When logging on with RangerManager user account we are experiencing problems: 1) Start Menu is empty 2) Desktop is correct (as per Ranger Admin desktop policy for Rangermanager), but when accessing any icon we get the following error: 'Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.' 3) Slow response on accessing network resources 4) Unable to run any bat or exe file - error msg is as above (#2), although word, excel files open fine. Anyone with any ideas? Thanks

Thats what I asked you yesterday Danielson81 in point #1 using the same cable.... But the cable installer should have asked you what to do if the cable run wasnt long enough to terminate the socket in the correct place. Did you not show the installer the exact place you wanted them? Sounds like a planning/communication issue. Maybe you've got to put this down to experience and cough up the extra £75.00. We have been asked to install network points high up on the walls for both Wireless Access Points and Projectors so the installer may not have thought it as a strange place for the network points.

Depends on what you agreed with the installer. 1) If the sockets being moved were to use the original cable then theres always a possibility that theres not enough length to reach the new location. 2) However if they were running new cables from the network cabinet / switch to the new location then its down to the installer to measure the distance and use the correct length. Its not difficult for them the cable is marked so they can easily see the distance they need. Additionally the cable is supplied on a drum so there is no excuse for not getting the correct length - you just keep pulling it through until it reaches the correct location - prior to any cutting! Its not difficult... Only you will know which of the above was agreed, but if its #2 then simply dont pay and insist on them being re-run (I dont advise coupling cables togther). Alternatively high network points are ideal for Wireless Access Points (poe)!

You will ned to complete a Tax return. If you have any income that is not taxed at source, like rents or freelance earnings, you need to complete a tax return. It cant be paid to you as a 'GIFT' as suggested by someone in previous post as you are supplying a service. All earned income must be declared. Additionally all items purchased for the provision of the service you are supplying can be offset against the income to reduce the Tax liability. (i.e. software, computer, travel expenses etc) -keep good and accurate records! To be a sole trader, a partner, or a member of a limited liability partnership as an individual rather than a company, you must be self-employed - and registered as such with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). This does not mean that you can't also do other work as an employee, but the work you do for your own business must be done on a self-employed basis.

Background: Office client workstation will not connect to the server error: Logon Failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer workstation can ping server and vice versa, workstation can see server but cant connect. Same error on server when trying to access the workstation Investigations: Checking the server and theres a error in the logs: Windows cannot query for the list of group policy objects. Checking the Domain controller security policy -> security settings -> Local Policies -> User rights assignment I see that the policy 'Access this computer from the network' is blank. This I would expect to be populated (unless I'm mistaken) with Admin, aspnet, backup, everyone, power users, users etc. When adding these and applying the polciy change I get the following error: Security Templates: An extended error has occurred, failed to save \\school_name.admin\sysvol\school_name.admin\Policies\..... Thinking that the security database might be corrupy I've ran esentutl /g on %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb but this comes up clean. Anyone got an ideas what I can try next? THANKS

Is anyone experiencing difficulties with ERGO support - for a while now we have noticed that the level of support has slipped specifically in the following areas: Emails: no response to emails sent to [email protected] Phone calls: Never get to speak to a technician, as all on other calls and will "call you back" - Although they aren't calling back! Outstanding calls: Not being resolved before being closed off by Ergo Faulty Hardware - Now moved to a 3rd party (pge aftercare) who are not exactly rapid at turning kit around. Previously we had a good working relationship with Ergo, but it seems that several of the key support team have moved on. Is this just us, or are others experiencing similar (good or bad?). Thanks

Does it reply to a ping? What happens if you try without the port? i.e. http://10.150.121.254 If I remember correctly you can connect a vga monitor and a ps/2 keyboard into the rear of the server to access the admin pages. -
Email sent to you Mandy

One of my schools is wanting to replace all teacher desktops with laptops plus a docking station. The USB ones are cheaper and more flexible in use than the standard docking stations that tend to be rather large and quite heavy, and more annoyingly, proprietary to a specific make or even model of laptop. Has anyone used one, and if so what are yourexperiences good or bad and recomendations? Thanks

I'm trying to setup a user with outlook on their laptop and link this in with RM EasyMail. I can receive emails ok from RM Easymail but cant send - SMTP setting issues (Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (STMP) email server). I've tried the various settings that I know work but still not joy. To complicate the issue this user is employed by another school so uses that schools rm easymail account, however their office is on another school campus. This dept. has its own server and broadband connection separate from the school. Everyone else uses exchange. I'm tried the ESSEX LEA who tell me to call BT who say its not them...... Anyone know of a solution?

To remove a password from the Toshiba units, you need a special adapter/dongle that gets attached to the LPT port before powerup. After the unit is turned on with the adapter connected, the password is automatically removed. Available on ebay for a few quid.

I had a similar problem at a clients - turned out that the router has at some point previously been configured to act as DHCP server (rather than the 2003 SBS PDC) and the ip addresses for the failing workstations where still in its routing tables. Cleaning down these tables solved the problem for me. Try rebooting the router.

I have the same problems at a school running Junior Librarian.net and Ranger. Identikit comes and goes without reason so borrow and return doesnt work. MLS tried remote access but couldnt solve the problem although said that they thought IE8 was a possible cause (apparently they have not tested it on IE8!). MLS help desk was closed/ unavailable wednesday & thursday last week and dispite several voicemails being left they have still yet to respond. School is chasing MLS for a refund but as they are not answering the phone.... they are left with a system that doesnt work. Back to version 3 for them I'm afraid, until MLS can get their act together.
