but i don't think it deletes folders? Thanks for th help so far!

I need to delete folders! It needs to search and find those folders and then delete them. I don't think that script would do that?

Hi All, Luckily for me I am on a training course all next week which leaves the school with no tech support as my workmate is off long term sick. Unluckily we are running low on server HD space so until my new drives arrive I need an emergency script to help me out. What i need is a script that will search through the users on the h: drive to look for folders with certain names e.g. "microsoft user data" which is created when a user logs on to a mac adding 20 meg to their folder, which they can do without once they log off agian for the short term! I have looked through the scripts already on here but I can't find one that will search through sub directories to find a particular folder and then delete it. Could somebody please help? Thanks

I went for IPADDRESS:/share/name /images/nfs/ nfs in the end. Worked for me! Thanks for all the help.

Quicker than me!

My problem there is that it is a nfs share and not a physical HD! Would that still work?
