Why does it need to be secretive? If all customers know, the data is out there. I'm saying that in the UK is fine publicly, not sure where the confusion is? I'm saying that the buyer individually should know.

I agree @matt40k @Bromcom-PR In the UK is acceptable under DPA, although I would want to know where backups are too, not just a random signed agreement. A customer should know themselves, it is their responsibility too not just suppliers in telling them. Potentially, yes a school should be able to visit the site.

I can't help it, I can't lurk any more on this thread... It has given me much amusement however! I had a long debate with @penfold_99 about the term SoSaaS, we couldn't agree. Much like my bugbear about the term cloud and the misuse of it, Software as a Service seems to be bounded about without a full understanding of the meaning too. It might be nice to have a definitive definition, because my understanding is that SaaS is software you use you do not manage. So Microsoft when they brought out 365 apps, Word became a Software as a Service you use then switch off. You don't install, update, troubleshoot and fix, that is handled elsewhere. Just as you would with a SaaS MIS. Ok you then have the grey area with the storage, but you could argue this is a service you are paying for too (like OneDrive). Given that, does SoSaaS actually exist (I personally don't like the term, but as @vikpaw will testify that is probably because I didn't think of it!). I would argue not, because any software could be used as SaaS under that definition. To Cloud, my interpretation has always been that Cloudy applications are ones that are hosted on several disparate and distributed servers, like Google servers and services are. Ones simply presented via a web browser and hosted on a server not on site does not make it cloud(y). Interested in the discussions on APIs and charges, so to @Bromcom-PR I would ask do you charge for your API, in any form (write back included), and do you charge for facilities to test the integration against, for example a test environment. Do you charge a licence fee for non-school 'customers'. It's no secret Capita do make a charge both for partnership and for writeback (This is not a dig at all @PhilNeal it is a public fact these days, but because SIMS is being compared against I wanted to use that as a basis for comparison), so I am wondering your thoughts and position on this? It is just we were talking about integration and that and then suddenly got talking on MIS migration. I thought it might be worth mentioning here as is on topic, however it will be a part of the MIS Question Tim session!

Agree with these points. What were um you using Moodle for before, and what are you trying to achieve with it now? It is certainly an odd move unless you are purely using it as a hosting and basic website.

Coulda Woulda Shoulda... It should only ask for but doesn't guarantee a cheap app won't be poorly built. So you are back into the old territory of having an MIS validate every integration, which of course there is a cost for (so third parties loosing out), then there is an overhead with constantly changing and managing the API to suit all, likely passed back to the third party, and then there will inevitably be losers when things need to be changed to balance performance and availability. Again, it can and even would ENCOURAGE good behaviour... doesn't mean it will enforce it. As an MIS supplier my first and foremost priority is to provide a good service to my customers with my software. If too you have read that there is a changing ideal in the way providers work their API/integration model, then the procedures you have described do not fit, or mean a waking great loss for the MIS company if not passing costs onto third parties (which is the current model with a few supplier, and is crippling to some thrid parties and is actively discouraging innovation and choice in the market... not my opinion but the opinion of several I spoke too at BETT). Is good to hear different arguments on this topic, exactly what I was looking for!

What?! Yes it is if my suggested scenario is put into effect. I could write one that could flood Internet traffic effectively a ddos. sure I might think I need it for my own uses and having such a badly writen real time data transfer might look good, but how can that be the MIS fault? There has to be control from the MIS side for all involved, especially if it is envisioned that an API is to be open to all. I'm not saying that design consideration should be put in to make the MIS resilient but there needs to be check in place.

All the classics: Nokia 3210 (Snake!) NES with Elite... The greatest game ever Hang on no... mega man. Atari Jaguar, I must have been the only owner... but it did come with Alien vs Predator (the very first game, and by far and out the best ever, maybe not in today's graphics but in playability and story it was awesome!) Sega Master System... With original Sonic A Palm PDA that was shocking, especially when you wanted to try and put a 200 quid sat nav on it that had no search function! My dad has an intellevision game system.from the 80s. Still works, just, If you hit it every 30 seconds... and some classic games there too!

There is also the issue of how do you control how much x third party thrashes the server or services if tapping directly into the database, regardless of they are core tables or not. What if x third party wants to poll every 10 seconds for the entire database which in a new cloud installation could be for an entire LA so 100000 kids full records...

I'm talking MIS providers charging for their API or inbuilt interface. I think if you look around you will find there is no charge for many a provider now. Yes you have all the other charges in terms of development etc, but not paying just for the privilege... Don't worry this is part of my questioning to put to MIS suppliers next month
