  1. Our UPS has an alarm, but it is located in a different room to where I need the alarm. The alerts would only be any good if someone was definitely at their PC when the power trips.
  2. Looks like an option, but I was hoping for just something small and relatively cheap that can just sit in a spare socket.
  3. I am looking for an alarm that will sound if there is a power loss, such as... Power Out® Power Failure Warning Alarm Plus Flishlight (THP-207) - Disaster / Emergency - Ace Hardware but that can be used in the UK. Unfortunately, our servers are on the same circuit as some other sockets in our school, and I have had a number of occasions where people have tripped the fuse breaker, not noticed, and then the chaos that follows when the UPS runs out of juice. All I want is a small plug in device that sets off an alarm or buzzer when the AC cuts out. Has anyone seen anything similar available here in the UK? My searches have found nothing so far.
  4. There was a chap I worked with in a previous job that I had to explain that stars are a VERY long way away, and you won't hit them if you were just to go up in a shuttle. He was convinced they were just hanging above the Earth and you would have to be very careful not to hit one!
  5. Sounds good. I will have a hunt around for some deals.
  6. Good idea, but both laptops are Windows XP
  7. I am looking to buy a mobile broadband dongle to use when out and about caravaning. However, I want to connect up two laptops. Is there any way to share the connection across two laptops? I was thinking of possibly using a USB hub, and connecting both laptops to that? Would that work? Any other ideas, or do I just have pay out and buy two dongles?
  8. I am very surprised to see that there are no Everquest II players. Is there something that I should know? Or are you all hiding? My mains are on the Guk US server: Hatter - Level 90 Dirge Dormous - Level 47ish Assassin (currently working on the leveling!) Used to be on WoW, but I converted about 3 years ago.
  9. I have bought a few things from 7dayshop.com - Online shopping made easy ! before now. Worth a look.
  10. I am trying to figure out the best way of keeping our teacher laptops in control, but am not sure of the best way. I am hoping that there are some people out there that can give me some recommendations. I am currently running a CC3 network in a primary school. All student computers (laptops and desktops) are Win XP and are CC3 workstations. All students have roaming profiles. The staff laptops are all Win XP standalone machines (aprox. 15 of them). They connect up to the network for AV updates, internet access, and network printing. I want to make it easier so that I can centrally control Microsoft updates, backups, network shares, SIMS access, etc. However, they also need to be able to be used at home and connect to individual's broadband. What is the best approach to be able to do this? Make them into CC3 workstations (what type)? Or should I join them to the domain in a different way (is that possible with CC3 networks)? Any suggestions? Any feedback is much appreciated
  11. I suppose this could cause some problems in art classes. "Sorry, we can't do finger painting any more as we haven't had parental permission!"
  12. Are there any particular CDs that you always keep at hand to help you with your job? I have been recently trying to sort out my collection and thought I would give some of mine, and see what other people used. DBAN (Darik's Boot And Nuke) DBAN Download | Darik's Boot And Nuke Used to securely wipe any hard drive Puppy Linux Puppy Linux Great to access files when Windows has died. Ultimate Boot CD Ultimate Boot CD - Overview Although never used it myself, have been recommended it, and have a copy just in case.
  13. Having bought these laptops in September 2007, the warranty has lapsed on these laptops. However, I am clutching at straws to see if there is anything that I can get FS to do. As I have had three of four laptops die in exactly the same manner, with screws falling out, DVD-ROMs failing (latter non-terminal problems on all four laptops), it is most obviously a manufacturing fault with this batch of laptops. Have I got any approach I can take with FS, or do I just give up and add them to my collection of door stops? (With the exception of phoning their out of warranty phone line at 60p/min to be told that the repairs will cost more than I bought the laptops for!)
  14. No, what a big mistake. When running against a budget, 3 year warranties aren't always the priority though!
  15. Well, another one has died today. Exactly the same symptoms. Still no idea how to fix. NEVER buying Fujitsu-Siemens laptops again.
  16. I am getting the same message on some of our CC3 workstations, even though we have IE7 installed on the machines Any ideas?
  17. Possibly Treesize Free http://download.cnet.com/TreeSize-Free/3000-2248_4-81064.html?tag=mncol
  18. I'm looking to install Spiceworks, but am not sure if it's something that will sit on the server, or do I ideally need a separate PC to host it?
  19. Not sure about removing it, but T-Cut will sort out any bits that were missed!
  20. I have reported the relevant URL and search term to EMBC/Synetrix, so hopefully they can do something about it.
  21. We don't have a local web filter. We use the EMBC web filter provided for Northants schools. I have PMd you with the search phrase. I don't want to post on the forums in case I get told off!
  22. Has anyone had a problem with getting a google image search removed? I have reported an image twice, and both times they have been denied, with google giving their usual unhelpful reason: Is there any way to dispute this? In my opinion, a Strict image search of an innocent phrase should not result in a cartoon naked clown! Do they have have an "it's art, so is allowed" rule?
  23. November 28th 2:00pm (It's when I'm getting married, so seems like a good date and time to me! )
  24. NOTE: This thread is a split of a old thread here, please refer to it for prior posts. ZH Can I bring this thread back out of hibernation at the bottom of the boards? My primary school is currently using Sophos to cover 60 PCs (Windows XP, CC3 network). It is now up for renewal at the end of November and I am unsure whether to renew, or look at a different AV. As a lot of the comments in this thread are over 4 years old, I was wondering what people think is the best, or are the main contenders? Has anyone got any thoughts?
