I have a Dell Reinstallation cd kit. It has server 2003 x64 OS and a second disc with R2 on it. Is the disc pure R2? If so can i use this disc to install R2 on another domain in a different school. They have paid for the R2 disc but have not received the discs yet and i wondered if i can use the Dell disc instead of waiting. The other domain server in the other school is x32

Does any one have a script that can be run on all the XP Clients on our domain that will change the local administrator accounts password. We have been using the same password on all the clients for a long while now and i would like to change it on all our clients (Which are all XP)

I have been playing about with a few custom answer files of unattended installs. I have nearly cracked it but there is just a couple of things i need to know if i can change? When the pc boots from PC, i have to tell it about the partition and also tell it to from a NTFS/quick and then off it goes, What can i put into my answer file so it just creates one partition, ie the whole drive, and does NTFS by default. The other problem is when it boots into windows the first time, I have to click next, then choose the 'protect my computer now with security options. then tell it to skip the modem part then add a user name. What do i need to do to make this all automated. Here is a copy of the relevant parts of my .sif file. Has anyone noticed any of there icons change after installing I IE7 and Media Player 11? I had a custom shortcut to a website on my desktop and that has now changed to the small icon which is normally displayed in the address bar next to the url. I have manually changed it back but every time i go tot the website it changed again. Also since installing Media Player 11 i have noticed that all of my AVI icons have changed. I think this may be to do with another bit of software that has taken over the icon. I have done the 'Open With' and 'makes this the default application' but still no icon change. Anyone notice anything or is it just me?

I have been asked by one of our large secondary schools to look in to implementing VLANS. I normally only help out at primary schools but one of the senior techs is off long term sick at the moment and i am going into secondaries. I am going to be honest here and say that i am not experienced enough to be dealing with most of the secondaries as i am still finding my feet in IT Support. I have no idea about VLANS or as i was asked to setup or split the current DHCP scope into VLANS. I don't have a clue, i would like too so i can help out but i need some help. Can some one help me here with an idiot proof explanation or point me to some useful websites?

Can anyone help with any info about BSF and Birmingham schools? I am thinking of looking for a job as a tech in a Birmingham school because it will be easier to commute than where I am based now. My only concern is all the rumours about BSF. I know no one really knows too much about this yet but I just wondered if anyone who works in a B'ham school had heard any thing at all about the prospects of BSF in Birmingham.?

I have been reading about disk quotas because one of the Primary Schools heads has asked me to look into bringing it in his school. The current set up is all the users home directories are on one server split into year groups. The server is very old and slow and a new one is currently being purchased (should arrive soon). From what i can gather Quotas need to be in place on the drive before the users files are put on there ( i know if you implement quotas on a current drive that holds the home directories then it does not take into account the current files they have saved, which seems a bit pointlles) I wondered what could be possible to set up on the new server. If i set up Quotas on the drive of the new server and add all the users into the quota, can i then, 1, Copy/restore from back up/ move all the current users home directories to the new drive on the new server? 2 Will this work so that the users folders will be picked up by the quota? 3. Is there any other way to do this? I know i could come in with a problem if i set the original quota to low and some users folders will not then copy over. Can you set the Quota high and then once moved all of the folders lower the quota? I have never worked with Quotas and would like to hear some feed back from you experts please. Especially people who have moved from a none Quota drive to a Quota drive.

Well i never, i did not know you could do a admin install of this software. How would you do this? (sorry if i appear a little dense on this subject) Another little question......i have got AcvtiveStudio2 on staff laptops that is part of the image. If i create a admin install of the latest version with drivers and then deploy via GPO will it update the laptop by over installing/upgrading or will it provide a clean install( which means it will have two versions on there?

I want to make the most of the new feature in R2 which if file screening. I know if i install it now on our file server it will only affect new files that are saved to heir home directories. But my question is, I plan to move one of our primary schools home directories folders from off their old file server to a new one which has just been purchased. The new server has far more storage space. I was wondering if....i set up a folder called Homedirs, set up the file screening templates to what i want,then copy all the old users areas to this folder will the screening take place as i copy them across. I would then run a vbs script to set all the permission correct. I did think of restoring from back up but i doubt if the file screening would pick any thing up from a back up restore. Suggestions or ideas to my scenario please?

I found the below on a Server 2003 website. what i want to know in simple terms is this. 1.If i want to upgrade to R2 can i just install R2 on the print server which is just a member server. 2. If not do i have to update the schema first on one of the DC (with the FSMO roles) before i can add R2 onto any server. 3. I understand that some of the new functions can be used with R2 without udpdating the schema? Have o got this correct or not? When you extend the schema, you do not have to upgrade your existing domain controllers to Windows Server 2003 R2; they can continue to run Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003. Note, however, that Identity Management for UNIX must be installed on a Windows Server 2003 R2 domain controller. DFS Replication Service and Print Management Console can run on any computer running Windows Server 2003 R2. You must also extend the schema the first time that you upgrade an existing domain controller to Windows Server 2003 R2 or you install Active Directory on a computer running Windows Server 2003 R2 to make it a domain controller. You must extend the schema before you perform either of these actions for the first time in an existing forest. If you install Active Directory on a computer running Windows Server 2003 R2 to make it the first domain controller in a new forest, you do not have to extend the schema. The schema extension occurs automatically as the forest is created.

We have a primary school that has a server running 2003 (its an oldish server), From what i can gather from the people at the school (the old part time tech left and has not been too helpful when contacted since) that the raid was configured with 5 disc, 4 in the raid and one as a hot swap. A drive in the raid went down and the hot fix drive took over as it should. An LEA tech came in and swapped the faulty drive out, but from what i can gather he did not add it as a hot fix but added it to the raid to extend it. I know very little about raid at the moment so need some advice. I went in to Computer Mg-mt on the server and noticed a extra disk which is showing up as not initialized. I initialised it and the right clicked it for the options. I get 'Convert to Dynamic' or 'Convert to GPT' All the disc in Compmgmt show as basic, What do i need to do now. Is there a way to add the extra space to the raid or not? What are my options? Please keep your answers/instructions as basic as possible as i have no Raid experience. By the way it is Intel Software Raid.

Right, i dropped a right one today. I was supposed to delete a old member of staff from AD today but deleted the old one by mistake. I hve check Exchange system manger and the mail box is still in htere mailbox store. What i want to know is a idiot proof guide to getting it all back working agai, I know i can add another user with exactley the same name but how do i go about getting that new user topick up the mailbox. Can some one give me a idiot proof guide to get me out of the sh*t.

I have read several post on Microsoft's VLE platform. I would like to install Sharepoint on a test server on our domain. I know there are beta versions of 2007 out at the moment but i do not want to use them yet. I would like to install the current version so i can find a lot of resources to help me o nth net. I am currently unsure on how/where/what for on how to install. Where do i get the software from? What should i be installing? What would the correct procedure be? If i install it on a test server but join the server to our domain will be doing any arm to our set up if i remove it later. I am new to this and could do with a little help.

I was just wondering what you all use/prefer to use for your log on scripts? Do you use .vbs, .bat, cmd etc? DO you use a mixture or do you stick to one file type and if so why? After visiting a couple of our primary schools i noticed they all use different, (depending on who set them up)

I am not even sure if this is possible. One of our depts has asked us to set up a folder on the network that pupils can save documents to forte subject only. They want staff to be able to have 'Full Control' (easy) But they want pupils to have write access but not modify(so as soon s they save the file they can no longer edit it. Also they would like that only the user who has saved the file can open that file and not any other pupils. We have tried several settings for the NTFS security but cant seem to get ti right(don't even know if it is possible) What would you recommend?

I think i have read about this before on here but i can't seem to find it. I have had a couple of issues over the last few days with RIS. It has happened on 2 different sorts of pc's. I have gone to re-image a pc and get a Blue Screen error complaining od Duplicate Ip Address or IP address currently in use. I have checked DHCP and i cant find a duplicate, I also find that if i leave the pc off for a few hours it then works fine. I have tried removing the PSU, resetting BIOS etc ans it still keeps getting-ht duplicate ip address blue screen. Does any one know what causes this or an explanation/way round it?

I have been asked togo and help set up a new server for one of our Primary feeder schools. I have checked the spec and it is a R2 2003 server that is coming in. So am i right in thinking that before i can join the server to the domain i need to update the schema? If so i put the disk in the curent server 2003 DC and follow the MS KB instructions for updating hte schema, then I should be able to join the new R2 server to the domain? Is my procedure correct?

I have been using RIS more this term and all is going well. I have always added the pc fresh and never done anything where by creating PC names before hand. I went to a pc today and it was corrupt so i started to re image it, with the same name etc. But it would not let me add it. It said i did not have privilege to change the name it already was registered with in AD. I was giving it the same name, and also using the domain administrator user account to do it. IS this right.? I though you could even prestage names but if i can even add the same pc back in with the same name due to a re image, surely it will have the same ris id? Can some one please explain to a novice.
