We have a file server that we use to back up to across the network. Its not mission critical but we need to get it back up and running as soon as poss. When it boots up it comes up with a 'winlogon.exe unable to locate component' error. The error is 'this application failed to start because IMAGEHLP.dll was not found, try re-installing the application may fix this.' Now, this server has nothing on it apart form a bog standard server 2003 enterprise install, it has not other MS or 3rd party software installed. Nw if you click ok to thes error it goes through to the log on box. You log in and the 'explorer.exe' gives the same error. If you click ok to that it logs in but with no GUI. I can run task manager and also remote the pc from another server. Problem we have is this server sits high up on a cab and has no monitor,KB or mouse connected as we remote it all the time. Any suggestions?

I want a cheap network printer, we currently have a few parallel printers that are dotted around the plcae, linked to netgear print servers. I would like a cheap network printer(with built in NIC) It does not need to be fancy or heavy duty as it is for home use only.

We have recently had CMiS in trying to convince us to move to them from SIms, Our SLT are not sure what to do at the mo. I was looking at the training manual and also the evalutaion cd. How do you back up the SQL database? With server 2003, can the sevrer be backed up as a whole with NT back up as it can back up open files? Or does the SQL db of CMis have to be stopped with a script so it can be back up as in what SIms does?

So what would be the correct way of backing up CMIS

I dont know much about RIS on servers but wondered is it possible to add Raid drivers to the flat install? I have machine that has a raid card and normally we use F6 to add raid drivers during the early how would yuo do this if you wanted to RIS the machine?
-
Not sure if this has been mentioned before. We have the latest version of Macromedia suite on around 40 machines. It was part of a RIS image deployed to these rooms. Problems is that on random machines the student cannot create a file then save it to their home areas. But if they open a existing file they can edit it and resave it. This happens randomly and not always on the same machine, some machines work one week then dont for the same user the next. Any one had this problem?

How do you do it? We have been running media studies this year and some of the file sizes being created are for me stupidly big. To be fair to the teacher in charge he has not been given any proper training and has just had a few camcorders and other kit thrown at him. How are your staff/kids saving video files, what format, compression etc?

One of our first DC's is just over 3 years old and is doing ok. One problem we have is that it also hold all of the students home directories. Due to media studies taking off in year 11 this year we have seen a sharp rise in data storage. We are thinking of buying a new server this year but going for rackmount instead of pedastal. But we would also like to get a NAS box to hold all the home areas. W ehave no need to introduce quotas as we can easily afford both options mentioned above. How do you currently do it and what wouuld you recommend.

Can some one point me to a idiots guide of backing up a SQL database. That is always running. Or give me a idiots guide here.

@Dos Box, Soory to hear about the sturdy carry handles. I like the look of those but the price on the page would i guess definately put SLT right off. @Ric do you have a link or more info on those HPs or Dell you mentioned?
-
Are any of you using these, we have been asked to look at these for our llanguages dept as they dont have much room and space is a issue. I know RM do them and also http://www.pars.co.uk have them in their catalogue. I am looking for some feedback, price and recommendations on these all in on pc's please.

Just out of interest, if the main DC with all the FSMO roles was stolen, how would you resolve the problems left and how would this affect the remaining DC. I now know about changing DC's and changing roles to a new DC but can't help wondering what sort of mess would be left if the DC was stolen. (hope i never have to find out in reality)
-
@Chris Thanks for your help so far, You can transfer all 5 roles via GUI according to the link AJ provided. I have a script that huts down all the Exchange sevrices before i do reboot/shutdown, i have no delays because of this. If anyone would like hte script let me know. While we are on the subject does anyone know of any good links that will rum me through splitting current DNS and DHCP to 2 servers?
-
Just been looking, lol I prefer to do it the GUI way i think. I know that the one DC in question at work holds all 5 FSMO roles. I will look into sharing the roles or possibly giving them all to the brand new DC when it comes and is configured. Questions, 1. If i transfer all the roles to the new DC will it have any affect on the second DC that is runnign Exchange? 2. Should i get the new one up and running with AD etc ( si iw ill have 3 DC's for a short while) before i DCpromo the old DC I suppose my next Google will be to look for info on sharing the DNS and DHCP on 2 servers. All good fun and experience................at least the longer he is off sick the more i get to do........lol

Where is the setting to disable the tray in GP?
-
Ok, seems to be more work involved than i thought. They to put Exchange on a DC because it was the only available server at the time.
-
We have 2 DC's here, the one does all DNS, DHCP and the other is has Exchange installed. THe main one that does the DNS and DHCP is going to be replaced. I know fom reading on here that you can/should possibly split the loads of DNS, DHCP to each DC. COuld some one recommend a correct procedure/configuration to do this. 1. Should i just take the DNS, DHCP roles off the old one in the holidays and install them on the the new DC and split them later? 2. Should i then DCpromo the old server and just leave the two DC still.? (i was told 3 is over kill for our network) I have been left to do this as our NM is off long term sick and no one knows when he will be back. I just need advice on the best way/time/process to do this please.

I was wondering if any one know how to do this or if it is possible. We are testing the new version of Sophos on a test network with around 5 laptops connected to it. We have set up the EM Librabry and EM COnsole and deployed the software. All is well so far, when a student user logs on I know they only get certain access to the Sophos Options by right clicking the shield near the clock or by using the 'start menu>programs route. Is there any way we can stop them having any access by right clicking the sheild near the clock. I can forsee all sorts of problems withthem messing about with certain settings Or do you leave them acces to this, advice needed please.

We've had this problem today as well, we ran practice test for 25 kids today and all went well apart form the error you described. Before i go through the long phone call to RM for the same fix can you tell us more about the fix and what instructions you were given Even what is in the bat file will be good.
