Maybe I'm wrong but isn't that a £500 "executive road warrior" device (or do you do a GREAT deal on them ) @OP Things change fast - I bought 9 Samsung NB150s before the holidays and they took Win7 Pro fine. I don't think drivers are the issue - get a few quotes from the suppliers in and then just check on that manufacturers website to make sure they are available (Which AFAICT they all are nowadays ) You should be able to get them in range of £200 to £250 (plus cost of Win Starter to Win7 Pro upgrade) Just check detail of spec to make sure that they don't do the ASUS trick last year of only having 1 headphone/mic socket - great job boys I hope the 20p hardware saving was worthwhile for you regards Simon

How's about using cheap (<£100 smartphones) instead of cameras in class? They come with cameras and wi-fi and apps to do things with the pictures. The pics can be uploaded direct to a school twitter account for show and tell (v easy to help maintain a dynamic website ) Or just uploaded to a school dropbox account (dropbox priviacy issues permitting ) Or just have a simple SMB app to just copy and paste them to the school server. And then because you've got a "smart" device - it can be used for other applications/ideas as well regards Simon

Well, I thought it was just video's that were a bit awkward to use but I gave the Tab to a teacher to try out and the first thing they tried to access didn't work - we clicked on the empty box where the video image is normally displayed but it did nothing. She persuaded me to take my 'droid rose specs off and face reality - it might do flash but online educational web content can be complex that's been tested to work in IE6/7/8 but obviously not designed to work with other browser flavours You can't really expect a modern browser to deal with legacy type issues (such as embedded MPEG-1 videos) So verdict so far - a 'droid tablet has a much better success rate at dealing with online interactive content than an IPad (which is close to zero) but 100 * 0.1% is still a low figure Si

No - I'm OK with that I made a little form/php code (as a backup of the RSS feed) to just save some text to a file and then I added some code to read it back into my main app. Its just one of heads has managed to learn how to use email ( ) and he likes echoing his thoughts to the staff (not saying what the staff think of them ) using his blackberry Si

I'm using mmmmail.com to generate rss feeds from email as method of head's sending posting updates to my staff room noticeboard/calendar web page but the service (its free so can't complain) is iffy. Anyone got an easy method of retrieving subject lines (dont' need anything else) from an email address (pref a county hosted POP3 account)? regards Simon

All my schools use Espresso - especially in KS1 - Lancs got the price down to approx £3/pupil. Some of them use Educationcity as well (especially liked by TAs working in groups/one2one) regards Simon

I've started this thread to share what I've learnt so far in trying to do this There are issues with getting Android broswers to play back Espresso content held on local lan webserver. 1. Browser must support Adobe Flash - Default and Opera do but not Firefox 2. Browser must support accessing local Lan webserver - Default doesnt if proxy server set, Opera can. So currently, Opera can be used for both internet and intranet web sources and it works fine until you come to and mpeg video and you get a box thats says "saving plug-in content" and no video So you can use it for activites but not to watch videos easily -you can download it but thats not child friendly Alternatively, the wi-fi proxy settings can be disabled and the default browser(does it have a name?) can be used to access the Lan web server. The default browser handles the video content a BIT better in that if you click on the empty box, it brings up a dialog to select a player, but its still not child friendly enough. (I have Rockplayer installed to handle video playback) Of course, if the proxy setting for the default browser is not enabled, then it can't go out onto the internet and your then relying on Opera which unfortunately seems to want to render most sites in mobile format So at the moment, there doesn't seem to be a 100% solution to the problems but you can get to 90% success. Which is 100% better than an IPad Si Hopefully someone will come along and tell us how to get the last 10%

I haven't read the other answers but to clean this off one of my schools I had to disconnect EVERTHING from the lan and make sure all servers were clean On each machine, I ran the sophos root kit/conficker removal tool - if the machine had an infection i rebooted and ran it again and then did a scan with Malabytes malaware just ot be sure. Once I'd done this - i reconnected machine to network. All computers set to not autorun USB drives and all USB devices with memory in them e.g cameras as well as pens) were banned from school until I personally had checked them and then they were not allowed on school machines if they were taken home - they had to be handed back to me again for rescanning . It took a week - i did the classroom teacher machines first. Been clean for a year now Good Luck Si

not a real proble but practically everytime I install a printer - in printer properties it shows paper available=Letter but then when I go into all the device settings etc I can find no mention of Letter and everthing is set to A4. Why???? Si

@pantscat and dazzd88 Super - that's worked - I added the exclusion and then reserverd an unused address in the exclusion range for my new printer and power-cycled it - it picked up reserved address OK ( the naughty muggle clients will move out of space over the next 2 weeks ) Ah - I see where I've been going wrong - I've been drinking bovril and eating coffee flavoured chocolates!
