  1. That actually looks really tasty!
  2. Also worth noting that it works pretty well with an Xbox360 controller (and presumably any similar dual thumbstick controller) if anyone doesn't want to buy a Joystick.
  3. I'm enjoying playing it but space feels kind of 'empty' at the moment and some of the missions are pretty repetitive. The core combat, flight mechanics are good and the immersion factor is fantastic but feature wise it's a bit barren IMO. Hopefully the multiplayer aspect will add to it once they roll out the final release. Speaking of which for something that's supposed to be an MMO you don't really have much opportunity, or many ways, to interact with other player directly at the moment. I think the best thing about it is definitely the immersion. That and the fact that if feels genuinely like something new and fresh. It'll be interesting to see what else they add prior to release next month.
  4. Elite: Dangerous gets a release date: December 16 | Ars Technica Woot
  5. Taylor Swift wants no part of the music streaming 'experiment' "If I had streamed the new album, it's impossible to try to speculate what would have happened. But all I can say is that music is changing so quickly, and the landscape of the music industry itself is changing so quickly, that everything new, like Spotify, all feels to me a bit like a grand experiment. And I'm not willing to contribute my life's work to an experiment that I don't feel fairly compensates the writers, producers, artists, and creators of this music. And I just don't agree with perpetuating the perception that music has no value and should be free. I wrote an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal this summer that basically portrayed my views on this. I try to stay really open-minded about things, because I do think it's important to be a part of progress. But I think it's really still up for debate whether this is actual progress, or whether this is taking the word "music" out of the music industry. Also, a lot of people were suggesting to me that I try putting new music on Spotify with "Shake It Off," and so I was open-minded about it. I thought, "I will try this; I'll see how it feels." It didn't feel right to me. I felt like I was saying to my fans, "If you create music someday, if you create a painting someday, someone can just walk into a museum, take it off the wall, rip off a corner off it, and it's theirs now and they don't have to pay for it." I didn't like the perception that it was putting forth. And so I decided to change the way I was doing things." I'd reading that as Taylor saying that she isn't getting a big enough cut from Spotify and reckons she can shift a few good few physical units to kids as presents in the run up to Xmas...... I have to say I think it's somewhat amusing that we have a thread discussing Taylor Swift on the site

  7. Nah, that's shockingly low for fibre and pretty average for broadband even. I would have thought you'd be within your rights to cancel given the advertised speeds would surely have been about 38mb for Sky's lower tier fibre package. I went for the former Sky fibre package and I usually get around 33 Mbps. And my broadband was truly appalling previously at only around 1 Mbps before moving to fibre.

    dlc in games

I also think another reason companies are adding so much DLC is as a way of getting a cut of sales of 2nd hand games. Often when you buy a game it will come with a one use code for access to multiplayer/DLC. If you sell the game on the person who buys it then need to re-buy the DLC content guaranteeing the publisher gets a slice of the revenue. Looking at it positively when I think about it new games have cost about the same price £30-40 for the last decade or two. Taking inflation into account they should be way more expensive than they are now. I still remember paying £60 for some of the higher capacity cartridge games like street fighter 2 turbo, Mortal Kombat 2 on the SNES and N64 in the 90's so maybe things aren't so bad now when you look at it that way. I also don't mind companies bringing out expansion packs for games a year or so after release but DLC in general cant die soon enough! It's just a scam really.
  9. IOS 8 has been pretty much OK one my iPhone 4s. I certainly wouldn't recommend that anyone skip it as it has some nice new features without much of a noticeable effect on performance. I'm not so happy with the performance of my iPad Retina (3rd Gen) however. It's been pretty flaky since I upgraded it. Web pages in Safari often takes ages to render and sometimes require a page refresh before they'll load. A friend suggested it's better to install the update using iTunes connected to a PC after wiping the device rather than upgrading directly on it so I may have to give that a try to see if it improves things.

    dlc in games

Yeah, it's getting kind of ridiculous. My current gripe is companies releasing so called 'season passes' for content. Where you buy the game for £30-40 then have to spend another £30-40 to make sure you get the updates for it whilst it's out. Titanfall for example really annoyed me with this to the point where I flat out refused to pay twice the price of the game for a couple of map packs. Just today in fact I was contemplating pre-ordering Far Cry 4 but I notice they're offering the standard (yet somehow called 'limited edition' as it gives you supposedly 'free' day one DLC) for £40 or the option to buy the 'gold edition' which comes with a 'season pass' for £65. The baffling array of editions of the game they're offering (gold/standard/kyrat/limited edition) has actually put me off wanting to pre-order the game. They're even selling a special Blood Ruby DLC pack only available for customers who pre-order FFS!!! Where will it all end? If companies are going to be so underhand with the tactics they use to gouge customers at every opportunity I'd rather just pay for a subscription style model where I get access to all content and pay a weekly/monthly fee whilst I'm playing it. I understand that companies have to maintain online multiplayer servers and potentially pay a cut to MS/Sony/etc for using their online services but I really dislike the whole DLC payment model they're all moving towards.
  11. If you're willing to push your budget a bit further you can get a Geforce 970 for around £250 which, whilst pricey, does offer performance that warrants the cost IMO. It's very nearly double the performance of the 760 in most benchmarks. Just noticed it on OCUK for £240. Bargain...! http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-039-IN&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1010 How's everyone getting on with beta 3. It feels like there's been a noticeable drop in performance? Not sure if it's an issue with lag or a specific setting on my system.
  12. Awesome sauce!
  13. Interesting, surprised Extremetech managed to get it so wrong and haven't corrected it yet.
  14. Just noticed an interesting update on this monitor that I thought may be worth pointing out to anyone contemplating it which is that it only runs at 30Hz when displaying in 5k Analyzing the iMac 5K Retina display: How do you squeeze 5K out of a last-gen GPU? (updated) | ExtremeTech One of the major questions regarding Apple’s 5K display is whether or not it would be a 30Hz or 60Hz panel. We’ve had an opportunity to see some demonstrations of gaming on the 27-inch iMac with 5K Retina display and can confirm that it’s a 30Hz panel when operating in 5K mode. Below 5K, the panel shifts to 60Hz, though we couldn’t confirm exactly when the 60/30 shift occurs. It’s a 60Hz panel up to at least 2560×1440. If this panel indeed uses an overclocked DisplayPort 1.2 signal, as we discuss below, it could be 60Hz up to 4K (3840×2160). DisplayPort 1.2 is capable of providing an SST link of 60Hz at that resolution. It’s still a beautiful display regardless, and many may argue (with justification) that the 30Hz limit is inconsequential because the GPU inside the system — a fairly weak mobile AMD GPU — can’t drive gaming above 30 fps at 5K anyway. Nonetheless, if you edit video above 30 fps, and wanted to create 5K content, this may impact your buying decision. The original story remains below.
  15. Lol, it's not like that saving is going to make any difference whatsoever in the scheme of things when it comes to learning to drive, buying a car and then running it with all of the maintenance/fuel/road tax and insurance that entails.
  16. Currently running on an i7-920/Geforce 770 with everything set to high at 1080p. Seems to be running smoothly from the tutorial missions I've tried so far.
  17. Just ordered the beta aswell so downloading it at the moment. Probably getting caught up in the hype but I've been watching a few of the beta videos on Youtube and it looks epic. I don't think I've played a space combat sim since X-Wing vs TIE Fighter! I'm surprised it's taken so long for someone to resurrect the genre as elite has been crying out for an online variant. I'll give it a shot on the xbox controller but I can see myself investing in a Joystick for this and Star Citizen at some point
  18. £320 starting price, £80 for another 16Gb of storage and £110 for a keyboard cover! Looks like it's the end of the line for reasonably priced Google Nexus devices It says a lot that they've priced it at exactly the same level as an iPad Mini 3 (£320). Except for £400 Apple actually give you more memory! I guess the new Tegra K1 is probably a tad faster than the Apple's previous gen A7 but even though...... I don't see Google shifting many of these.
  19. Interesting to see the size comparison but personally I'd draw the line at around 5" for a phone.
  20. Really disappointed Google have decided to go down the phablet route with their new Nexus phone I quite fancied making the jump from my iPhone to android and thought the new Google phone would be the best option but I'm not interested in a phone that large.
  21. Xbox/PlayStation controller might be another option?
  22. Not strickly speaking Anime but Morty and Rick is worth a watch. Rick and Morty - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Rick is an elderly and mentally unbalanced alcoholic who has recently reconnected with his family. He is also a scientific genius. He spends most of his time taking his young grandson Morty (and later other family members) on dangerous, outlandish adventures throughout our own cosmos and alternate universes. Compounded with Morty's already unstable family life, these events cause Morty much distress at home and school. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09EyMd3fpLc Also, like most of the other stuff on this thread, not for kids!
  23. I was quite interested in the Nexus 9 especially as it looks like it's going to have a 4:3 ratio screen which, to me at least, is a much better form factor for a tablet than 16:9. Google HTC Nexus 9 Release Date, Specs, Features, Price: Likely Launches in October 2014 : In the news : Christian Music, Christian Music News, BREATHEcast Should be out soon and the specs are great but the rumoured price tag is a bit worrying. It's actually looking like it'll be priced at the same level as an iPad Mini retina if the rumours are to be believed. Previous Nexus phones/tablets have always been appealing due to their high specs and low-ish price points. It's a bold strategy on Google's part if they're going to try and price their new tablet on a par with Apple's iPad.
  24. To be fair I'm sure Microsoft would have had a desktop app store over a decade ago if they'd been allowed to. I can only begin to imagine the anti-trust/abuse of monopoly lawsuits MS would have been hit with if they'd announced 10 years ago that they were going to bring out an app store which all software vendors would have to release their apps through and Microsoft would take a cut of the profit on each sale. I suspect it's only because Google/Apple operate on that basis that Microsoft are now able to get away with doing the same! Personally I think they should have called it Windows 11. It would have been great for Spinal Tap homages. I can see the sales pitch now ..... Microsoft : "For years Apple have struggled to bring out an OS version higher than 10 but we're pleased to announce that Microsoft now has an OS that goes to 11. " Public: "...But why not just call it Windows 9?" Microsoft " Because 11 is two major release versions more advanced than 9"
  25. Using VMware myself. I keep forgetting about the build in HyperV support in Windows 8.1. Will have to give it a try sometime.
