Coronavirus: General discussion (see opening post for rules)
Norphy replied to Dos_Box's topic in General Chat
A probably stupid but nonetheless genuine question: Seeing the news pieces about Boris Johnson and Jo Whiley’s sister getting the vaccine today, I’m wondering, why does someone who’s already had the virus need the vaccine? Surely they’ve already got antibodies and having the vaccine won’t have much benefit for them? Not saying they shouldn’t have it, just wondering if there’s any benefit? -
OK, try this instead. Just looking back at one of my scripts where I'm using the same method you're using there.. Try this instead: $group = Import-csv "D:\test\group1.csv" $UserInfo = @() $Users = Get-AdUser -Filter * | Select-Object GivenName, Surname,UserPrincipalName #Get-AdUser -Filter {givenName -eq 'joe' -and surname -eq 'bloggs'} ForEach($User in $group) { $data = $Users | where-object {$_.givenName -eq $user.givenName -and $_.surname -eq $User.surname} $Object = New-Object -TypeName System.Object $Object | add-member -MemberType NoteProperty -name "Firstname" -value $data.GivenName $Object | add-member -MemberType NoteProperty -name "Surname" -value $data.Surname $Object | add-member -MemberType NoteProperty -name "UserPrinicpalName" -value $data.UserPrincipalName $UserInfo = $UserInfo + $Object } $UserInfo | Export-Csv -Path d:\test\output.csv -NoTypeInformation

It seems to be a real crapshoot when it comes to PXE booting these things. It's dependant on the model of Geobook you've got and the ethernet adapter itself. In the end, we built most of ours from USB sticks, but even that had its downsides as the USB stick had an annoying habit of taking device 0 then getting wiped by our task sequence. We had a lot of fun with these :\ Taking them to the clay pigeon shooting range and using them as targets is still my preferred option.

Will Access Points ever need two data points?
Norphy replied to kennysarmy's topic in Wireless Networks
It won't hurt. Possibly NBaseT might be more more widespread as time goes on, negating the need for an extra cable but considering it's only four classrooms, the extra cost of running those cables will be next to nothing and might well come in useful in future. -
Yes, it's a trade off. Everything is. You trade capacity against redundancy against resiliency against performance. Use RAID 10? Lose half your capacity. Use RAID 6? Slow write performance. Use RAID 5? Risk loosing the array entirely if a disk fails. Use JBOD/RAID 0? Lose the entire array when a single disk fails. Don't use any kind of RAID/storage combination technology? Risk losing an entire disks worth of footage which may be required at a critical juncture. There is no right or wrong answer, everything depends on circumstances but given the potential risks, I would personally recommend using RAID of some description.

Two reasons that I can think of: 1) It might not matter 99 times out of 100, but that one time it does matter, it really matters. I wouldn't want to be the one to explain to the authorities that our CCTV recorder missed recording a serious assault because of a drive failure and using RAID or similar mitigates that. 2) It's more convenient to store stuff on a single large contiguous volume than it is to scatter it across 4/12/24/36/48 drives. You might not want to use hardware/software RAID, you might want to use something like ZFS or Storage Spaces to combine the drives but the end result is the same.

Well, he was 97 so not that much of a shock. Nevertheless, he was a huge part of my childhood, some of my happiest memories are of my dad, my brother and me sitting down to watch the Grand Prix and it just wasn’t the same after he retired. Very sad to see him go

1:1 Staff Laptops Vs Designated Class PC for whiteboard
Norphy replied to titch's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
The Dell TB16 docks that we have are horrific on their out of box firmware. The instant you get them out of the box, you have to update them otherwise you’d regret it. These things are only marginally smaller than a first generation Mac Mini. For what they do, they’re absurdly large. -
There is something very amusing about the concept of using an interface capable of 40,000,000,000bps for a port which can transmit at 115,200bps at best...
-
How many of these things are you looking to deploy? How big is your organisation? InstantOn stuff is pretty good, but it's designed for SOHO. I think there is a limit to how many devices you can manage in that portal, although I couldn't say how many exactly. I think they're still manageable without the internet portal by connecting directly to the switch.
-
Always On management portal? Do you mean InstantOn?

Suggestions for MAT filtering?

Can you tell us what the highly regarded system is, so that we don't recommend the same thing? -
You’re probably best going to someone like Upgrade Options who sell spares for Dell servers and storages. It probably won’t be cheap but you will at least get a drive with the right firmware.

Just finished Cobra Kai S3 It's as cheesy as hell, but it's still a lot of fun. Looking forward to what Season 4 brings.

I think the main advantage of the MBP over the Air is the active cooling system. The MBP will be able to work harder, for longer, without any kind of thermal throttling. Whether this is a factor for you is entirely dependant on what you're going to do with it, of course. It doesn't take long for the MBA to start throttling when under load, just a few minutes according to this Ars Technica review but if all you're going to do with it is use Office and browse the intartubes this won't be so much of an issue.
-
OK, let's look at this The base MBA comes with a slightly weaker GPU (7 cores instead of 8) The screen isn't quite as good, not as bright but both have the same colour gamut and have "True Tone" The MBP has slightly better battery life so probably has a bigger battery External IO appears to be the same, two Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 ports and a headphone jack Storage and RAM options are the same MBA is slightly thinner and lighter but there's not much in it. The MBP has the touch bar, as you've already said. So, is the touch bar, a slightly better battery and a slightly better GPU and probably less performance throttling worth £300 to you?

When I looked, pretty much the only one out there was the Huawei one provided by the lines of 3, Vodafone et al. Spec here: https://consumer.huawei.com/en/routers/5g-cpe-pro/. It does the job and I seem to remember it does have ports for external antenna. It is a consumer level piece of equipment though, and not only that you can’t put it into bridge mode so if you use it with Pfsense etc there will be double NATing.

The difference is, you need to authenticate the device for Apple Pay to work, either with the passcode or with Touch/FaceID Entirely dependant on the retailer, yes. They need to make sure their POS terminal is running the latest firmware and even then they can set arbitrary limits. Before the pandemic, even Tesco were limiting device payments to £30. I suspect that was because they were pushing their own rival payment service.
-
Not sure if this counts as political or not, so feel free to close if deemed so https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56263582 The Treasury has confirmed that the contactless payment limit is being raised to £100. Am I the only one who thinks that's way too high? £30 was about right, imo. It's understandable it got raised to £45 for the pandemic but the idea of having my card lifted from my wallet and suddenly being made £100 lighter without any further verification is not one I particularly like.

RoyalTS is in a similar vein. It supports RDP, SSH, Telnet, Hyper-V, ESXi, VNC and Teamviewer. It's pretty danged useful.

I don't know, there's something about the Expanse adaptation that doesn't do it for me. I like the books a lot and there are a couple of the actors who I think play their parts well (Naomi Nagata and Chrisjen Avasarala) but I found it hard going. The one that really gets me is Amos. The books describe him as a man mountain, hard as nails, completely badass and intimidating to look at. I always pictured him as looking a bit like Jayne from Firefly. The guy they got playing him... well he's not quite at the level of Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher but he's going down that road, if you see what I mean.
-
I'm looking forward to that. Pike and Spock were among the best parts of S2 of Discovery and Number 1 was criminally under-utilised. Strange New Worlds has a lot of potential and I'm hoping like hell it doesn't get squandered.

Coronavirus: General discussion (see opening post for rules)

I had the Pfizer one. I felt ok at first, apart from a sore arm, but after two or three days I came down with a headache and went between shivering and sweating profusely. Those are pretty common side effects according to the leaflet they have me. My partner had the same jab a couple of days later. She’s come down with a pretty nasty rash a few days later. -
[tv show] Pratchett's Watch series coming to the BBC
Norphy replied to Dos_Box's topic in TV & Movies
It's been transmitted on BBC America, it hasn't found its way here yet. Not by legal means anyway.
