  1. I haven’t had formal training in it and I’m sure I don’t do it properly but most of the time, I don’t need to look at the keyboard to type.
  2. Are you stuck on Windows 2012? With 2016, there is a first party HTML5 interface available for RDP sessions that works very well. It’s very easy to set up; put in an RDS gateway, run a couple of PowerShell commands and that’s it.
  3. Is this a case of the app actually needing these permissions or is the developer being lazy and just ticking all of the boxes in the development environment and never going never them?
  4. If you only use it to manage your workstations, assuming that the SCCM (Well, MECM now) CAL and a license to run a server for it still included in your Microsoft agreement then yes, there won't be any change. If, however, you use it to manage your servers like I do as well, I want to know if there are licensing implications in that case. Previously, if you wanted to run SCCM on a server, you had to buy separate System Center licenses for your servers, they're not covered under your OVS or EES licence.
  5. So, with the latest release of SCCM, it no longer appears to be a System Center product. They have rebranded as Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager and put it under the Microsoft Endpoint Manager banner, along with Intune and a few other odds and ends. What I want to know is, what implications does this have for licensing, if any? SCCM used to be part of System Center so if you bought enough System Center licenses to cover your servers for SCOM, SCVMM, SCDPM etc, you could also manage them with SCCM. Now that ConfigMgr has been separated out, is this still the case? Will there be a separate license cost for MECM on servers down the line?
  6. Dell Latitude or XPS systems with Dell Thunderbolt docks. We’ve got a load of them and they work well.
  7. Ours are hosted by Greenhouse School Websites. I wasn't involved in the selection or design process but I've had to contact their support a few times for things like DNS changes and certificate issues and they've generally been helpful. PM me if you want a URL for our site.
  8. One bit of feedback about the annual leave entitlement: unless you’re bundling back holidays into that, 28 days is more than I get. You should put an option below that, 20-27 I guess. I get 25 days.
  9. Not very much (Frankly, from what I’ve seen of Lynx, it’s awful) but the point is that it comes with the boards so you’re licensed to use it. Without either having to use open source software of doubtful provenance or paying out for ActivInspire or Smart Notebook, you’re stuck with it
  10. At the very least, I would separate out the DC/DHCP/DNS and file server roles as you suggest and create a new VM for SIMS, using either a P2V converter or redoing it from scratch. Just one thing, you will be putting all your eggs in one basket so make sure that your backups are good
  11. Went to see it last night. It was... alright, I suppose. I enjoyed it for the most part but it did feel like it was dragging on a bit. Didn’t help that Odeon’s so called premium seats were rock hard and incredibly uncomfortable. I suspect I’m probably not in the target audience for this any more...
  12. Well, it says in the article that the design is for public toilets and that the designer came up with the design when he went to a public toilet that had a queue and that quite a lot of people who came out of the stalls were holding their phones. He thinks that it'll cut down on queuing times because people won't want to bog browse.
  13. Anyway, in answer to your question, not unless you're talking about your Christmas lunch's roast potatoes or something.
  14. Are you in the Grocers Guild?
  15. This is pretty much how we work as well, with the single forest and domain per cluster. However, we have P2P links between all of our sites and two of our larger academies have internet connections which we balance our schools across. We can route everyone out over one internet connection should one of them go pear shaped.
  16. You can install SQL updates without having to detach databases etc. That said, it's sensible of course to make sure that your backups are in order before you update and to make sure that no-one is attempting to use SIMS while you're doing your work. Updating to SP3 then the latest CU will be fine.
  17. Because the first time the program is run, it needs activating and the activation routine writes a couple of files in the c:\programdata folder, for which it needs admin access. Just what that couldn’t be part of the installation routine, I don’t know but that’s why it needs to be run as an admin. Please note, I’m not saying that this is a good thing or that I agree with what they’re doing or how they’re doing it, I’m just trying to explain why it’s like what it’s like.
  18. You may as well go the whole hog and make sure you have the latest cumulative update after you get SP2 on there as well: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4527378/cumulative-update-11-for-sql-server-2016-sp2
  19. SQL service packs include all previous updates so you will be able to install SQL 2016 SP2 directly without having to install earlier service packs. A list of SQL build numbers can be found here: https://buildnumbers.wordpress.com/sqlserver/
  20. I'm purely an infrastructure guy, I do very little frontline IT these days so I'm coming at this from that POV. Redundant 10Gbe links on dark fibre between all of our sites New servers with all-flash storage New PCs Interactive screens to replace the projectors and whiteboards Some decent chairs in our satellite offices I'm sure there's more but that's what comes to mind immediately. /edit a decent firewall and filter as well!
  21. @talksr, did you manage to resolve this? I've just been asked to install this software and it's bringing up a UAC prompt for me. I'm not about to give teachers local admin rights on their machines so I'm wondering if you've managed to work around it? Thanks
  22. The problem that I've got with Bobby in S2 is that she's a block of wood who can't act for toffee...
  23. I've tried to get into the Expanse television series but for some reason I just can't. I love the books but something about the series leaves me cold. Could be the casting, I think they cast Naomi and Miller quite well, Alex isn't bad but Amos especially is wrong. He's described as a tall, muscular, intimidating behemoth in the books, I always saw him like Jayne in Firefly, but in the television series they've got someone who, well, isn't.
  24. I’ve found two jobs through the posts that @elsiegee40 puts up and three overall on Edugeek in general. Thanks to her posting those, my income has increased quite substantially over the last few years so yes, thank you[emoji4]
  25. What roles do you see running on masOS? Apple’s server app is all but deprecated and only has Profile Manager in it these days. You wouldn’t use macOS for DHCP, DNS or as a directory server. You wouldn’t use it as a web server. You might use it as a file server if you’re desperate to use AFP as a file transfer protocol but Macs talk SMB pretty well these days so you don’t really need it for that. About the only Mac specific role these days is the update caching server
