Google gives most Chromebooks an extra year of software support
Primus replied to Arthur's topic in Cloud Services
Have you actually ever used a Chromebook? They run fine with fairly minimal hardware, the issues you're implying don't exist. Support is so easy - we never have any issues with them once they're deployed and deployment is quick and easy too. They basically manage themselves after some initial work on the admin console that's been documented online by lots of other schools who've gone Chromebook already. -

iPad 2s are 8 years old - how long are you expecting to get out of them? -
Yup was also about to say sounds DNS related.

If you take into account trade in then you'd be looking at way less for a Chromebook. I paid £149 ex VAT per Chromebook recently and that was without any trade in! The whole point of a Chromebook is that it doesn't need a beefy processor! -

No more drinks though? -
The difference is how schools choose to spend their cash - I speak as someone based at a school in the NE with far more realistic budgets than yours - you have my sympathies as it sounds like a rubbish position to be in!

[1903, au] Profiles - Mandatory for Kids, Roaming for Staff - Possible in W10?
Primus replied to JRA's topic in Windows 10
Why do you want to have a mandatory profile for students? Why do you want to have a roaming profile for staff? If you outline what you need then you'll get better advice. -
Says the person whose comment took us off topic!

If students don't have to unplug and move equipment because they've got splitters then that's going to resolve the issue?
-
GAM can do this.
-
So he's identified an area where equipment gets damaged, he's trying to do something to prevent it and you want to suggest to him that he's not doing his job properly? Seriously?

Yeah - they launched it in the USA in July 2018 - it's had lots and lots of positive reviews online since. This is the same product now being launched in the UK.

We took over a school that was run by Gaia when their contract expired and they entered our MAT (recently). The entire IP schema is based on 11.0.0.0/8 - and the windows domains are all .internal but were only made last year. The Hyper-V hosts and vSAN hosts are all on a different domain to the production domain - the whole setup is barking mad.
-
The ring system has been out in the US for ages and reviews are extremely positive. It’s also very good value for money.

My setup? My setup uses Unifi switches not Edge. Oh to clarify - this may be confusing - our edge switching is Unifi, but our core is HP. The Ubiquiti Edge product line is a branding term and is totally separate to Unifi. Just be aware Unifi switches cannot route between vLANs.
-
Yes but be aware it's not managed through the Unifi software or Cloud Key.
-
Just coming back to this - you talk about a core switch and inter vLAN routing - none of the Unifi switches can do this. Their USG can do inter vLAN routing however.
-
The Cloud Key does manage the switches but depending on what functionality you require you may not need it running once the switches are configured in any case.
-
38 switches - most are the 48 port non-PoE, we have about 6 PoE switches. What features are you relying on the controller for? Most of the features don't even rely on the controller being online after initial setup but some will.
-
3 years - we have 1250 students, around 500 desktop PCs and 400 Chromebooks. They're all in air conditioned hub rooms but I've run them on a shelf before with zero issue - other than the fan can be a little loud like any managed PoE switch. I literally have had no issues, never had to reboot one etc. They are rock solid.
-
You can host the controller online for free - a quick Google will get you the instructions.
-
We've been using US-48-500w with zero issues. Looking at their PoE wattage draw we're nowhere close to 500w even on our busiest switches. Do you really want the cloudkey? You can run the controller in a VM which is more flexible and saves on the cost.
