You may be right in that it is not a failed piece of hardware, there are signs though that it might be certain hardware not performing as expected with 2012. I've read some stuff on-line where a guy has tried several software fixes and still the problem remains. TBH it's just grasping at straws, but with the file server failing ever hour we need something to grasp onto as waiting for MS to fix the problem is not going to cut any ice with SLT.

Latest news is that this did not fix the problem as we have just lost the fileserver again. I'll keep you posted on where we go from here. I guess knowing what doesn't work could be useful information too?

Sorry, as I said I'm not part of the technical team so don't have access to that info. But given the fact that we have updated the firmwear in everything I think this is a moot point as we have a mix of switches / servers covering a wide range of dates / models.

I'm not involved in the technical side here, but I thought I'd post this as we seem to be getting somewhere! We've had the same problem here for nearly two weeks now, although today it seems we might have some progress. We had all the symptoms described in previous posts and ended up with numerous external agencies involved at considerable cost. The latest thing we have done is to update all firmware on the switches / NICs / servers - all of which are HP. We are currently on half-term so we have been running scripts to simulate thousands of read / writes per hour to the file server; prior to today we have cause the system to fail within an hour or so, today the system is still running 10 hours after the last restart. Not saying it's fixed, but it looks a lot healthier than it did yesterday. We're running 2012R2.

Oh how I wish that was true! As simple Data Managers we report to teachers, not the other way around. I empathise with the OP, I know there are shed-loads of spreadsheets clogging up our network and holding useful information that if all put in one place would enhance the information I could provide. But this is departmental data and must remain in their silo, not mine

Yes, I've seen Capita SLG training but this has been aimed at the install / configuration rather than use of SLG. I want to be able to understand what it does, what are it's limitations and how I can use it beyond the VLE we bought it for. For instance, this app sounds good, but what training do I need to make sure the app will work with our setup? I've only been here (i.e. working in education) for 18 months, and I was not around when the original decision was made to go with SLG. Normally it would be during that decision making process that I would answer a lot of the questions I have and learn a lot about the system. Nobody here has a clue what can be done with it, and I'm pretty sure we have not been maintaining it as we should. So, would the Capita SLG Technical training benefit me?

I'd like to use SLG well; we have it and we pay for it but due to a lack of knowledge we don't use it. I've tried finding training, but so far have been unsucessful. Does anyone reading this know of any SLG specific training?

In the past I've installed head units in glove boxes and under parcel shelves for security purposes, leaving the original "unappealing" radio in place, albeit dead. There should be no reason why you cannot set up both to run (but not at the same time) using a bit of wiring, switching and ingenuity. One of the biggest bugbears I found was controlling the thing. Reaching across to the glove box to turn up the volume was OK in the Mini, but not achievable in a Discovery! If you want to play tapes get an old Walkman and use a phono lead to feed to your new headset.

We don't do rock in e-Stanglia; mostly it is un-consolidated glacial material (it is not stuck tightly together) is very easily eroded hence the rapid rate of retreat of the coastline of this region. Thanks for the reply @tombry Our teachers are asking for it; so I'm determined not to disappoint. Too many of our current report cards get "lost". I guess it is a smaller issue here as we tend to only have a half a dozen on report at any one time, a teacher would be very unlucky to get two in a class. We use Lesson Monitor, so we have the registers open in each class anyway, and from there a right click brings up the report card. The nightly signing of the report card is an issue here too; at the moment we are planning that the card is printed every evening - not sure this is going to work though. In the longer term I hope to get something sorted out with SLG / Website to provide a parental overview.

We're looking at introducing SIMS e-report cards and I have a few questions regarding how others use them:- 1 - As far as I can tell, the targets are only set as a tick box and comment; given that some teachers will not complete the report card how do you tell the difference between an empty tick box meaning "pupil did not comply" and an empty tick box meaning "teacher did not complete"? 2 - In anticipation of the above, has anyone used "doubling up" on the targets; that is to say providing two targets, one positive and one negative so at least one must be ticked if the teacher has completed the report card? 3 - In anticipation of both 1 & 2 - what "incentives" are used to get teachers to complete the report cards?
