  1. You might need to do things like install software, patches or even replicate them for others to use. An example is that we can let anyone in the school access the VM from wherever they are, it is quite neat - plus I don't need to go around to each machine to install the VM.
  2. Unless you're running 5 vm's, serving 1100 machines and have gigabit to the desktop.
  3. 10GBE but lots of virtual servers on each connection. Looks like it's using 5Gb/s right now, or something else is overloading.
  4. It's fine. Put them into a Firewalled "Student PC" network with really limited access, no network accounts and *much* easier to manage than local VM's.
  5. We just gave them administrator rights on windows machines over ovirt. Reboot == clean machine.
  6. Internet connection and a bunch of servers at the other end (VM's in school) is my lab.
  7. Thinking about it further I also agree that it is a bad metric. I included all of our BYOD's and they are maintenance free.
  8. 1 tech to 366 machines
  9. Not so much of a correction, Glacier is more for long-term backups. S3 AWS import is still a viable option.
  10. Amazon S3, Cloud Computing Storage for Files, Images, Videos
  11. Yes I agree, but the reality is that if a statement says "Jimmie should use X ipad app" then the school could be breaking the law if they don't provide the app on an ipad. The sucky thing is that the local authority experts who write the statements are not necessarily technology experts.
  12. I think you need to read the statements for the individual SEN students before you can make any suggestions. Some of our statements of educational need relate to specific "named" technology, so you'll need to make sure whatever you buy will fit in with the statement because the statement is a legal document.
  13. boots. I hate shoes/trainers.
  14. We used it in conjunction with RequestTracker, when we moved to Google apps we decided to combine the system into google groups. It wasn't for any lack of functionality, just it was another server to look after and I'm a firm believer in keep it simple and we didn;t really need all the extra functionality of RTFM/RT
  15. You only need to setup one and the others will install themselves over a pxe boot.
  16. Pi With screenly Screenly - Digital Signage for the Raspberry Pi
  17. Linux in a virtual machine is the best tool available for windows.
  18. Install Centos. Use them as "Kiosk" devices Manage them using Spacewalk.
  19. That is a pretty awesome explanation. So I'm guessing the real answer if I was being hardline about it is to steer clear and go for something like @dhicks suggests. The slacker answer being that they will probably 'work' but could cause longer term issues.
  20. Could someone explain this to me in a bit more detail please. My wifi works on 2.4GHz 802.11g (and on 5Ghz at 802.11a) If these devices are running on the same frequency, how are they not going to interfere with the operation of the wireless network? and how is the wireless network not going to overpower the devices>?
  21. Thanks. The link says so presumably, dongle or no it is going to interfere with the school wireless.
  22. Instinct says it uses an ad-hoc wireless.
  23. School want to get wireless tablet visualisers with bundled "slate tablet" things "Bundle Elmo L-12 Visualiser & CRA-1 Slate Bundle" According to the spec sheet they need to run over a 2.4GHz network http://www.chooseav.co.uk/prod_media/319711_1.pdf What are your thoughts about this if we have a central wifi network?
  24. another +1 for dia. been really good.
  25. They stopped supporting it more than 2yrs ago and gave 12month notice then. It's one of those 'running XP' situations.
