Thanks for that guys. DNS is not running on the second DC. I'm at a bit of a quandary what to do next though. I'm wondering if I should just remove the DC features from that server and wipe it and go back to 2003 32 bit and rebuild. Or should I just go to "Configure Your Server" and select DNS server and follow the prompts? ETA: Both servers are set as Global Catalogs and have the box ticked in Active Directory Sites and Services.

When I took over this school the servers were in a bit of a mess. One was failing and the other had failed. When I got things back up and running there were all kinds of nasties in the DNS. I cleared out anything I thought shouldn't be there and brought in a second domain controller. It seems to be doing it's job ok but every so often there's an error in the event log. I had originally put it down to problems with Windows Server 2003 64 bit edition and a compatibility issue. But looking in the DNS I find entries for this DC in all areas where the other DC is. Only one of the servers handles DNS, so should all these entries for the second DC also be in the same place, or should the only entry be in the forward and reverse look up zones alongside all the other machines on the network? Ideally I'd like to introduce a new DC to see what gets added where, then decomission the 64 bit horror, but no funds or equipment are available to do this. TIA. G.

Just been on Ebay to check prices, the going rate for a bundle like this is around £100, so anything at or above that price. I'm not desperate to sell, so I'd probably keep if it it's worth less than £100.

This is an old problem that I've never manage to get resolved (see here) The server is a domain controller, running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 edition The problem is that every few minutes it would report this error in the event log: Event: 1054 Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (An unexpected network error occurred. ). Group Policy processing aborted. The server seems to be working ok - it's allowing logons and the Active Directory is syncing ok. A file dropped in the SYSVOL is replicated and visible on the other DC without any issues. I did a search and found something relating to the AMD Dual Core drivers. These reduced the errors down to just once every few hours, if not longer. I also had another server the same make and model (not a DC) with the same OS with the same problem, and installing this driver cured it completely on there. I'm wondering if it's an issue with the DNS. As I have only two servers, lets call them AA-SERVER (1.2.3.4) BB-SERVER (1.2.3.5) and if AA-SERVER is the main domain controller and BB-SERVER is the one with the issues, can anyone give me a quick runthrough to see if the settings in my DNS are correct. The network has had two server failures (both DCs) in the past and I'm wondering if this is part of the problem. All the entries for the old DCs are gone, but I'm concerned that there is a setting for BB-SERVER which is wrong. I was tempted to power the machine off over Easter, remove the HDD and install the 32 bit version with the same domain name and IP address and such but then there's the hassle or problems of whether I'd need to demote before I rebuild. TIA

I've been approached by the head of MFL about putting some software "on the system". The programs are made by a company called AVP and called Zehnspiele and Dixjeux, and dated from around 1998. Does anyone have any instructions for these programs? I've just got two folders with the files in, no CD's or documentation. Dropping the folders onto a network share and creating shortcuts to the EXE files doesn't work for the pupils.

We have an NEC VT575 projector here with a failed bulb that's been pushed beyond it's recommended lamp hours. We've replaced the bulb but the projector won't power on (the power light is amber - standby and the lamp light is red). The manual states: "When the lamp exceeds 2100* hours (up to 3100* hours in Eco mode) of service, the projector cannot turn on and the menu is not displayed. If this happens, press the HELP button on the remote control for ten seconds to reset the lamp clock back to zero. When the lamp time clock is reset to zero, the LAMP indicator goes out." All well and good but the remote doesn't have a HELP button! Any ideas folks?

These new modern diesels give out far less. Plus the cheap tax only applies to post 51 plate cars. So even if you have an ultra efficient old car you don't benefit. You'd be quite surprised. It's a light and nippy little beast, more powerful than an equivalent 1.2 petrol!
