We managed to work very well together, even though we had Primarily Novell on one site and W2k3 on the other. Our interim solutions for our temporary site used many aspects of Novell whilst planning the full migration off to windows. We had to go through procurement for our two builds and the interim solution. If we had the luxury of time we would have liked to have done much of it ourself, but due to the amount of money we were not allowed to do that. Single AD is not a problem. we have 2 offices, and cover support calls for both sites from either office so long as no physical presence is needed. It works well. Lots of advantages but both teams do need to work well and the management may seek some "Slimming" as time goes on. Our 3 schools had 8 staff in total, we are down to 4 covering the 2 new schools. We have a independant server room at each site. 1Gb but it hardly gets stretched. Our backups run across the link so we have offsite backups that take place 3 times a day. Is there 2 I.T. Teams? We had to go from 3 to 1 , but the first two schools merged in 2k8 and the second merger was 2k11 . You need to work together, we started 12 months before the 1st deadline and before anything formal was set up. Rob

holey crap.. Our electronics club at uni got one of them free in 94 of a washing machine manufacturer. A washing machine would have been more useful. TT

Securing form the world with an ASA5520, not cheap but we could have done it for free using pfSense or one of the other free linux firewall distros ( enfian, ClearOS, Untangle, etc..) We use Forefront TMG to proxy, not sure where that product is going will have to refresh my memory as we need to look at our filtering solution for Sep 2014 onward. Rob

We have 2 schools 5 miles appart and a 1Gb link. Site A backs to Site B to disk and then on a friday to tape Site B backs to site A to disk and then on friday to tape So the tapes and HDD backup is alread 5 miles from the data, We only take the tapes out incase of a 2 site fire ( Highly unlikly! ). Yes that's preferable in your situation, However, what filtering are you going to put on and how are you going to prevent the service being abused and possibly used for Illegal activities that your institution may get questioned about. Make sure all bases are covered. Rob

First off check with SWGFL that you can offer out your connection, your T's and C's may not allow this. Then look at captive portals ( we are using pFsense on an old watchguard firewall ) to provide the user access. Then look at how you get that traffic to your router, which I am guessing is controlled by SWGFL, without it touching your network. Rob

never bothered to stat ours but I doubt we get more than a handful of genuine visitors a week and we are a 1100+ Secondary. get awstats uploaded TT

can do it from work, from the pub on a teatherd tablet and on my phone ( although it's very small!! ) Rob

yeah, i ues teamviewr runnign on a XP VM at my house, so I can connect to that and then to any of the other machines in the house ( Linux boxes, Laptops , etc ) Rob

Anyone else using websense webfilter? we had an issue with our VLE getting blocked by one of our custom filters. itslearning it was not in out list of sites, so after getting it looked at by support it turns out that in a custom list a * wildcard is added to the start and end of the entry. so we have ning.com ( which is a blog site ) But websense will see that as *ning.com* so it will match itslearNING.COM now imagine you have a custom allow for bbc.co.uk that's actualy *bbc.co.uk* so if someone registers getpastschoolblockbbc.co.uk and puts a proxy on it then it will allow them through! Seems a bit insecure to me! Rob

Put the new servers on a static network addredd on a different subnet. Put the clients on a static address on that subnet. ( point DNS at your new DC ) Should be fine as long as the NEW DC's don't have DHCP runnign. Rob

Do you knwo who the original vendor was, if so as them to put in a TAC request to get it swapped out. TT
