are you editing using crontab -e ? (crontab -l to list) I appreciate that as a slackware user, your *nix skills are probably beyond mine, but I have no trouble with crontab on debian as root.

Well, I it here. I wouldn't use it on a live site (stigma from the earlier days, I believe security is much better now), so I switched to vBulletin which is the Rolls-Royce of bulletin boards to allow external access.

PHPBB3 supports AD out of the box. I have mine authenticating against it here.

Why use a cms at all? you can use the apache mod_userdir extension mod_userdir - Apache HTTP Server create accounts on the lamp box, let them ssh into their home folder, place the html and BAM - visit http://yourserver/~username/ you still need to find a wysiwyg editor for the substitute ICT teachers, but there are a fair few around. could even use something like Open Source Cross-Browser WYSIWYG Editor although you'd have to build a small framework around it. set the username and password for the proxy in the proxy address? If you have a few machines, I suggest using or setting up a debian 4 server / vm (or using a current lamp one) to run apt-cacher. You then point all the apt configs to the local server, it fetches the updates on the first call and holds them for the other 100 machines that ask for it. Auto-expires superceded packages as well. Works much better than having to download and maintain a full repository mirror. On server: sudo aptitude install apt-cacher

It's looking likely I'll be going for a: DELL 4210 42U Includes Doors, Side Panels, Ground Ship Packing and Service despite liking the look of the HP unit, I can get this a bit cheaper and no qualms regarding the equipment going in with the dell type rails specced on the gear. Anyone got these that can say anything about them?

I'm looking to buy a rack with a bunch of rack mount stuff (dell mostleh) Ceiling is very tall and want expansion possibility so thought I'd go 42U, despite it being overkill at this stage -> only have about 11U worth of kit to go in it and the hp switches are staying in another rack in another room. I'm moving the servers over to rackmounts now to save on space and keep things nice and accessible. What rack would you recommend - I hear the dell ones are quite expensive - any reason for it? Seen them from £500 and up (non dell), budgeted for ~600 but that's much lower than dell price I think. Air con is in the old comms room, new comms room has no air con, but has a very tall ceiling (edwardian building that used to be a library, so v.v.tall) with 2 vents towards top (one through wall, other out window) so I think it should be ok for cooling as we move further from the 2 weeks of summer this year. May put an air con unit in there later on, so perforated rather than sealed in my mind. Suggestions? Comments?

I run an open source zimbra server and have a blackberry pearl - my emails are pushed to my phone by my network provider by connecting through pop3. I can send from the handset as well. I assume the other method works without the network provider subscription service, but it's handy because you can configure multiuple mailboxes to be pushed to the handset and such feature is subscription anyway. Can also delete messages on handset, server or both from the phone. Whats the advantage?

Same works for open office files which are just archives of the data in open formats - ie: all your images are stored in folders as the .jpg .png or whatever.

can't you use secure ftp? [option] or sort out webdav on a lamp box which accesses your ntfs fileshares and auths against your AD?

Done some of the hard stuff like the dancing and Cinema room, MLS Invoice PDF output and automatic saving so the Michaelmas invoices could be generated, timetabling for the coming year, alterations to synopses of work etc, but too much left! Got a new lab, rack and server(s) order to pick quotes on, make, receive and finally install. Two new networks to build on two other sites, Broadband upgrade for here and new orders for the remote sites. Migration of current network & domain onto the new hardware when it arrives so that the old hardware can be re-deployed to the remote sites. New science lab has been pushed back and work prob won't start until september. Swap machines in labs 1 and 2, deploy lab 1 machines around classrooms, deploy new machines in lab 2. Meet with the lighting and electricians to cover the spec for the stage lighting. Currently working on the MLS - completed the modifications needed to get the invoices out, upgraded all the userdata sections, but I've got to get the testing system upgraded and operational for 2nd week back, teacher lesson planning module done ASAP, all the new accounts setup plus sorting out the Moodle users and documenting user guides. I would recommend getting us much as possible running on the base so option 1. There's an overhead running VMs and that avoids some of it and gives you a more stable base. Can you downgrade to 2000 if the weather software supports it to get more mileage? If you get a lot of power cuts maybe a UPS?
