  1. Hi all, I went to a Google event and their method of having a staff shared folder in Drive was to create a user called ‘Staff Share’ and share that Drive with all staff to use for resources etc. We use Office 365 and wondered if anyone has done something similar? It would also be great to be able to map this shared folder to user via GPO or similar. I’ve seen an open source tool online to map OneDrive via GPO but haven’t tested it yet. I am also aware of IAMCloud solution to this but would cost £1500 a year. Thanks!
  2. Hi all, I need to change some of the text colours for a student who has some visual impairments. The issue is our student profiles are mandatory and wont save anywhere after she logs out. What is a good way to do this? Thanks
  3. I'd really appreciate to see your start menu script. Also do you use standard folder redirection in group policy to manage the desktop folder? Do you do this for both staff and students?
  4. I want staff and students to have different desktops which I define what they see. They should have no ability to save on to the desktop.
  5. Hi all, In the process of migrating to Windows 10. Currently with Windows 7 we use a desktop folder redirection group policy to manage our staff and students desktop icons/shortcuts. The policy looks are two read-only folders on a file server to issue the icons/shortcuts. We also lock it down so users cannot save anything to their desktop. The trouble I have with this method is that if a devices network connection cuts out (user roaming between buildings, or device goes to sleep) the shortcuts disappear. The user needs to log out and back in to get the icons. What other methods are there to achieve a central desktop experience for on-site and when teacher roam at home. Thanks.
  6. He read his questions from a form, but did have knowledge of what he was talking about.
  7. Feedback from the meeting: Ok.. there was definitely no need to panic.. the meeting was scheduled for 30 minutes but lasted just over an hour. Questions included: What is your password policy and do you have a minimum requirement for password complexity? Do you allow USB storage devices and why do you? Are you mobile devices encrypted? Do you enforce pins on your mobile devices such as mobiles and ipads? Where is your data stored? Is it physically secure? Questions along those lines.. nothing tough that I couldn't answer. The gentleman definitely had recommendations for some of my answers and that was is, recommendations. All good!
  8. Hi all, I am in the process of migrating to Office 365 Exchange Online and want to enable the journaling feature as a way to retrieve emails if someone does something shady or needs an email from years ago. I understand you cannot use a journaling mailbox which is part of your 365 organisation. The end goal is to retire our on-site Exchange server so using an on-site mailbox isn't useful. What options are there to achieve this? Thanks
  9. It is a random visit and the DPO is managing the visit. Can't help but be anxious!
  10. Hi all, I've just been told by my COO that the Information Commissioner's Office is visiting on Monday and will probably want to speak to me about handling data protection. Is there anything I should know/say or prepare for? Thanks.
  11. Hi all... We are a large campus of 7 buildings and I have been asked to look into a system to be able to notify staff and possibly students of terror attacks if one was to occur on our site. The system needs to be discreet. I was thinking of a texting service. Has anyone done or seen anything similar?
  12. I'm a very new NM with only 5 years IT exp. I have never managed such a big project with approx 250 roaming staff profiles. We are looking to move to Windows 10 across the summer but not sure where to start. I think I can handle the OS deployment and GPOs but not sure how to plan for staff profiles. I hate roaming profiles and would like to get rid of them but how do you plan such a huge project to coordinate with staff/SLT from roaming to local/mandatory?
  13. My COO has asked me to suggest some new team structures. I have some ideas in mind but wondered what you guys have in place? We have a managed IT service provider but hoping to get rid of them to use that money for senior IT staff budgets. He has suggested we have a flat structure with peoples names to services so it is clear who is responsible for what and those services can be cared for by a single person who has those skill sets. Please advise on your thoughts.
  14. Hi all! Just wondering what you all use for Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware? We've had Symantec for a few years now (~£1800 for 999,999 seats) but the SEP Manager is awful. Also how do you deploy your AV? Thanks
  15. Any ideas how to create a service catalog? And could anyone post theirs as an example? Thanks!
  16. Sounds good! 1. Did you use the Minimal Hybrid setting on the wizard? 2. How long have you had Exchange running still since you did the migration, and why haven't you decommissioned yet? 3. Did you have you change any mail flow settings on Exchange/Mimecast/DNS when you completed the wizard? (Apart from the SPF record). THANK YOU!
  17. I want to configure our Exchange 2010 server with Office 365. My users are configured in Office 365 already with AD Azure Connect Sync and they can log in to use OneDrive and Office Online. I want to migrate their mailboxes into Office 365 so they can access they mail together with the use of the other Office 365 tools. We use Mimecast for spam filtering and archiving and will continue to do so for now. This initial setup needs to be as simple as possible. Question If I configure Exchange Minimal Hybrid, am I correct in saying that emails flow all the same. From Mimecast to Exchange and then it syncs with Office 365? So in theory no mail flow changes are required? We can keep our Exchange On-Premise for now and Mimecast? Thank you.
  18. Hello all, Does anyone have a template or useful resource on the best way to survey staff on what software they use or need access to. We have survey monkey but question suggestions would be great too. Thanks
  19. I have 3 apprentices but being in the field for only a few years, my technical knowledge is limited. I want high level engineers but they wont give me it.. instead they can pay for consultants.. I've offered them all sorts.. seems to get no where unless SHTF.
  20. They've requested the desktop versions.... weird I know...
  21. Another political issue on site... Management have removed all clocks from classrooms (no idea why) but now teachers are stinking up a fuss over it. Apart from the digital clock on the task-bar, how else could we display a clock on all desktops with minimal effort and technical resources.
  22. I have never done a roll out before, and being alone I am not sure I want to lol.. We have a lot of classrooms and roaming staff.. if you are similar, what challenges have you had from moving from roaming profiles?
  23. My COO is rather fair and would allow me to spend time at other schools. I'm confident he will pay for training at the end of the project too. Its difficult for me to complete projects alone because the apprentices are always asking questions and need support so it is hard for me to concentrate on something.. especially if it is something i have never done before, trying to learn and failing with.. not having another technical person to reflect off of is difficult too. This school is the first I've worked at and I have only been doing IT for 5 years.. my exp and skill are already limited.. I think having someone here for many months to go through the project at a steady pace will be enough time to show me how things are set up and configured with daily progress.
  24. I've tried to set up MDT with thin images for almost 9 months. Managing an IT Service department with 3 apprentices is tough.. I just don't have the time to really concentrate on a single project. I am beginning to lose motivation and confidence being so alone to be honestly. I am hoping new blood with experience will re-joy me. Official training and certs can always be done side by side or afterwards too.
