Are Microsoft bidding for any of the managed service contracts in schools?

We let no one in our office/server room apart from Heado of ICT adn the techs. A key i slocked in the safe for emergencies which the Head/Business Manager have access only to.

When i am having a conversation in Windows Live Messenger i get delay from when i finish typing to hitting send. Its weird, when i type it is in real time but after hitting send/enter there is around a 3 second delay on the text appearing in the conversation box. The delay seems to be only at my end as well because the conversations i have the people reply sometimes before it appears in the screen. Any ideas?

I went into a school today that is running several SQL 2000 databases. I noticed in the ENterprise Manager that one of them had got the word 'suspect' under it and it did not list the contents of the database like all th eothers did. What is the problem and what can i do? ( I know nothing about SQL at all)

Can someone point me to some reading for this. I know nothing about this at all and keep hearing people mention it all over the place. What triggered my thoughts off is that a techie from another school said he had several SQL databases configured as a virtual server spread across 3 servers. He said if one goes down no one ever notices which gives him time to get it up and runnig nagain. Not got a clue on this.

I have created a unattended XP disc for simple machine installs. I have tried it out on a couple of PC's and a laptop and it works well. I have come to try try It on a second laptop and it just wont boot. It come s up with the error that its @No Emulation'. Now i have googled this and points that i have o burned the disc correctly. But if this was the case i would not have been able to boot the other machines that i have successfully set up. This laptop in question is around 3 years old so i can't understand why it don't work. Does anyone know of any issues with this?

If only they all could do this instead of around 50% of them

I went to a secondary school today who have their own NM but he is off long term sick. I was just checking certain things on the DC which does DHCP and DNS when i noticed that the DHCP lease duration was set to one hour..???? Now tell me i am wrong but i thought the default setting was 8 days. I have no idea why it was set to this or even if the NM knows. I changed it today to 3 days for the time being because this is the next time Will go into the school again. Was under the impression that having the lease set to 1 hour would cause increased DHCP traffic on the network, especially has this is a situation where everyone logs on on the our every hour. Am i correct in thinking this? If so what sort of increase in traffic would this cause in 600 client network?

I have been thinking of getting one of these for my iPod. Does anyone know what sort of range these transmitters have? i.e if you were sitting in one car, would the car next to you pick the signal up such as on a car park?

We have quite a lot of DHCP reservations that i am toying with the idea of restructuring them all. We currently have all the servers, wireless AP's, printers and all the switches which all have reserved Ip in our range. This is becoming a pain now as there are so many. What is the best way to deal with this? Should we/could we have all our switches in a different ip range to our own network? Can we do anything with your printers Ip? I guess the AP's would have to be on our range or at least on the range of our other switches? What is the best thing for this?

I have a primary school where they have certain drives mapped on a log on script for the users and this works fine. Also the users have H:as their home directory in 'user properties' and this maps the H: drive. The problem i am having in school is that on random times during the day the H:drive does not map. I have no idea why this happens and my only conclusion is traffic generated when pupils log in on the hour every hour. I seem to remember there is a setting in GPO that you can turn on that tells it to wait for drives to be mapped(or similar). Does anyone know of this? Or do you know of anything else that could be causing this? The server that holds the Home Directories is only around 6 months old.

I need to find a way of putting messages on desktops of all curriculum computers. We currently use Active desktop and we change the pictures every half term. I was wondering if their is a way i can have something that display a different message on the desktop every day? I know i can create .jpegs and manually change them every day but his would be a pain in the a*se. Has anyone got any suggestions on how to do this? Or to do something similar.
