@MaxBerzon You can tell the share not to allow synchronisation - I'm assuming that's the desired affect anyway? * RDP into the server in question * Open computer management (start > run > compmgmt.msc) * Expand the Shared Folders node * Click Shares * Right click the share in question and click properties * On the General tab click the Offline settings button * To prevent files syncronising completely, select Files or programs from the share will not be available offline Then when users are offline they'll see nothing but when their connectivity works they should see what they expect... Hi all, I've just run some Microsoft Baseline Security Analyser (MBSA, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.1 Availability Download FAQ Resources ) scans of my servers and I've discovered a really worrying permissions issue. On all 3 of my domain controllers I'm alerted to more than 2 administrators being found: * BCGS\administrator (that's correct) * BCGS\PCAdmins * BCGS\staff The latter 2 are obviously very wrong and incredibly concerning! Both of those are assigned by GPO as restrictive groups but only to the OUs containing workstations, not containing domain controllers! Obviously I can't remove these administrators via computer management as local users and groups are disable on domain controllers. I've done a gpresult on one of my DCs (Windows Server 2003): Applied Group Policy Objects ----------------------------- Default Domain Controllers Policy M-WSUS_Servers Default Domain Policy The problem groups are not assigned by any of these policies and a quick scan of 2 of my member servers (out of 15) shows the problem groups have no admin rights on member servers. Any ideas please folks, tearing my hair out here! Jonathan

An update: I've managed to get the ISA server to connect to our Ranger Outpost server (testing that the ISA server rules permit the traffic to Ranger Outpost) - the required rules are: Permit TCP port 6543 TO the Ranger Outpost server from Anywhere Permit TCP port 6543 FROM the Ranger Outpost server from Anywhere (the only reason I've used "anywhere" here is because I'm still testing and will eventually be using Ranger externally). I had to create my own protocol for Ranger (TCP inbound 6543 and TCP outbound 6543) that my access rule uses. At the moment I'm trying to get our ISP (KCN / KPSN) to make the relevant changes to the school's Cisco firewall. Once it's all up and running correctly I'll post back again. Jonathan

I'm trying to do the same thing, Ranger listening on 6543 but I can't setup ISA because it wants to know what protocol. I've even tried creating it's own protocol specifying the port number - still no joy and ISA doesn't even suggest a connection has been attempted I'll post here if I find a solution...

Hi All, We're running Economatics Logicator 2004 v5 build 52 as obtained from: Economatics Education: Logicator Technical Support (we have a site license and put the upgrade in place when it was released). For the most part it works fine - connects to control boxes with no problem and a number of the Softsystems "environments" work without issue. However, the Head of IT has tried to use the Disco Soft System and is having issues. On the analogue panel input/output A0 supposedly links to the soundcard's main out (i.e. what you hear when you play a track). A0 alternates between 0 and 3 % but no sound is being relayed. It works on the HoD's Toshiba laptop with no problem but doesn't work for the students on the Acer Power F6s (Realtek sound card) - most frustrating. I've tried running it on the Acer Power F6s as an administrator, thinking something was possibly a problem with permissions but that didn't solve the problem. Anybody else come across the problem? Came across this thread while creating a new Logicator topic for another problem. Logicator 2004 v5 build 52 has been released for a long while now and should be installed (fixes numerous problems including some with control boxes IIRC). v5 build 52 can be obtained: Economatics Education: Logicator Technical Support Setting the program to run as another user strikes me as a bit extreme :S

In terms of staff leaving computers and the screensaver lock not being liked - if you've got control of group policy just enforce it under the cover of good practise and BECTA guidelines for protecting the data. I certainly plan to once the dust settles a bit here - we're rushed off our feet at the moment. jonathan

Hmm, seem to have cracked it - setting a drive as a "hot spare" has got me round the problem and the RAID is rebuilding. Don't think much to the server hardware though as it keeps rebooting. Looks like I may have been given the go ahead to redo the servers, much needed as my predecessors didn't exactly keep things in good nic.... Thanks for everyone's help!

Sorry, I was unclear. The 2 disks were lost on different servers. The server in question with the RAID 5 has only lost 1 disk. I have all the menu options to rebuild it just doesn't seem to actually get on with it Any other ideas folk?

Hi Guys, I'm not sure exactly what Adaptec RAID card is in this particular server but do know it's a SCSI UW320 RAID running Adaptec RAID Setup utility v1.12. Unfortunately, due to recent underinvestment in IT, much to my disgust, the AC failed in our server room the other day (only lost 2 harddisks, was dead chuffed). I'm trying to rebuild the RAID 5 using the Adaptec utility but it just won't rebuild. Menu option is there and everything so I'm stumped - the array just continues to say "Degraded" rather than "Rebuilding". Only 1 disk on the RAID 5 was lost. Any ideas? I've downloaded the manual ( http://www.itauteconline.com.br/iol_arquivos/corpo3_arquivos/drivers_arquivos/raid/adaptec/manual/stoman.pdf ) but am stumped. The replacement disk is definitlely big enough and I just formatted it with the RAID utility. I've got my SSL certificate installed and have setup the ISA server in unihomed mode (i.e. only 1 network card). According to my book, in unihomed mode all listeners should point to to the All Networks (and localhost) network so I have configured them thus. Using the Publish a website wizard I've specified a couple of websites to publish. Hi all, Some of you may remember I posted this thread about Office 2007 completing setup every time but that was any application in the suite. Now I find that Access 2007 still does it. Users go to open it and bam - up comes the setup configuration wizard to finish it off. Anyone know why this is only happening to Access? I'm really quite stumped and have even edited the profile after loading the program correctly. Hi, Thanks to Cools' post I've managed to get the WOL functionality working on our Acer Power F6s. I've placed instructions below but I also plan on writing a more graphical helpsheet for this which I'll host on my site when I get a chance. Instructions (Tested with Windows XP and the Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E gigabit adapter) * Open computer management (right click my computer and click manage or Start > Run > compmgmt.msc > OK * Open Device manager * Expand Network adapters * Right click the Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E gigabit ethernet controller and click Properties * Click the Advanced tab * Make the following changes in the list: - Wake up capabilities - set this to magic packet - Wake up from shutdown - set this to on * Click the Power Management tab * Untick all boxes on that tab so the network card is not turned off. * OK all dialog boxes to save. The network card will reset so there will be a brief interruption to network connectivity. On my setup I didn't need to enter the BIOS to adjust anything. Hi all, I've got problem with hardware compression on my backup Exec setup. I've checked this thread but although that seems similar it doesn't strike me as being quite the same. I know the files I'm backing up compress very well (tested this by compressing to .7z using 7-zip). However, when I tell my software to hardware compress, which my drive supports, I get 1.01:1 compression at best which is virtually useless given that my tests show it should work better. (admittedly hardware compression and 7zip will be using different algorithms). Any advice appreciated. Doesn't look like that WUS 3.0 though as I know for a fact it prepares graphs. WSUS 3 was a big improvement on earlier versions, even if I can't make my install work right now....

To add to the usefulness of WSUS, it will also tell you the computer make and model of a machine, the BIOS version information. Admittedly all that data is available via WMI but WSUS 3 makes all this available easily. On a related note, and apologies if this results in me hijacking your thread, my WSUS tells me that many workstations last submitted a status report "No yet reported". Clients that have submitted before haven't done for months. Anybody got any ideas why? We client side target them through AD Group-policy but they're in the groups correctly so I don't understand Thoughts welcome... Jonathan

Hi all, I've got a lot of Acer Power F6s here, kindly provided by my predecessor. It doesn't appear they have Wake on LAN (WOL) so I'm asking if anybody has the same units and has managed to get them to wake with the "magic packet". In the BIOS (AMI) I've gone to power management setup but the only option relating to this is resume on LAN - I've tried with this but the WOL packet just won't wake it up. Acer Tech support tell me these units do support it but I don't believe them. Anybody managed to make it work? Thanks in advance, Jonathan

Thanks Michael - that fixed it. I was looking for a problem with Application Data although as you say this was a profile issue. Original problem: Office 2007 was running the configuration and installation wizard (see attached pic) each time it was run by an unprivileged user (a student in this case). Hi all, We seem to have a problem with our office 2007 (12) setup. To give you some background: * OS: Windows XP Pro SP2 * Server OS: Windows Server 2003 * Office 2007 Enterprise, installed by customised unattended script run manually. * Student profiles by mandatory profile As a user of the machine, such that our students are, every time they run Office2007 they get the "completing installation" screen. If an administrator logs in this doesn't occur but as soon as a user logs back in the problem re-occurs. I've run full Windows / office updates on one workstation (hold SP3) and that doesn't seem to cure the problem. Has anybody else had this problem? It's understandably winding our staff and students up and wasting time. From what I read on the Internet this is a common problem - any suggestions welcome Jonathan Oh, and for those wanting to set 2007 to save as 2003 by default, this thread is quite useful.

That's true and something I was looking at but doing that on multiple workstations could be a pig - plus it depends if it's a software registry key or a user one. That said, you can define registry keys by group policy so I might have a look when I get back and report my findings.... Jonathan

Hi all, Apologies if this has been asked before or if this thread is in the wrong forum. I've also had a look at this movie maker thread but I don't think it's the same problem. I know that when using MMXP it saves to the temporary store which is on the local machine and not redirected - to my knowledge this is the case when even redirecting Application Data. Does anybody know a way of redirecting the MMXP temporary store through group policy? The attached image shows the setting I want to change, clearly pointing to the local profile.
