Just out of interest to all those who have any MCP. HOw did ou find studying for the 'Installing and COnfiguring XP or 2000@ compared to the server OS ones. I am currently studying to take the 20-270 XP exam and there eems to be a lot harder than others i have looked at or is it just me?

Can you give me a bit more info on this please.

We have 4 separate buildings all connected with 1gb fibre backbone. All the fibre switches ar DLINK DGS-1224T. Over the last 6-12 months these switches have locked up on several occasions. Not all at once but sometimes three of them will lock. We put the first incident down to some kid plug a network lead into two outlets. But the locking up is happening far too often, my NM does not have a clue and he purchased these switches. I have read a little on them and seem to recall something about the tables becoming corrupt. We do nt manage these switches apart form giving them IP on our network. Does anyone know what could be casing this?

Just wondering how everyone else does this. We have the Default Domain policy set so that Windows Firewall is turned of on our domain. I have been reading in depth on this today and reading about all the various firewall options. How have you got your set up? DO you have it enabled and the configure the policy settings? Is your disabled like ours? Your thoughts and suggestions please. :dontknow:

Can some one give me a little info on these pens please. We have quite a lot of Promethean boards now and some are coming up to around 2-3 years old. I have had to replace one pen, (we keep ac couple in stock in case of loss or theft) The pen does no longer work with the board. i have taken the new one over and it works fine. Why or how do these pens become faulty? Is there a battery inside them? Any advice please.

We have just had some new computers in the office and have had to reinstall Sims and FMS on them. We had upgraded to the latest version of Sims on the server(September update). We installed Sims.net TO get this to work w had to give the Staff Group 'Modify on the C:Program Files/Sims folder. We installed FMS TO get this to work we had to give Staff Group 'Modify on the PDXOUsers file on the root of the C: drive. Then we had the problem of getting 2 of the old DOS modules to work (Personnel and can't remember the other) TO get these to work we had to give Staff Group 'Full Control' on two Sims files in the C:/windows/system folder. Now is all this correct, I am very uncertain. I do not look after Sims but i became very concerned when i found out the NM had give 'Full Control to the C: to get this to work. I told him that he should not be doing this, but he ignored me. I can't believe he did this, but then again he'd do anything to make it work has he has no interest whatsoever. I have since changed this on certain PC's to the config above, nut i would like second opinions please because i don't have much experience of installing Sims, I've only seen it recently because we have had new PC's

Ok, I found it Computer config>admin templates>system>user profiles. two settings 1. Delete cached copies of local profiles 2,Log off users when roaming profile fails. Well i have this set to enabled on the default Domain Policy and i know it works on PC's in the school and also on laptops. Little confused. I have two more OU's one called Computers which has the machines in and one called Staff which has the staff in. I thought anything in the Default Domain Policy settings overrides anything below. The reason i ask this is because in the Computer OU and Staff OU the above settings are not configured. Do I need to enable the settings in those OU as well or should the Domain OU do this automatically? I have never been too sure on how the OU GPO's inherit from one above?(still on huge learning march)

Can some one help with ideas on this. Staff have a laptop, which we set up on the network ans also put on a local user. The staff can log on to the local user when they are at home or away from the network and use their normal network log on account when on the network. We share the local users 'MY Documents' so that their network user account can save files to it so they can work from home. Is their anyway i can stop then from being able to logon tho their network account, when away from the network, I believe XP lets you log on 8-10 times with the memory cache from the network, Is it possible to stop them from logging on to the network account when at home?

Is this normal procedure, ours are all in our range?

Does anyone know of any idiot proof software that will let me open up a picture on my PC and put a title on it and save it so its always there. See, I'd use photoshop but i want something really simple so my dad can use it.........poor bugger is not the best on computers and needs to title all the pictures he took.

This is more for home use than anything else I guess. Does anyone know how to rename a load of files all at once. The example i will give is my mom has imported 1000 photos from her camera using the scanner and camera wizard in XP. But she forgot change the name of the last lot she did so now all the photos are called Majorca, instead of 100 of them being called Portugal. Now some one did show me how to do this in windows, but renaming the first file and doing some sort of key combination and the others all followed the naming. I can't remember for the life of me. Des anyone know what i mean or know of any software/other way of doing this?

I have only been a technician for 9 months or so, I dint get much chance to play with the network/servers as everything runs fine and my NM keeps me at arms length. Trouble is he has no interest in any new stuff so eventually we will fall behind. There is no money ( like most schools) for proper training so i an going to spend time myself. I have spare machine at home that i am going to install server 2003 on. I need help configuring DNS, DHCP and AD settings. I have a netgear router on my network at home that the server will connect to to get its Internet. How should i configure the server for best results bearing in mind that i will also install Exchange, WSUS ,ISA and possibly Sharepoint on a couple of old laptops i have borrowed from school for my two weeks holiday. Any tips?

I have read that it is not good practice to have Exchnage installed on a DC. We have this set up but it was only because we had no alternative. I am new to exchange and have been looking around today because our NM can't be arsed because the LEA set it all up but now there is no support. This may be a silly wquestion to for me i have very little DC/AD knowledge. If i go to a user on the Exchange box AD i can see ther email tab and view the details. If i go to the same use on the other nonexchange DC i see no email tab for the user. Now i mainly use 2003 admin pak install of AD on my XP box to administer AD but i do not get the email tab on that either. Is this correct or do i need to install something else on my XP box to be able to view the email tabs offs user in AD? Sorry if this is a daft question.

Is the recycle bin part of a roaming profile? Does it delete the contents on log off or does it stay as part of the profile.?

@Geoff Excuse for for possibly asking a daft question but.....We have 2 DC's but only one has DNS, our DC running DNS takes an age (at least 10 Min's) to log do the networking log on bit as well. Do i need to set up DNS on the second DC and point the first DC to it?

We have around 5 female staff members getting married in the next month or two. I know some of them will be keeping their maiden name for school but other won't. I know that user names can be changed but how does this affect exchange? If i change a user name to the new married name how does this affect, permissions, group memebrships, exchange accounts/detaisl/address's Can you give ne advice please. Sorry if my questions are basic but i have not been a school tech long and the guy over me is no help at all and would rather ignore things than keep everything running smoothly.
