I have been asked to put his on certain machines in one school. I have downloaded the software and it is an .exe application. Has anyone repackaged this to an msi. I want to deploy this through GPO and wondered if anyone one else uses it or had deployed it?

Can some one tell how to set this up and also the benifits of it. I have a 2003 server witth 2 x 1gb NIC.s. One of the nics is not in use the other has a static IP. SOmeone asked me to look into this and i dont really know much about it.

Can some one give me a idiot proof guide on how to monitor the traffic over a school day to our file server. I know 2003 has monitoring tools you can set up but i have never done it or used it. Or point me to a few helpful sites as i don't have the foggiest when it comes to doing this.

Here is how we got round it We found that the software needs to right to around 5 folders on the c:drive. One of these is the C:\windows folder. So we could not enable this for all users. We have two small suites used just for SEN and when they use this software they are monitored by staff. SO, we set up a user with account details of Dyslexia and password *****. We tie down the log on time of this account all the time, unless the SEN dept tell us when they want to do testing, we then only give it an hour slot to log on. They kids log on to network with this account and the member of staff adds the user through the software and then the kid does the test, The staff then pull the report off at the end. The user Dyslexia is given write permission to the folders in question by us through a GPO. It all works well snow for us but is not an ideal set up but we just needed to get them up and running.

I have a vbscript that runs in a Computer Config>scripts>start up. It deletes all local profiles apart from Administrator and All Users. We run it now and then to clear up any rogue profiles left behind. I have set GPO to delte and roaming profiles on log off but you always get the odd one left on if the kids have just turned the pc off at the wall etc. PM me if you want a copy.

Am i doing something wrong...? O downloaded a couple off Geoff's mirror and they downloaded really quickly at around 1mb speed. I did one of ht history ones and also the news one. Trouble is when i go to extract the zip files it says there s no files to extract or is corrupt. Should i be renaming the file extension or am i missing something here?

I've had a issue today where that when random users login in random rooms sometimes not all the mapped drive map. It is not specific to any one in particular or any room its random. I know there could be up to 400 people logging on on the hour every hour but i don't know of many other people having problems. The logon scripts are vbs and i wondered if there is any setting in GPO that makes the logon wait or delay for the scrip to run. Any ideas?

What a bout doing the MCDST as the elective for the MCSA? I know its two exams but then again you've already studied to pass the 271 and as you say you have been working in XP for years the 272 should not take much time to prepare for? Just a suggestion.

Command Post In relation to the above post, I have manually set deny permissions on cmd.exe and command.com for the pupils and it solves the problem above. Is there a vbscript that can be run on login script that changes the permissions on this file?

Is there a way to install the R2 MMC's on a XP workstation so you can run them from there instead of logging onto the server?

How do you set this up?

Right, an update today. The command prompt and run command are blocked in GPO, and the setting to stop command or bat files is enabled as well, they have even have all vbs log on scripts to keep this working. They have no access to the c:drive at all. The kids have a mandatory roaming profile and they are saving this file to their desktops which found weird has they have no access to the c:drive. Roaming profiles are set not o be cached and do clear when they log off. BUT this is what i noticed, when the user logs on it creates a temp profile on the local computer. While they are logged on i checked the security permissions of the temp profile and they have full control, so this is why they can save temporarily to the c: drive in the documents and settings/desktop folder. Should this happen? Should the temp profile have full control for the user. Please help .....?

I did this today, just seems a pain having to either go back to the server or log onto another pc and remote the server.

AJ i am studying for this at the mo...can you give me any advice on the exam...easy/hard anything in there that surprised you? How long did you study/prepare for, what materials did you use?

On one of my visits to a year 8 class today the teacher pointed out a little problem that she was worried about, The kids are opening notepad, typing command.com and then saving the file as a .bat file. This worried me a little is there a way this can be stopped? The run command is removed in GP and i am sure that i read R2 can stop these files from being saved. Suggestions please?

I have been to a primary today and have come across a RIS problem. I have only used RIS a few times and it has been normally to image a new room or re-image a room after the machines have been deleted from the domain. This morning i started re-image a suite of 20 PC's I went back lunch time and 3 had failed. I went to re-image them again and when i came to give them the same machine ID it refused to let me. It came up with a error saying that the user account i was using could not or did not have the rights to rename the account. Well first thing , I was logged on as the domain administrator account to use RIS and secondly i was giving the computer the same name again. I googled and read about delegation of control on OU's but i thought as i was using the domain administrator account to add the computers i would not have a problem. Any one else had a problem?

I have been into a primary school today and some staff have complained to me that they cannot download anything from the Internet. I checked GPO and found that it was set to not allow any downloads. The school has MS 2000 Proxy server. I checked the Proxy server and all it seems to be configured to do is Cache, give a weekly report on usage and block certain websites. I have not much experience with Proxy 2000, I know you can probably set it to allow certain downloads. Now i also know that GPO can do this( i think) Can some one help set it in GPO so i don't have to spend time working out the Proxy Server. I know i can let them download stuff but can i only allow certain file extensions or can i allow all and stop certain extensions. I would really like to do it in GPO. I am only a junior tech but because of the NM illness i am going out to more and more schools and having to learn very quick.

What about updating hte schema, I have a AD which is all x32 2003 servers. I am about to put a x64 server in the mix. Suggestions?

sSo even though you put a x64 version in to a x32 OS it still let you install it?

So you are saying that the R2 discs can be x32 and x64? So there is not just one R2 disc?
