Classlink broken since Windows Updates?
Squip replied to Squip's topic in Network and Classroom Management
No support contract, the only errors I can find in the event viewer are - Source: IIS-Configuration Event ID: 12 Unable to find schema for config section 'system.serviceModel/client'. This section will be ignored. Unable to find schema for config section 'system.serviceModel/extensions'. This section will be ignored. This is logged every time I restart the website. Have also checked C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\HTTPERR but nothing obvious. Come to think of it I have installed WSUS on the same server also around the same time, am going to try and uninstall it now on one and see what happens -
This is a long shot but here goes.. I have not long taken over 2 seperate sites which both use classlink9 only to find both DC's haven't installed Windows Updates since their servers were installed in 2011. Fast forward, 200 odd server updates later and now whenever I try to browse to http://classlink9 on either server you get a HTTP 500 error. I have spoken to Viglen who have said isn't a known fault and want £600 for half a days work to fix it, but I'm thinking it's a bit of a coincidence it has happened on 2 completely separate servers with Windows Updates. Anyone happen to have had this problem before? Otherwise it's going to be a long day for me removing updates one at a time

Digging up an old thread here.. I love the idea of using something like Ubuntu as my main OS. I think Windows is too unrestrictive and not robust, OS X is solid as a rock but you are kind of forced into using Apples services, and Linux kind of fits snuggly between the two? Truth be told, I have only dabbled with linux (Ubuntu) and was very impressed. The only problem I am going to have is working out the alternative methods for what I have been used to for a very long time - things like alternatives for Office (mainly just for access to Exchange emails) I'm assuming Open Office?. Also RDP to windows (a quick google looks like rdesktop is the number one choice). Am I kind of along the right lines here?

When I first started in all of the schools I look after they ALL had laptops NOT connected to the domain and it was a nightmare (local account with their username, startup scripts to map drives), especially at the start of the school year when teachers were leaving/starting at the schools it was a real PITA changing local accounts on laptops. Whenever we buy new laptops I always re-image them and put them on the domain with minimal policies applied (proxy settings, map drives, my documents redirection, printers etc) and set up offline files for the homedrive, and also give them a VPN connection into the school. Not trying to hijack this thread but if anyone has any ideas to better this setup then id love to hear - I dont like the idea of laptops and I'm thinking desktops with twin VGA output would be much better in many aspects

iClarified - Apple News - iOS 7 Update Removed Supervision Profiles From School iPads Might want to hold off of letting people do a OTA upgrade to iOS 7, might be more trouble then it's worth until this bug is rectified. I got one site I am due to visit very soon with supervised iPads with managed VPP apps and I'm really hoping that no one has upgraded yet, my guess is that I now wont be able to reclaim the app from the device. If this is the case then I wont be best pleased with Apple! Anyone noticed any problems regarding this?

We are already using MDT. Thanks for the pointers guys, I will give it a go and see what happens!

Has anyone tried to create a Win7 master image from a Hyper-V VM to be deployed to a physical machine? It would be very useful just for the snapshot aspect (would save a world of bother if sysprep failed etc). I am having a go at it now but would appreciate any comments from anyone that has tried this before?

I am in the middle of a big layered ownership setup for staff iPads including distributing VPP apps with Apple Configurator. I am on the understanding that if a iPad gets destroyed with a VPP app installed that we have lost that licence. However what would happen if a staff member accidentally deleted an app? Will we be able to reclaim that?

[ipad] 100 ipads just sat waiting for me
Squip replied to MattDLEA's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Can you elaborate on this? I really hope this is true; the whole VPP codes thing is rubbish -
If anyone can help me with my problem it would be greatly appreciated.. I'm pretty new to VPN technology and I'm trying to set home basic home access for school owned laptops issued to staff, and iPad WebDAV access externally via RRAS + PPTP VPN. I've got most of it working tickety boo, everything works perfect from the Windows clients. iPad clients do connect and they can access intranet sites etc, but cannot access any WebDAV shares by hostname or IP even though they can be pinged. The WebDAV works internally with exactly the same settings Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? The frustration is driving me insane!

http://www.meraki.com/lib/pdf/meraki_whitepaper_ios.pdf This is the setup we follow across multiple sites. Use AC to install apps and a single Meraki profile, then use Meraki for further profiles and auditing

This is supposed to be pretty good - xPrintServer - an iOS Print Server for iPhone and iPad Printing It literally just has a ethernet and power socket irrc. Just plug it in somewhere and bobs your uncle

http://www.meraki.com/lib/pdf/meraki_whitepaper_ios.pdf This guide is fantastic and I'm sure you will find this helpful. Essentially you only want to use AC to install apps and the Meraki profile, then use Meraki to install other restrictions and profiles. I personally haven't even bothered with a naming convention with the iPads. I know this might sound crazy/lazy etc but it for me it has really never served a purpose. They are all identifiable by the serial number (which is displayed in Meraki anyway). The only reason I could see myself naming them was if we had more than one class set which were set up differently

Transparent proxy could be an alternative option? This would eliminate the need for the pac file altogether

advice gotchas required for sophos update from 4.x to 5.1
Squip replied to round2it's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Upgraded to 5.1 the other day. I read something about an exe that will back up all your data first but I couldn't find it and was feeling brave. Everything was fine. Just be aware that you can't upgrade straight to 5.2; you have to install 5.1 first. -
Had exactly the same problem a few weeks back week; sysprep failing and C:\Windows\Panther\UnattendGC\setuperr.log was showing something about a IE component error on our first IE10 image - removed IE settings from the unattend this and all was good again. We ended up removing IE10 altogether not long afterwards. We had so many compatibility problems with it!

I know it's a bit late but I thought I should probably update on my progress.. I started small and bought myself a Raspberry Pi and a fairly comprehensive book on Linux. Whereas I used avoid most things to do with Linux it was only because I knew very little about it. I feel like I almost know it inside-out and have found many uses for it. Thanks to all for the insight

Have tried both AirServer and Reflector. Got on better with AirServer because everything is already in place (no need for HDMI to VGA adapters etc) and hella lot cheaper that Apple TVs, but it is probably worth trying each first.

First things first let me apologise for a really noobish open-ended question (the type of question that I usually hate). In all honesty I only know the absolute basics of Linux. I understand that almost everything is done through the terminal/SSH, that it much more stable then Windows but less GUI friendly, and that installing Samba kind of bridges the gap between Windows and Linux protocols etc. I really like the idea of delving into Linux more but aside from a much more reliable DNS, DHCP, Web server and FTP server I am really struggling to see how it could benefit an IT setup. I suppose my end question is.. what do YOU use Linux for/how does it benefit your IT setup?

It's far from an ideal solution and i'm not even sure if it would work, but could you make a new OU with the policy that stops certain security groups logging on to that machine (Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment > Deny log on locally), and somehow script it to move the machine to the new OU every 6 months? Like I say, it might not even work - just in idea Thinking about it, isn't there a way to display a message before the log on screen too? could put something in there about the machine automatically being locked because of a 6 monthly tune up needed

I only support primaries (all sizes) - all only have 1 server running everything on each site. The only exceptions is 1 school that has a 2nd tiny server which is replicating AD and backing up files because the primary server is 8 years old and about to fall over any minute, and another school has a virtual 2003 server running off the primary server acting as a print server due to specific driver issues. Most sites have a robust backup either by RDX cartridges stored in a fireproof safe, and/or a Buffalo NAS drive located in a cabinet elsewhere in the school

Virtual testing environment DHCP/DNS
Squip replied to Squip's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Thank you so much! Only working in primaries I had no idea what RRAS was. Dead easy to setup and works perfect! I was just about to get my RaspPi out and make that a permanent DHCP/DNS server across my whole network but this has saved me a lot of hassle. -
I'm trying to set up a basic test environment with VMs on my home PC - I only work in primaries and don't really have the spare equipment or a quiet place to try anything extravagant on site. All is going well so far; VirtualBox with 1 x DC, 1 x XP and 1 x Win7 Client. My question is this - what is the best way tackle the DHCP/DNS setup? I'm currently using my home router for DHCP and all VM's are bridged straight to router, but without Windows DHCP server I cannot PXE boot (I have very little DHCP options with my router. Router isn't compatible with DD-WRT either ). The other option is to give all the VM's a private internal network but the clients wont have any internet access. The only option I can think (and I'm not even sure it is possible) is to give the DC two NICs. Give out DHCP addresses on one of them, and bridge the 2nd to my home router and NAT the two across somehow? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure there is a simple fix for this that I'm missing

I don't think you need to plug the phone into the work PC to achieve what you are trying to do. On the iPhone go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Exchange. Enter server info etc and choose what to sync from Exchange (Contacts and/or Mail and/or Calendar). Then just sync the iPhone with the personal PC like usual to get the music loaded onto it.

Ipad Deployment - Server Choice & Information
Squip replied to Darylrese's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
The only reason we are using OS X servers and Apple Configurator in our schools is for deploying Apps. From what I remember if you install an App through Meraki it comes up with an pop up that can't be bypassed. I'm sure this isn't something implemented by Meraki but instead Apple. Except for that it really is a fantastic tool
