Teams is one of those products which uses an agile development method; chances are what you saw was a bug in that particular build of the product that got fixed in an updated release. It probably wasn't anything you did and I expect there wasn't anything you could do to fix it apart from wait.

I've not been running it 100% of the time, but from what I've seen of it I feel that the start menu is yet another regression. It reminds me too much of the Windows 8 start menu, except that it's not full screen and it doesn't have live tiles. Otherwise, the pinned icons/separate all apps screen is very reminiscent of W8/8.1 and I don't like it. I don't mind its position on the task bar, it's the actual menu itself that's got worse. I mean, the Windows 10 start menu isn't brilliant, but at least it's one click to get to all of your apps and your pinned apps. And to head off the inevitable "Just use search" comments, Search is all very well and good if you know what you're looking for. Sometimes you don't, you might not be able to remember the name of the app that you want or you might be on a computer which doesn't belong to you and you might not know what's installed. Not to mention the fact that Windows search su-diddly-ucks.

NetSupport Notify Not free but pretty cheap.

Also - Build in Teams client in Windows 11. You can't sign into it with an organisational account. I mean, WTF? Separate versions for home and work accounts. Why? https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-teams-blog/introducing-chat-from-microsoft-teams-on-windows-11-for-your/ba-p/2809877

Yep. This is the first screen on the OOBE for the home edition when you're not connected to the internet. You can't get any further.
-
That only applies to the Pro version now apparently. Trying that with the Home version doesn’t let you proceed until you connect it to the internet.

Hmmm, High Fructose Corn Syrup. Just like Gramgram used to make!

OK, the workarounds related to the September 2021 patch are both the same and are what was mentioned earlier in the thread:
-
That's great. Have you got a link to that page and the workarounds?

Coronavirus: General discussion (see opening post for rules)
Norphy replied to Dos_Box's topic in General Chat
At this point, you have to wonder what their problem actually is? Are they actually against the vaccine or are they being pig headed because they're being instructed to take it? If it's the latter, they deserve to lose their jobs, frankly. -
Volume Shadow Copies - Used Space Isues & Confiusion
Norphy replied to CHiLL's topic in Windows Server 2019
The pirated videos were deleted and the owners of the files were disciplined. I kept an eye out for about a year afterwards and didn't see any repeat offensives, happily enough. When I'm talking about getting SMT backing, I'm not talking about removing illegal content, I'm talking about moving the types of content that CHiLL is talking about to a more suitable area and to enforce making the more suitable area the default place to store stuff like that. Otherwise it'll keep on coming back. -

I've had the same conversations with depressing regularity with a lot of people. One time, I even had to take it to SMT because a lot of morons had downloaded pirated films stored in the shared areas. How did I know they were pirated? They still had the bloody torrent name in the filename of the video. You may need to get SMT backing for this kind of thing to get it enforced, otherwise you'll be shouting at people again in three months time. -

The trouble with that is, how do you define the correct side of an argument? Whether it's justified or not, people are sceptical/scared/against it for $REASON$ and as far as they're concerned, they're on the correct side of the argument, no matter how detrimental it is to the rest of society. -

She's a pretty disgusting human being at the best of times, so it wouldn't especially surprise me if she's anti vaxx -
If you have something like Teams, you could have a meeting set up for the class, the student joins the meeting on the iPad and the teacher shares the screen? When they're doing the registers they just turn screen sharing off. So many possibilities here!
-
Actually, that's probably the simplest solution - a VNC server on the teacher's PC and a viewer on the iPad https://www.realvnc.com/en/connect/download/vnc/ or https://www.tightvnc.com/ or https://www.uvnc.com/ https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/vnc-viewer-remote-desktop/id352019548 I'm pretty sure most VNC servers can be set to view only.

Two questions: 1) Do you have a classroom management product like Impero or NetSupport School or something similar to that already? 2) If so, does it have to be an iPad that you give to the student? A lot of classroom management products like those have the ability to cast the teacher's screens to other computers. If the answer to 1 is "Yes" and 2 is "No", you could use $ClassroomManagementProduct to show the teacher's screen to a laptop that's sitting on the student's desk. Even if you don't have one, you could use Veyon - https://veyon.io/en/

Volume Shadow Copies - Used Space Isues & Confiusion
Norphy replied to CHiLL's topic in Windows Server 2019
You said it was essentially compression, not that it was like compression. Even then, I'd still argue that it's not like compression, just that it's another method of using less disk space. And I said that it does it on the block level rather than the file level. There are some dedup methods that work on the file level, such as Single Instance Store that Exchange Server used to use but they're more unusual these days. -

Deduplication isn't a compression method. Deduplication removes duplicate copies of data on a storage device. So if someone puts on a file called "Super fun happy time.jpg" and then copies it 500 times, the 499 duplicates are removed and replaced with a pointer to the original file instead. Therefore, it doesn't matter whether a file is compressed or not, if there are 500 duplicates of a jpg file, the other 499 will still be removed and the space will be recovered. That said, most file systems do this at the block level rather than the file level these days. Now, if you're enabling traditional on-the-fly compression on a folder and/or file system then yes, what you've said is right. You generally can't compress that that's already been compressed. If anything, the extra overhead of the additional compression format will make files larger. /edit it's worth mentioning that some of the tree sizing programs don't work properly on deduped volumes - There was a modified version of WinDirStat which enumerates duplicated disk space properly called WinDirStatDD /edit 2 Reading the rest of the thread, you need a more aggressive garbage collection policy on your deduplicated volume. When you delete a file, the space won't be recovered immediately. Run the following PS command: Start-DeDupJob -type GarbageCollection -volume d: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/deduplication/start-dedupjob?view=windowsserver2019-ps -
Which Dell dock do you have? I know that some of their older ones had proprietary mojo going on with their USB-C plugs but I think their newer ones should be ok. Might be worth looking into monitors with integrated docks as well, one less thing to keep powered on. Lenovo and Iiyama do good ones, I’m sure other manufactures do too. /edit The Dell D6000 is a DisplayLink based dock, which is essentially a graphics card attached to the USB port. They should work with anything, including computers without USB-C ports but they’re slower as USB graphics cards use a lot more CPU time. If your laptop has a USB-C port which can act as a DisplayPort, I’d avoid them.

Simple for Teachers IT Equipment booking system
Norphy replied to ImNotaRobot's topic in How do you do....it?
What are you booking out? Would Microsoft Bookings do the job? You'd need an Office 365 E3 license. -
Try this: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/hardware/218211-geo-geobook-1e-education-laptops-horrible-6.html#post1882704 I think the one you want is hdxsstemdoor in any case.
