It's a bad idea because the cable used in each splitter socket (or whatever you want to call it) is only designed to take the load of however many devices can be plugged into it (ie 2, 4, 6 etc) If you were to chain a second 4-socket splitter into the first one, and had devices plugged into all of the free sockets (so 7 devices) you're likely to overload the max. power rating for the cable in the first splitter (as in the one plugged into the wall) and get a burn or worse...a fire. I've seen it happen in the past where someone has done this and it's gotten too hot to touch! As for legality I'm not sure, common sense should rule on this one to be honest.

What Martin says makes a lot of sense. If you want to turn off STP on a port on a cisco switch you need to run the following on the port: Switch(config-if)#spanning-tree portfast

Gah bugger. Makes portability a bit...well....lacking if you're going to start carrying around the external USB drives and the associated cables with it too. On the other hand, no mechanical hard drive is quite appealing seeing as i've killed two in laptops in the past year.

Presumably you can you upgrade the hard drive in them with a suitable 2.5" drive?

There was talk on a forum a while back of porting it to FreeBSD (Which isn't Linux but a BSD variant). I don't know if anything came of this though. Where servers are concerned I feel a lot more at home with FreeBSD than something like Ubuntu these days for some reason.

Seeing as my laptop has just gawn and broke (yet another one...I don't know what I do to them!) I'm in the market for a portable device that I can use for doing work on, checking e-mails and configuring switches and routers etc via console and web interface. Another ThinkPad would be lovely but I'm not entirely sure the budget is going to stretch to this at the moment (Student loans, overdraft etc etc.....it's my own fault for choosing uni!) so the EEE has taken my interest somewhat. Where's the best place to get them from, is RM the only place or are there other alternatives for getting a quote?

I find kicking, whilst widely disregarded, is a valid method of repair. Especially on anything that's got whining noises coming from it (ie fan noise or irritating kids).

Something I feel I need to learn is a bit of restraint. Restrain myself from entering into any flame wars, because, by nature I'm rather defensive of something I think, believe or am. I'm growing quite conscious of the fact that anything childish or out of line that I might do on the forums could affect badly on the other younger members' reputations and credibility if someone was to generalise their opinions to that particular group of people. Although, I've been here since Jan 2006 (when I /was/ working in Educational IT) so, hopefully I'm not seen as too childish

*opens himself up for some ridicule* OK. I'm gay. I don't find it offensive. I find it childish and very tedious that my sexuality is used on a very regular basis by both people on EduGeek and people I know in real life, to describe something that a bad opinion is held for. It's quite disappointing that people working in what I would consider to be a modern industry, can be so antiquated in their views and concepts of society.

To be substantially less "single" would be nice. I'd like to get a hell of a lot better at slap bass and my improvisation skills...I've not played as part of any kind of band in a couple of years now and am lacking practice. I used to play in the school swing band and their equivalent of an orchestra (an orchestra with a bass I ask you!?) after giving up on the euphonium in favour of something that had a bit more soul to it and taught myself to play from bass clef stave notation...which, whilst I was quite proud of that, hasn't helped my improvisation or ability to remember riffs.

Clothes, trainers, chocolates, some JD, some wine, the Clapton Autobiography and 14 pairs of socks (Literally!) Presents to myself however include, a couple of t-shirts and a new piercing. Come the new year I'm going to be riding my overdraft even harder and going hunting for a nice Ashdown bass amp in the "sales" as an extra present to myself, much to my housemates' great disgust I'm sure
