Could you let staff have roaming profiles and stop them saving to the dektop? If so how would you do it with GPO settings?

It was the Intel Pro set. As soon as i removed it away it went.

Found this, willl et you all know. Hello, I had exactly the same problem and believe me you arent the only one... HOWEVER, I found two solutions, the first of which fixed my computer. You also may have been expeiriencing annoying slow shutdowns, I certaintly was. This sample.exe issue is usually caused after the Intel PROset has been installed, this is supposed to be a program made for configuring Intel PRO wireless network cards and I believe that most people install it while troubleshooting a problem in their wireless network. To stop sample.exe "End Program" messages on logoff/shutdown and improve system performance, the intelPRO set must be installed. Click start --> Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs and run the uninstallation of the Intel PROset. If you are 100% sure that you do not have the Intel PROset installed then chances are you have a virus named either W32.Nimda.E@mm or W32.Nimda.A@mm either way they are quite dangerous and have the ability to allow access to your files from a hackers computer and degrade your computers performance dramatically.

I have a service/software that does not end correctly when i log off or shut down. I get the 'End Now' box pop up. I f end it by pressing the 'End Now' button it does work. But i am trying to pinpoint what it is that is causing it. On the End Now box the offending application/software is just called 'Sample' I have no idea what this is and have tried certain MSCONFIG stuff but with no luck. I just wondered if anyone have any ideas on the 'Sample@ error?

We have 12 new Toshiba A200 laptops which have just been opened and software added to. The trouble is that if you insert any USB device (printer, USB stick tested so far) the laptops blue screen, crash and then reboot. We have tried this on 3 different ones at the moment and they all do it. Any ideas as i need to let staff have these tomorrow.

I had 12 Dell 500 laptops today to re-image with RIS. All laptops were purchased at the same time so all same spec. I built an image and set about deploying it. I had got up to 7 imaging and then started to image 8 when it complained it did not have the correct NIC drivers???????????. It did the same on the 9th then 10th of which then i gave up. When the first 7 finished imaging I tried the remaining ones again and away they went without no problems or complaints about the NIC driver???????????? Is this weird or what or can someone explain this?

I have been into a small primary school today (not one of my normal ones, usual staff off long term sick) and they are using redirected start menus for staff. Worked fine for a long while but more and more of the staff now have laptops. The issue is that if staff install software while away from the network then they cannot see the shortcuts when on the network. I know i can add the shortcuts tot he programs folder on the network but with different staff from different subjects installing all sorts of software this is becoming a right mess. Some users get icons grey out (because they are not installed) and it look bad now. If i stop the redirection and remove the setting from GPO what will happen. Will they just get nothing or if the setting is removed will they pick up whats in the 'all users' folder on the local laptop?

I have had someone come to me this morning with a load of Publisher 97 files she created ages ago. Now, of course they are using Publisher 2003 now and a load of the documents are not displaying correctly becasue it complains that some of the fonts are missing. Is there a quick fix/work around for this becasue she has loads of this publisher 97 files and does not want to re-create them. She has tried the option of substituting the fonts option but soem do not work.

Right, I tried thison a test VMware set up last night and had mixed results. I got the LDAP path to change with RenDom without any problem. I did not have much luck with XDR-Fixup for renaming the Exchange server. I did reboot the clients twice as it told me to but they did not pick up the domain ( i gave up then as it was late) The live network will not be as complicated as this. I have only one DC at the moment and around 100 clients. Still think i won't do it though.

Not too sure about this so thought i would ask. I tend to go to Primary schools mostly and not many secondary schools. I was a a primary yesterday and wanted to chech the DNS on one of the DC's. I noticed there were not Reverse Look Up Zones configured. The school has two DC's and around 120 clients. Should this be configured? What is the general rule of thumb on this? If the school had say 500 clients would it be configured then? Not to up on DNS i' afraid.

I have installed RIS on a 2003 SP1 DC. I can image clients no problem but i dont get the option to choose the client name. On other RIS server domains i have always had this option but on this one it just uses the username to create the account. How can i get it to let me choose a name instead of auto generating one?

Just to refresh my memory about RIS and additional drivers. I have installed a base image on the RIS server and need to create an image to for a couple of computers. I need to add the NIC drivers to the image of the computers in question. I have cheated before and just dropped the driver’s files into the i386 folder and it all seems to work but I would rather do it correctly this time on this primary school new RIS server. I know all about the $OEM$\$1 set up but have a few questions just to clear things up. Do I need to add the path to the base image? IF id do is it then necessary to add the OEM path to my new image answer file? Also if I have to add more than one NIC driver should I just dump them all in the NIC folder or should I add a extra path ie; $OEM$\$1\drivers\nic\HPPC? Please advise and refresh my memory.

I have a few questions about the LDAP path of a domain. If the LDAP path has been set up on a new domain as ABC.Schoolname.sch.uk why is it that the clients show ‘NETWORK’ at the logon on prompt and not ‘ABC’? I have not seen this before and always thought that the first part of the LDAP path would be what the clients displayed? Also is it possible to change this path once AD has been set up?

I have RIS set up ona oldish server that is going to be replaced. I have the new server coming in late this week. How/Can i move th eimages from one server to another. i think/Read that if i set up Remote Installtion service on the new server first, then restore my images from the other server via NT Backup this should work? Have any of you done this yet?

I have been into a school today that is in a bit of a pickle. This junior school used to be a RM CC3 network. It has around 80 clients. A part time technician moved the school away from RM network to a vanilla install. The trouble is the network is in a complete mess as the guy who set it up was not experienced enough hence the mess. The staff and limited students can lo gin to the vanilla network but there is no GPO security and the permissions on folders are ridiculous. I have a spare server which i thought about building a separate domain, set ting up DHCP and DNS correctly. Then importing all user accounts (or even setting up from new with scripts) and getting a fresh start. I could then use the current server to add as a second DC. I could build this network with out disrupting the current one then just swap over during half term and they would be ready to go with the new domain after the half term holiday. Is this feasible, pitfalls etc?

I have got to install Exchange onto a domain for the first time. I have tried this in a test set up and have had noproblems. What i want to know is this, Is there a way to mas assign all staff with an email adress (Exchnage only being used internally) or do i have to go through each one , one by one, Can this be scripted or done on mass, If i added all the users from scratch to the domain with DSADD can the email address be done this way as well?

I have a room at home (spare bedroom) which is sort of a office. I have pc, laptop, xbox and PlayStation and i want to be able to have thee all linked upt o the Internet. I currently just put the cable modem directly into the one i use but this is becoming a right pain, I just want a basic cable/dsl router for my broad band connection so i can keep all four devices plugged in and keep my cabling tidy. I am on Virgin BB. Can anyone recommend a good one, I also need to mention that i do not need or want wireless router.

DO you only get the £10 discount on your first order or do you get £10 discount everytime you use Google Checkout on Ebuyer? ( I know you have to spend £30 or more to get it)

I am thinking of assigning disk quotas. Trouble is i have already got 500 users home driectories on the server and i have read that if i assign the quotas ow they wil not take into accoutn the current space each individual user is using? Is this correct and if so how do i get around the situation so i can enable quota s now?
