Remote access of user areas from home
everton4europe replied to everton4europe's topic in Wireless Networks
Are they able to read and write files from home? (I know this may sound a stupid question i am on new ground here!) -
What i am after is some from of Remote Storage device which will sit on the network and users will access from anywhere internally of the school network. But when they are at home they are able to remotely access the same box from home through the internet (possibly VPN). Has any one managed to do something similar at there schools? and if so how, what equipment did you use and who set it up? Thank you

Set Terminal Services to use a second network port
everton4europe replied to Mr_M_Cox's topic in How do you do....it?
Check with your LEA about access of SIMS off site. When i asked about this for my school i got told this was a defanate non starter as you can't access SIMS from home, only within the LEA network. -

New server - 2003 or upgrade to 2008 ??
everton4europe replied to pooley's topic in Windows Server 2008
I am in the position where i am installing a new server this week and had the choice of 2k3 or 2k8. I went for 2k3 as there were no drivers for the raid cards i use until december and there are no clear drivers for the printers we use. I would asume that windows would have the drivers built in until i can get a straight answer that other hard ware will work i am sticking with 2k3. -
I will second that. I installed one for a school i did a favor for. And the head requested this model. And was very surprised with how good the server was. When you first turn it on it sounds like it is going to take off. but after 20 seconds it is deadly silent.

turning internet off in the evenings
everton4europe replied to mikeymike's topic in Wireless Networks
Within active directory users and computers you are able to set the logon times of users. So at evenings and weekends they will not be able to access the system. -
Ive already spoken to smart on this and it worked out cheaper for a new board. as we had to pay the transport of the board, then the transport costs back. then the cost of the membrane going over the board.

Within the bios of HP laptops there is a option to disable SATA support. Once this is disabled it will recognize the hard drive to install xp. I have had this on some nx7300.

Have you tried using http://HTTPS://? When i log into exchange 2007 through a web browser i need to enter this. Under IIS i have nothing under websites refering to exchange. But under Web service extensions i have the following allowed ASP .net Microsoft Exchange Client Access Server Microsoft exchange server All set to allowed. I think i had to manually set these if i remember rightly. but i dont do these often so may be mistaken

Think long and hard before any purchase. I have 11 of these and all but 1 are now sat under the teachers desk never been used even after several training session. And the one in use is used about once a term if that. They are a nice idea but not a wise investment from my experience.

I have just been asked to install Kodak Easy share 6.0 on 10 pc's all windows xp pro. I installed it on the first and chose to check for updates from the internet during install. It downloaded the latest version of easy share. I restarted the pc and it would get as far as loading settings then restart, and get to the same point and restart. I ran chkdsk from the windows cd and when restarted it got to loading setting then restarted. booted into safe mode to do a system roll back and it has corrupted all restore points. Tried it on a second pc (identical to the first) but chose to install from cd. This time it did exactly the same. When i booted into safe mode it let me do a system restore. (i didnt do a chkdsk on the 2nd pc) has any one come accross this before?

Dont use Grisoft AVG network edition. We have almost come to an end of a two year contract and we are moving away. we are counting the days down until the expiry date. I moved my school to it and have had no end of trouble with it. I find it very resource hungery and have countless phone calls of the system is running slow and the av software is running a scan, which can take upwards of 2 hours at times. We are looking at moving to Trend Micro Systems Client/Server suite either the smb version or the enterprise version. This does not slow any of the workstations down and deals with most outbreaks before you have even realised you have had a problem. Also when you install the client side it is done through the servers login script and the uninstaller will remove any old anti virus software for you. So no need to go around individual machines to remove av.
-
Our licence is up in June for our anti vrus software. Which we are not renewing and moving back to a trend micro solution. I have used in the past Trend Client Server suite which was very good and involved very little configoration of the client pc's just as long as you install the server side correctly. But i have seen some of the trend Micro Interscan appliencies which sit inbetween your network and your firewall, which offer AV, Content filtering etc. Has anyone had any experiences of these devices? At the moment i am waiting on a price to come back from my suppliers, but from what i can see is that over a 3 year period they would be the same cost to licence as the client server suite software.

Exchange 2007 sp1 just killed my exchange
everton4europe replied to everton4europe's topic in Windows
Thank you for that. Just tried that and just get the build to build upgrade is avaliable. I am going to start the server again from scratch. I have a back up of the exchange database. Think this will be the quicker option -
After waiting a few months to find any issues before install sp1. I finally to the leap today and installed sp1. got half way through the install (just after the stage where it uninstalls most of the existing Exchange 2007 software) and it decides that the update software is corrupt (this is after it has done 2 verifications that the download is ok). And cancels the update. but the problem is that is has disabled all the services and uninstalled most of exchange. I have spent 5 hours trying to get the server back going. As at one point it was recognizing it as a beta and would not let me run the setup wizard again. I managed to get a system repair going from the command line using setup.com /recoverserver. But at the moments i am getting a error when installing ms parser 6.0 it gives me a n error exception. Any suggestions!
