I don't mind if staff want to bring their own laptops in but I refuse to allow them onto the network and I remind them our insurance doesn't cover them. That generally discourages them enough.

I sort this problem using an automated configuration script. I have a proxy.pac file stored on an internally (not externally) accessible web server (if the script is available externally the proxy will always be used). When on the school network the settings in the .pac are used, when off site the file isn't available so no proxy settings are applied. We have a similar setup and experience a similar problem. For us it's always the certificate that gets lost so a quick reboot while hardwired sorts it. It also happens fairly rarely (~once a month) so I don't worry about it too much.

More widespread use of thread tagging would also help with searching for specific topics.

I second that, the Internet deserves a lot of things but certainly not that. Saying that we do teach kids how to make webpages in Publisher, but only to show them what a bad idea it is, and only once we've given them a grounding in HTML using Notepad. We then let them loose in Frontpage, which is not much better IMO. If I had my way they'd be using Vim

I'd say it really depends on what the game was and where it was downloaded from. If they were playing flash games in a lesson they should get a verbal slap from the teacher like they would for wasting time in a non-ICT using lesson. If however they downloaded a pirated copy of a game from a shady website and therefore have infringed on copyright (and by proxy caused the school to also) then I'd be more likely to agree with the punishment. There really isn't enough info in that short article to come to an informed opinion.

Took less than a day here (not including planning) when we moved the range over Easter.

Import duties and VAT kick in if the value is above £18 (unless it's a gift, then it's £28 IIRC). But as of 1/12/2008 the limit is being upped to £118, which is a much nicer figure for those of us who import a lot.

Suffolk is also 5, 6, 7, 8. So again 2 years of high school. And to update my earlier post, it's no longer being tried in Suffolk, it's suceeded. All middle schools in Haverhill and Lowestoft have been issued statutory closure notices and the rest of Suffolk's middle schools will receive them in 'due course'.
